Was looking forward to running on a map that I should recognise 100% of, but the ibuprofen didn't seem to help numb my R Achilles today, even the long walk/jog to the start didn't warm it up. So my entire run was restricted and in some pain so couldn't push at all. Didn't stop me having a few little issues though at #3, #7 in the bush block, and poor route through the rocks to #10.
Somehow managed a 7th.
Relieved most people enjoyed the area with it's difficult to map/represent using ISOM standards due to the nature of Kaast terrain. Pity is wasn't a long event so more rock could have been experienced.

Orienteering Race 1:31:44 [3]

Oceania Long @ Rototoa
M50 *not fit at all see below!
Started steady and relatively cautiously which paid dividends as was in 2nd place at #4. #5 was a longer uphill leg which I began ok but approaching the detailed control circle I noticed I had caught the frenchman and proceeded to be put off my inclined direction to move his direction. We then both, and many more people, grid searched the area to no avail. I ended up backtracking a lot and starting again losing a big chunk of time.
That seemed to be end of my fully concentrated effort as many errors followed. Sooo out of practice! #9 was a real shocker also as I managed to get sucked right of our control into an amazingly similar parallel universe. I could have sworn the control was in the wrong place until I finally sorted my crap out, losing some major time there. Soon after that I hit the physical wall from my lack of training and so all the detailed uphill legs through the native were both a hard slog with a serious lack of interest.
Don't know how but still managed to beat 2/3 of the field... poor buggers mustn't have had a good day.
Enjoyed the tough map nevertheless.

Note

Righto... It's been forever since I've been on here, basically cos there's been little relevant material to log. The later part of last year I REALLY thought I'd seen the back of my achilles problems after major amounts of time off and doing rehab. I was quietly stoked to run pain free for a couple of months and was very careful not get carried away and so stayed with base typed training and no tempo stuff. But sadly out of the blue my silly right achilles injury returned once more. It's been about 5 months of seeing a physio and sports doc since then and they can't fix me up. General consensus is that its the nerves around the achilles and the whole right side up into my damaged discs. It really is driving me around the bend. Along with a lot of various stretching, it is recommended I try running with various painkillers which may help halt the pain signals that may not necessarily be major damage (couldn't see on ultrasound), so I guess I'll give that a go.

Fitness wise I have only been doing a few road rides, a little bit of gym work (not like I normally would) and tried to keep up 2 hard spin classes per week.

Have spent most weekends this summer mapping Riverhead north, so lots of slow walking around and around and up and down.

Entered Oceania but unsure how many runs I may get in.
Couldn't enter Masters as am one of the mapping team working on all the forest maps spread over the past two years... you're in for A TREAT imo. Hopefully course setters have done well.

Note

Had entered Oceania sprint but knew if I ran on the hard surface it would most likely stop me running anything after, even a jog may have been bad so wasn't worth the gamble.
