Running 10:00 [3] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Trail

Dropping Presto off at the finish and then scurrying over to the start to take Ali's assigned start time!

Red day 2 at Calero! SO MUCH BETTER!!! This is more what orienteering should feel like :-). I still made several idiotic mistakes, but I actually felt like I could run. Also, the vultures that I saw were mainly munching on a deer carcass rather than planning on munching on me, which is definitely a confidence booster!

My first major time loss was on 5 where I found an (I guess, incorrect and old) Red Day 2 streamer on a nearby rock pile and then spent forever poking around looking for the control before taking a mental step back and realizing I was not looking in the correct rock pile. The second was on 14, where I decided to check out every ridge in the vicinity before finding the one with my control. Other than that, things were mostly small misses in the circle. Even with the mistakes and the foxtails, I was having fun out there, so it was all good!

Red at Calero! Ugh. This was quite horrible. I never really felt good out there and the course was quite physically challenging, which made things worse. I made a bunch of little mistakes out there and a couple of big ones. Part of this was just that I couldn't seem to make sense of the 7.6m contours and part of it was just that I was tired, I think. At one point a did a 180 and just could not seem to wrap my mind around the fact that I needed to turn around even though everything was telling me I was not where I thought I was. The hill was too steep (oh, it's probably just the ginormous contours), the hill was too open (oh, the trees are far apart here...), the hill was too rocky (hmm...there shouldn't really be any rocks at all). I finally turned around after climbing like 8 or 9 contours up a hill on the wrong side of the valley. Sigh.

The rest of the course can be summed up by the flock of circling vultures that followed me for the last 40 minutes or so. Vultures look weird when they are peering down at you. Also, when they are expecting a meal at any moment, they do not circle at a particularly high altitude, and they are extremely large and intimidating.

The day was salvaged by a fun afternoon and evening and an extremely early bedtime.

Running 51:50 [3] 5.5 mi (9:25 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 11

Easy-peasy run with Christy and Presto in the *rain*!!! Well, rain is a bit of a strong word for it, but it did actually rain for much of the night and there was a small amount of liquid coming out of the sky briefly while we were running. Presto was like "Whoa! This is unacceptable. We moved here so that I would not have to do things like run when it is not perfectly dry and 65 degrees." He got over it, though and ended up having a great time :-).

Note

I just signed up for the Napa Valley Marathon with Jason! The course map looks like a pretty ideal marathon for me, so it should be fun (I hope) :-)!

In other news, my throat is almost back to normal today. I forgive the FDA its foibles. Knowing what you are eating before you eat it is definitely a plus.

Flute 1:30 [3]

Whoops! I haven't logged flute in a while. KSO rehearsal was actually quite good tonight, but I was falling asleep. I have absolutely not finished the whole timezone switch thing.

Orienteering 20:05 [3] *** 2.0 mi (10:02 / mi)
5c shoes: Brooks Running 11

BAOC training with Presto and Sam! The training was actually pretty good with a nice turnout, but it was a bit of a disaster for me.

I brought back some Turkish Delight for the lab and brought it in to have at lab meeting today. I took a piece out of the "fruit" flavored box. I noticed while I was eating it that it tasted suspiciously of flowers, but I didn't really think much of it (aside from eh...not so great...) until my throat started burning and itching and my face started swelling. ACK!!! I decided to wait 5 minutes to see if things went away but they were getting worse, so I ended up leaving lab meeting to get some benedryl. Over the course of the rest of lab meeting the swelling in my face went down and the itching/burning in my throat decreased a bit but now I also felt totally woozy from the benedryl. Presto needed a run, and I needed to get the maps to BAOC training anyway, so I decided to give running a try. I made it about 2 miles but the harder breathing made my throat feel worse and I was all dizzy from the benedryl, so I handed Presto off to Sam and walked back to the meeting area.

Turns out the Turkish Delight was flavored with "Rose Flavoring", which I expect actually means "perfume". I had one that was in theory supposed to be ginger flavored. I'm glad I didn't try eating the one that was actually rose flavored. One of my labmates described it as biting into a hotel bathroom!
