Stationary biking 30:00 intensity: (20:00 @1) + (10:00 @4) 15.12 km (1:59 / km)

A brief Christmas Eve session. I warmed up for ten minutes at setting 4 (easy), then did 2x5 minute intervals at setting 7 with five minutes rest at setting 4. My heart rate - both according to the bike and my manual timing - got up to about 175 during the bouts, and down to ~130 during the recovery. Overall quite pleasant, though certainly I was uncomfortable during the bouts.

There was a light wintry mix falling while I was out on my balcony, which is protected by an overhang from the roof. Conditions were pleasant, with a temperature of 2 C. Apparently there will be 10-15 cm of snow tonight, which is pleasant. The winter has been underwhelming thus far - too inclement for road biking, but without enough snow to do specifically winter activities.

Stationary biking 48:00 [2] 22.9 km (2:06 / km)

A bit of stationary biking at setting 6. I tried to bike indoors with the windows open, but I overheated. Once I went out on the balcony, it was much more pleasant - though I still was sweating profusely despite wearing shorts and a t-shirt in 2 C conditions. Obviously this is not representative of what actual biking is like in similar conditions. I continued WoT book 4.

OUSA Board of Directors Meeting

  1. Faye Doria from Up North Orienteering Club was appointed to the open Board seat that is up for reelection in 2021. She has considerable financial experience, which is fantastic.
  2. The Board awarded the 2021 OUSA Trail-O Championships to CRNA for May 15-16 in Philadelphia contingent upon approval 60-days out for COVID fairness/feasibility.
  3. The Board voted to adjust the rankings because national ranking events expire after one year. The synopsis is that events from 2019 will persist 2 years instead of 1, so we are effectively skipping March 2020 - March 2021.
  4. We passed our 2021 budget. Because of substantial uncertainty about 2021 income from club recharter fees, we will consider additional project spending in February 2021. Our budget has somewhat reduced programming money, chiefly in board-designated money to the teams, which was allocated in 2020 but not really spent. Nevertheless, the passed budget has a $69k budget deficit based on pessimistic income projections. Accounting for the ~$36k surplus from 2020, this will result in an unrestricted deficit of $33k for 2020-2021. At the start of 2020, OUSA had roughly $160k in an unrestricted reserve, so we are prepared to weather even these pessimistic projections. I am hopeful that once the rechartering occurs, our financial situation will be better, which should allow for some additional programming spending. We will review proposals in January, and decide how much OUSA can afford in February.
  5. Insurance has become more complicated about MTBO. Our current premium for 2021 is basically the same as in past years, at $26.4k. Of note, we received a ~20% rebate for 2020's insurance, getting about $5k back. However, insurance companies are apparently reluctant to cover mountain biking events. At present, instead of a carte blanche on MTBO events, our policy covers exactly four events. Additional events cost about $300 each, assuming they have fewer than 60 participants. OUSA has averaged about 10 MTBO events per year over the past decade, but I suspect there are a number of mixed events that include mountain bikes but are recorded as foot orienteering events in recharters. That distinction is suddenly important. The Board will figure out how to allocate those events, whether to expand our coverage, or whether to charge MTBO events differently.
  6. Some discussion ensued about how to best support new clubs. OUSA has about 62 clubs, and the number of new clubs is less than 1 per year over the past decade. Still, I think the onus is on OUSA to help new clubs start - with best practices, financial support, and helping forge relationships. Joseph Huberman (VP Clubs) is leading a task force to assess what we should do differently; Mike Minium, Faye Doria, and Ellen Stefaniak are also joining. Mike in particular has a lot of experience fostering new clubs through OCIN.
  7. Next board meeting is scheduled for Feb 8, though we will continue to have weekly calls to talk about stuff. I have financial tasks to attend to as the year draws to a close, including implementing better reporting and more transparency.
