Running 24:00 [3] 2.5 mi (9:36 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 17

2 min run/1 min walk with Presto! My hip's been feeling pretty good, so I decided to see how 2 minute running intervals would feel. Not perfect, but pretty good! I'll stick with this for another week or so and see how things go. Presto was feeling a bit slow this morning. I'm not sure if that was because he hadn't had breakfast yet or because he was wearing a jacket for the first time this fall or for some completely unrelated reason.

Strength 5:00 [3]

I think it's time to start adding abs back in. I've been avoiding them because they were aggravating my hip, but I feel like having strong abs can only help my hip in the long run. I left out the tuck-ups because I think those are particularly problematic and replaced them with planks.

Note

I've been curious to know how much more I walk around at lab when I'm doing experiments vs. when I'm working at the computer. My dad had a Samsung FitGear 2 (that I think came free with his phone or something?) that he isn't using anymore so he sent me the watch. It took a bit of work to get it charged and alive, but I've got it working (more or less)!

The data is a bit wonky at the moment because I'm sort of stubbornly not connecting it to my phone. It seems to be on a timezone somewhere in Europe for reasons that are unclear, and there's no way to change the time without connecting to a phone. Perhaps I will give up and connect it to a phone at some point...

Regardless, here's the data from yesterday/this morning, which was a computer day with a run:

10,130 steps (no idea if this is reasonable or not)

124 floors (this seems HIGHLY suspect on the high end, since I seem to gain floors while just walking around the lab on a single floor and even with life in the Berkeley hills, it's hard to come up with 1240ft of climb...)

7.63km (this seems low to me, at least assuming google maps is correct, which I'm going to go ahead and assume it is; the distance for my run was about 700m short and the distance for my commute to and from work was about 500m short in each direction)

So...yeah...it's not clear how useful this will be, since the climb seems artificially high and the distance seems artificially low... Perhaps the steps are correct???

Running 17:35 [3] 2.0 mi (8:47 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 17

Alternating 1 min run/1 min walk with Presto! The hip felt better tonight than Tuesday. Yay! It's nice to have some improvement. It looks like I'm also getting a bit faster around the loop, which almost certainly means the running part of the loop is getting faster. I'm going to go ahead and attribute this to things feeling better :-).

Running 19:00 [3] 2.0 mi (9:30 / mi)

1 min run/1 min walk with Presto! We've pretty much given up on getting any trick-or-treaters at our place, so I just headed out for a run after getting home. I find it odd how few trick-or-treaters there are in Berkeley in general, actually... Apparently, there are only a few blocks where all the kids go, but it seems strange not to have the neighborhood overrun with kids. I only saw like 4 groups out along my running route between 7 and 7:40, which seems like prime trick-or-treat time.

Anyway, I did get to see some fun Halloween decorations, so it was all good! My hip was about the same as Saturday, so I think it is actually improving (since today I did spend the entire day working at the computer). Presto was SUPER EXCITED to get out tonight, which was fun.

Biking 1:30:00 [3] 16.5 mi (5:27 / mi)

My now-normal bike loop through the Berkeley hills! Chilly enough for long-sleeves and a jacket on the bottom half of the hill (below the fog) and warm enough for sweating without the jacket at the top of the hill (above the fog). Berkeley makes it even harder to dress for biking than I normally find it. Really nice to get out for a hard workout.

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching while eating an avocado. Mmmm...avocado...
