Orienteering 5:30:00 [4] 14.8 mi (22:18 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Exodus trail shoes

3.5 more climbs up the mountain today. I thought today might be a little easier, but I was wrong. Did more running today than on the other days. And, visiting some controls for the 3rd and 4th time, I was spiking them all.

Over 40 miles for the weekend, 8 trips up the mountain (many carrying stuff), way over 1000 meters of climb. I am pretty sore. Beginning to wonder if I should have stuck with something like chess as a hobby.

Orienteering 5:00:00 [4] 13.8 mi (21:44 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Exodus trail shoes

Woke up the controls on the most interior part of the map, then hauled some water up to the Day 2 start, then hauled some water down from the Day 1 start, then took down a bunch yellow, orange and brown controls near the lake, then went halfway back up the mountain for a search and rescue mission that fortunately was resolved quickly.

Great camaraderie among the course setting/vetting/cleanup team.

Orienteering 3:30:00 [2] 8.0 mi (26:15 / mi)
shoes: Saucony Exodus trail shoes

Field-checked 10 of the toughest, least-accessible controls for the Moreau A-meet in a steady rain. I was consistently getting to within 10-20 meters of the correct location, but then taking a very long time to find the black control stand and thin strand of white tape hanging above it (a few also had blue and orange, but most did not). Made me feel like I was almost a beginner again.

There were two places where my compass didn't work at all. Either it was excessive moisture, or some of these boulders contain iron. I'll find out tomorrow when it's not raining.

Orienteering race 48:00 [4] *** 5.4 mi (8:53 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Cascadia

Barely reached Saratoga Springs in time to compete in both sprints. This wasn't part of the plan, and I wasn't in racing mode. Brenan and I were the last starters - the start control had already been packed away. I went off in the wrong direction at first, probably costing 3 minutes, did respectable after that but still came in toward the back of the pack.

For the second run I had very little left - I was given an mp for a control that I definitely visited, but I didn't really care.

A lot of shivering both before and after these sprints.

Note

Saratoga trivia-o. A very quiet event with 9 participants arriving and starting at all different times. No one was actually there before 4:00. I approached a few people who seemed like they might be looking for an orienteering event, which led to one good conversation but two other people nervously walking away without responding. All were men. I don't look like a panhandler; I thought maybe I inadvertently chose the gay pickup spot as the starting line, but then they would be approaching me.

No one got the flow rate of Deer Park spring and only Sue Hawkes-Teeter got the perimeter of the small pond correct. I guess no one pace counts!

Running 37:00 [4] 5.2 mi (7:07 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Sequence II

From work to AA. Did the mile from Wash. Park to Grove Ave in 5:59. Felt great.

Exercises 10:00 [3]

Pushups (90) and wobble board
4 PM

Note

Left work early to attend my son's cross country meet at Fonda-Fultonville High School. With all the trips I'll be taking this week, this was a hard one to justify, but I got to see him finish second in the modified race. (Caveat: there were very few runners).

I'm getting worried about Friday's weather forecast: heavy rain and 45 degree temps.
