Stationary biking 1:00:00 [1] 29.8 km (2:01 / km)

Leisurely session at setting four. It snowed today, though the temperature is slightly too high for anything more than a purely aesthetic accumulation.

Stationary biking 7:02:00 [1] 201.13 km (2:06 / km)

I have enjoyed using StationaryBike™ during this isolated fall and winter, but my previous outings have been low to moderate intensity sessions of about an hour. I'm hoping to do more ultras in the summer of 8+ hours, so I decided to try that on the stationary bike to end 2020. I didn't have a clear plan for exactly how long to ride; I had contemplated 12 hours, but this seemed ambitious. I settled on riding 200 km or 125 mi.

My kit was designed to simulate a long ride - I wore my backpack with 3L bladder of weak gatorade, I had three slices of pizza in a bag, and some trail mix. For entertainment, I had books 4-5 of WoT and my phone. I read about 200 pages of wheel of time, did assorted internet tasks, and called my mom.

I was reasonably comfortable through the ride - conditions were 2 C with sporadic snowfall; I started out in tights, SL shirt, and a hat, but took of the hat and long sleeve within the first hour. I took a quick bathroom break every 2 hours; total elapsed time was about 7:30. My right knee started to ache a bit after five hours, but I held up ok. I rode at setting 4 and maintained 18 mph (28.8 kph) steadily for the first four hours before slowing a little.

I felt adequately strong during the ride, but fifteen minutes after stopping, I crashed a bit. Even as I was showering in warm water, I had abrupt vasoconstriction, perhaps from my blood pressure crashing, and grew very cold. It's a stark reminder of how perilous the ends of long rides can be. My previous 8+ hour rides started very early and ended in the early afternoon, with temperatures in excess of 25 C. If I were isolated and caught in an abrupt cold rain while depleted from a long ride, exposure could be a significant risk.
