Orienteering 1:01:34 [3] *** 3.4 km (18:06 / km) +150m 14:50 / km
8c shoes: O-Rocs

Pre"running" Brown at Joe Grant with Presto! Bleh. I was hoping to be able to run this, but alas I was not. I mean, I guess I could have run it if I was unconcerned about pain or additional damage, but my knee started hurting basically as soon as I started running, so I decided descretion was the better part of valor and just walked the course, and even walking down the steep downhills was still slightly painful. I will hold off on running a bit longer and then maybe go for a flatter, smoother first run.

Anyway, other than that things were reasonably clean. I had a couple of moments where I was like, why is the control not here?!?!? It should be here!! But it turns out that it was there - just behind the feature. And one silly moment of almost going down the wrong spur. Other than that, I made a couple of route choices to increase distance but decrease poison oak since I decided that getting poison oak on a course that I couldn't even run would just add insult to injury. Presto was happy to be outside in a park, although I'm sure he would have liked to go faster, and it was nice to experience what may be the last of the rain for the next 6-9 months!

Strength 10:00 [3]

Slacklining! A contractor accidentally cut a power line to the vast majority of Berkeley campus, so we had an unexpected several hour holiday in the middle of the day since a) everything we do requires power and b) it is at least theoretically unsafe to be in the building without the normal air exchange and hood flow and stuff. One of my labmates brought a slackline with him to work (for reasons which are unclear...), and it was a pretty fun way to spend a couple of hours on a Friday afternoon :-).

Roller Blading 49:35 [3] 5.2 mi (9:32 / mi)

Roller blading with Sam and Presto on the Bay Trail! There was a really nice sunset over Mt. Tam tonight, and it was great to be outside exercising. Presto was all prancy and happy to be out for a run :-).

Stretching 6:00 [3]

Normal stretching and evening nerve glides.

Elliptical 33:00 [3]

I was going to go swimming but swimming outside in 50 degree fog/mist seemed unnecessarily cold, so I decided to elliptical instead. It turns out that UC Berkeley has weird, fancy ellipticals that mimic the running gait better but the running muscles less well. It was sort of like running through molasses. The hard part was bringing my foot forward more than pushing back. Still a good workout, though. The knee felt good until the very end.

Biking 5:00 [3]

Briefly checked out a stationary bike to see if it would be any better, but either the resistance part of the bike I was using was broken or it would only increase the resistance if it could sense your heartrate (which for reasons I assume are associated with dry skin, never works for me), so I gave up pretty quickly. Biking up the hill after work every day is WAYYYYY more difficult than the stationary bike.

Then I discovered that the downstairs ellipticals are more like the ellipticals Harvard had. I will keep this in mind if I come back.

Biking 45:00 [3] 7.4 mi (6:05 / mi)
shoes: Specialized Hardrock

Mountain biking with Sam and Presto at Wildcat Canyon Park! We did the long flattish section all the way out and back. My hip and the outside of my left leg were feeling tired/soreish by the end on the uphills but in more of a weak/need-to-get-stronger way than an injured way. My knee felt great. I decided to stop while I was ahead and didn't go up the big hill with Sam, which felt smart if slightly sad. Presto was a happy dog sprinting along beside us :-).

After the biking, we went on a short hike up the hill, which felt fine for all my body parts. Hopefully I'm really on the mend this time!

Stretching 11:00 [3]

Long stretch plus evening nerve glides.
