Blue course at Mt. Tom set by Phil Bricker. The course and orienteering were delightful; Mt. Tom is an amazing place to run. My race was characterized by inadequate physical conditioning and a couple of poor route choice decisions. In general, my execution was clean.

I made a big error to 3 when I elected to go straight rather than running left along a road; I climbed an extra index contour for a loss of 60-90s. I made a 60s error at 4 near the circle when I ran to the wrong part of the spur. I made another 60s error at 5 missing left, but I figured things out when I hit the shelf. I got more into the zone after 6, though I had small bobbles in the circle at 8 and 9. My route choice to 17 was questionable; I bombed down to the stream, ran along it, then climbed ten contours at the end of the leg. Phil thinks sidehilling - a route I hadn't considered - would have been faster. I wasn't in good enough shape to race 7.3 km with 400m climb without faltering.

Mt. Tom will probably not be on the calendar for 2016 as we embargo it for an April 2017 A-meet.

Picking up seven controls and two water stops. I was pursued by several squadrons of mosquitoes.

Map hiking in F. Gilbert Hills State Forest on the new High Rock map, checking out details. I'd hoped to check out the map with a few NEOC people, but apparently this weekend was a bad date, so I ran alone. Either that or my ten-minute late arrival (fail) led us to miss each other.

The map is very good; one of the few questions I have is whether to have 2.5m or 5m contours. It's currently mapped at 2.5m. Also, it turns out that it's not ideal to run on a 1:15 map with mediocre printing when evaluating a map. I ran with an old copy of the map, and in many places, the differences are as night and day.

Allergies are destroying me. I also took a Benadryl last night to try to alleviate the symptoms; it's unclear which was more soporific.

Note
(rest day)

Completely exhausted after the Tiomila party adventure. The squats Monday morning also left my quads/hamstrings/something in my leg fatigued and shredded.

I joined Boris for some gym action this morning. I began by warming up for twenty (insufferable) minutes on a treadmill, then did a little wee strength circuit of kettlebell clean-and-presses, tuckups, and squats.
