Orienteering Race race 1:07:01 [4] 6.2 km (10:49 / km) +400m 8:10 / km
shoes: Inov8 340

NZ Long Champs.
3rd; not far behind ACW and Greg Barbour (although I had to run unofficially)
Was excited to get to run on Waioneke after spending a lot of time mapping it last winter, but also knew it would be pretty physical especially not being running fit.
1: Course started tough physically and technically. Awesome! I was quite cautious and slow, 4th fastest split time.
2: Got to the circle with a very nice route along the ridge feeling happy with my choice but then dithered around starting to look for the flag a bit early. 7th fastest.
3: Almost perfect but fumbled a bit right at the circle looking at how things fitted on the map, instead of being confident of my direction and plan. (I'm certain it was a symptom of mapping it). 2nd fastest.
4: Across the tricky sand clearing, perfect direction for a nice spike. 1st split and putting me into 1st place overall.
5: short little leg, took it slow in order not to muff it, which I didn't. 3rd fastest
6: Another tricky one back across sand into little reentrant - looked dangerous so went safer but longer side to the north of the bigger hill, then carefully into the control for a slower spike. 1st fastest.
7: Depression setting up for long leg, No problem but didn't seem to have any urgency so ended up dropping to 4th fastest split.
8: Long leg... so indecisive at the beginning, changing my mind after starting. Was going to go slightly north of the staight line but then changed my mind to keep it safer by dropping to the track two below the big clearing near the beginning. It was ok but nothing fantastic, and I was a little unsure a couple of times around the uncrossible fence area mid way. Don't know if anyone chose the northern route but I think it does look better.. 2nd fastest anyhow.
9: Short leg over ridge into reentrant, stayed up too long and missed it, lost 45 seconds and that was enough to drop me into 2nd overall.
10: Across the slope through the green nightshade, wasn't sure what tot do initially, but then just went straight. Good, 3rd fastest due to some hessitation at the beginning.
11: Tough love, only way back was always going to involve a big climb.. Straight as I could while avioding green. Green while going up hill is never good. 2nd fastest.
12: A good confusing leg across a number of ridges. I chose to go right and stay in the csand clearing, however this was very tiring and a struggle to run. After the hill climb made it even worse and I could feel myself loosing motivation. A bit of trouble right inside the circle as the brain wasn't working in fast mode.Anyway my route choice must have been good cos I got fastest split and now only 7 seconds off ACW who was leading now.
13: should have been easy short but I fluffed about looking early and wondering where I was. 6th.
14: Through spectator. Nice. 1st fastest split, and now in lead by 10 seconds.
15: felt really tired and slow, 4th fastest.
16: Tight reentrant in complex area, thought I went into the circle well and found what I thought was the right reentrant, then got dizzy and panicky going around in circles checking all the close reentrants. Was starting to believe the control was in the wrong place or completely missing. Found the sucker eventually so not sure what happened to my brain. Lost 1 1/2 mins with 13th split.
17: Should have been a formality but I got all confused where I was as I couldn'd find the opening/crossing point in the deer fence, somehow loosing another minute in 9th fastest for the leg :(
18/19: with two last controls being short and technical I was determined to take more care but had to keep some speed going. Executed the perfectly for two fastest splits.
Overall better than I thought I'd go fitness wise, though I did struggle like most.
Very surprised that I was so close to ACW although he did a number of errors I think. Was also pleased to be up there with Greg Boubour. Maybe he's not fit?

Loved running on the map, just a little bit of a shame that the course never quite got into some really nice stuff near the bottom of the map, the course could have been a little bit longer for a WT of 70 mins.
Awesome race and course.
