Running 32:33 [3] 3.6 mi (9:02 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 2

Running with Presto from my apartment to the river and then did the JFK-River St. loop crossing every bridge. I was tired from a long (and pointless - my cells did something truly strange and I had to cancel the experiment HOURS into it) day in lab, but it was nice to get out for a run. I believe Presto found the home of the rabbits.

Orienteering 29:54 [3] *** 3.5 km (8:33 / km)
spiked:12/13c

CSU training at Peter's Hill with Ross, Ian, Brendan, Sanna, Pia, Mark, Audun, and Presto. Ross designed a hill-intensive course on Peter's Hill. There were 4 ascents of the hill and the point was to try to run hard going both up and down the hill. I was having a bit of trouble with the chin-high grass, but Presto thought it was the best thing ever and kept trying to pull me along faster. The first couple of ascents were fine because I could find reasonably grass-free areas, but the last 2 were in grass-filled sections and I had a lot of trouble getting through them. I also managed to twist my ankle on the paved road at number 8 when I stepped on a rock...figures...so I took it easy for the rest of the course. It is a little sore now but not too bad. It was cool and foggy and the view of the fog from the top of the hill was awesome!

Canoe (also some running) 2:24:00 [3]

NEOC Canoe-O at Tully Lake. Sanna and I decided to go together in Aims's canoe. We originally were going to go to number 1, then I was going to get out and run to numbers 1-4 while Sanna canoed directly to number 4. We decided not to do this because we weren't sure how well Sanna would be able to control such a big canoe by herself. It turns out Sanna can do this just fine, so in retrospect (and for next year) this would have been the best plan. We ended up rowing to 1 and 2. Then I got out and ran to 3 (which I had trouble finding from the land) and met Sanna on the close side of a peninsula. We then rowed out to 5 and were planning on rowing back to 4, but we miscalculated and ended up at 6, so I ran to and from 4 while Sanna waited. We don't think we actually lost much, if any, time here. We then went to 7, 8, 9, 10, and 11. On the way to 7, Sanna realized that I was holding the paddle backwards. I had MUCH more power holding the paddle in the correct direction and we sped up considerably...oops... Unfortunately, we screwed up 11 and got stuck in some marshy stuff. Sanna decided to see if she could run to the control from where we were, but it was impossible, so we rowed out and found the correct way in. It was good that both Sanna and I were so small because while we were not exactly gliding through the water, we were able to force our way through. We probably lost about 10 minutes here. We then went to 12, 16, 15, and 14. We were originally planning to have one of us get out between 14 and 15 to run to 13 and then pick 17 up on the way in to the finish, but unfortunately our mistake at 11 didn't give us enough time to do this. We may have had time to go to 17, but we decided it was safer just not to overtime. Luckily our copious X chromosomes still allowed us to get t-shirts! We had an awesome time! We are reasonably well matched in size and power, the lake was gorgeous, and the weather was perfect!
