Rogaining race 16:00:00 [5] 60.0 km (16:00 / km)

My teammate and I ended up pretty mismatched in our abilities - day 1 on skis, I had a hard time keeping up, and day 2 on snowshoes was the reverse. I had never skied on such old, firm snow before, and it clearly separated the intermediates from the experts among us.

So I will file this under "learning" category rather than the "competing" category. What did I learn?

- My homebuilt map holder worked fine in previous tests, but those were non-crash situations. Landing it on a few times revealed some additional design flaws.

- This was my 4th snowgaine, but the first one cold enough to freeze the hose on my Camelbak. On day 1, this was solved by putting the hose against my body, but on day 2, this didn't work as the freeze point was behind my shoulder. I need a better solution for the future.

- Carrying the score card via string is not adequate. It came loose at the north end of the largest lake on the map. I discovered it pretty quickly, but we ended up skiing all the way back to the south end of the lake without seeing it - because we took a slight shortcut back to the lake and thus did not fully retrace our steps. A good 30-40 minutes lost there.

I'll be back here in 3 months for the regaine!
