Lovely day, planned to go for a trot with the Esk Valley lot. Got to the car-park 15mins early to be greeted by several empty fell runners' cars. Waited a bit and looked in the pub but no-one to be seen so they must have gone out a bit earlier to make the most of the light. When I got back cars still empty and no-one in the pub.

So went around Roseberry, Hanging Stone and Captain Cooks on me todd. Cracking evening and sunset, a little chilly and dark in the woods at the end. Moors paths in good nick, any time I ventured under tree cover though it was a bit gloopy.

Note

The main feelings after the weekend are:
1. some_text
2. Who took a cheese-grater to my nipples!

My navigation seems to have regressed a bit. I've been finding it very difficult to concentrate when on a course this year. Out of 14 events so far this year (so it can't be due to lack of time with a map!) I've only felt I'm actually orienteering on 3 of them. I think I need to set myself a specific technique to focus on at each event. However, poor runs this year are on a par with good runs last year.

Running - Road warm up/down 10:08 [2] 2.02 km (5:01 / km) +38m 4:35 / km

Orienteering race (JK Relay, Hambledon) 37:20 [5] **** 7.01 km (5:20 / km) +239m 4:33 / km
spiked:14/22c shoes: X-talon 212 (2)

1-BB. 7/29 Winner: GG 29:16 (128%- by my watch, splits say 30secs less)
With Duncan injured we had 1st year M16 Aiden Rigby on leg 2, and he did a good job amongst the big boys, setting me off in 15th. I gained one position (OUOC) and lost one (Speaky for EBOR).
Set off with Coombs. Mistake at 1 (40secs), wobble to 2, bit low at 4 and that was the last I saw of him. Bit low on 8, then got direction all wrong and lost close to 1min on 9. Then got direction out of that all wrong, taking a big banana to spectator. Suffered on hill out of 11. Rest was pretty clean but no zip. Speaky came past early on the way to 14, but was in sight until 17.

Should have paid more attention to who I went out after, as Mike and Ian were both within catching distance if a bit more motivated. Would have made it more interesting anyway!

42/57(finishers) Winner: Matt Speake 94:44 (141%)
Slipped into cruise-control for this. Unfortunately the satnav went on the blink at some pretty important times. Poor direction out of controls cost me early on (3mins at 4), but in general I was going OK, just without drive.
Poor direction out of 12 (20sec) and 13(1min), then compoounded this by losing it after the field on #14 - wrong path, didn't find the opath near the control then no plan to rectify. Relocated way down at the stream (6min). Saw BommyT through the bushes as I punched, he didn't catch me until 20 though. Then I got more into it (although still a bit ploddy), generally pretty clean in the circle. Wine-gums kicked in at 32 and I eased away from Tom, but still missed 30secs on each of 36 and 37.
However, I managed to punch all the correct controls in the correct order.

Should have put in more effort at the start as may have got into the groove. A long way down on people I should be near. However, I set off at a steady pace, still felt strong at the end and, %wise was much better off easing a poor(ish) run, than last year's JK classic

62/94 Winner: Ralph Street (133%)
Somehow spiked 1 despite realising half-way I had no plan or bearing. I then spannered 1min on #2. Then got direction all wrong crossing the valley to #10, ending up on the southern enclosure (1min). Then suffered up the sharp hills. Got the right route to #17 but the execution was pretty hilarious. Then too low on 19. Should have been comfortably under 40.
Eddie, Josh and Jamie P, amongst others, showing me how it should be done

Never on top with the nav (a theme all weekend). Was in the top-30 overall until 10/11, but then my lack of speed-endurance showed and I dropped to 47th-ish.
Got lucky seeing someone get caught out at 6 so I didn't. Fluffed 13 despite getting a good look at it from spectator. Very hesitant to 17. Can do much better, as shown by a distinctly average bof score.

Note

JK Targets? Well, I mainly do O for the craic. Clean(ish) runs I'm pleased with would be nice. A top 30 on all days and overall would be very pleasing - not expecting much from the sprint though, with the large field and aiming for longer races. A solid relay run.
