Running 3:49:08 [1] 21.24 km (10:47 / km) +1521m 7:57 / km
shoes: 201304 Asics Gel Cumulus 13

This session can be referred to as "Death to Knees and Quads." I have long contemplated attempting some mountain runs in the Whites; today I decided to go for a long run while summiting Cannon Mountain, North Kinsman and South Kinsman. I brought my 18L running pack, 2.5L of gatorade/water mix, 2 shot blocks, 2 snickers bars, a bag of emergency gear, a long sleeve shirt, a wool hat, and my camera; I ran in running shorts and an O-top. All of these measures seemed adequate, though an even lighter pack would have been ideal. I'm reluctant to skimp on backup equipment when I am entirely unsupported.

The run was fantastic - sort of like the Blue Hills Skyline on steroids. There was copious rock scotch. I may have pushed too hard early; the 600m, 3.1 km ascent of Cannon took me about 45 minutes. Still, I had plenty of stamina to the end of the run, and my water ran out just as I finished. A wonderful day. Actual time was about 4:30; I stopped mostly to take pictures and consult my map. Kinsman ridge was rewarding but rugged. These are my 10th-12th 4000ers.

My route was:
- Pemi trail from Lafayette Campground to the Cannon ski area
- Kinsman Ridge trail from Cannon ski area to South Kinsman
- Fishin' Jimmy to Lonesome Lake, down to Campground

Hiking 1 [1]

Cannon, North and South Kinsman

Strength training 1 [1]

The legs are fatigued and will be prophylactically amputated.

Vetting Magnus's Day 2 courses at Townsend. Forgot Garmin, so distance is an estimate. While the woods have some areas of impenetrable mountain laurel, they are mixed with vast swaths of fantastic woods. Even in the summer, I found almost everywhere to be passable.

Tempo workout: 2x15 minute bouts. I just about managed the target pace of 4:00/km. The Hatch shell movie night ended between the two bouts, so I ran into a substantial crowd on the return trip.

Note

Great success! I just identified a magnificent piece of music that has been stuck in my head for about two days now. The piece is Liszt's Liebestraume #3. It was not a frustration to have it stuck in my head; I wanted to keep it there until I could identify it. Fortunately, it resided on a list of piano pieces I want to learn, so my brute force search didn't take too long. I originally thought it was Chopin. Heh.

Softball game: Rhymes with Code vs Barrel of Monkeys. We lost, 36-17. I went 1-3 at bat, with a pop fly, a single that led to a force out of a teammate and the end of the inning, and a single that led to a run. My outfielding consisted of only ground balls. We scored about ten runs in the second inning, but either our offense fizzled or they compensated.

Warmup.

Running intervals 26:47 intensity: (15:47 @1) + (11:00 @5) 5.34 km (5:01 / km) +1m 5:00 / km

And this, kids, is why we wear watches during interval workouts. My legs felt a bit crappy after all the sprinting in softball, but I decided to try for 4x1 km anyway. My target pace was in the 3:36 - 3:40/km range. I had only my obscured Garmin, so I had no sense of my times.

Splits: 3:32, 3:46, 3:53. Oops. After the second bout, I decided to stop at three. For dinner, I made a salad with avocado, chicken, tomatoes, lettuce, and baby carrots. The baby carrots kind of ruined the continuity and should be avoided or reduced in the future.

Easy run out and about the neighborhood. I ran with an open orienteering map and navigated from yellow open field to open field. My spatial understanding of the Tufts Campus with respect to the rest of Somerville improved. Tufts Park seemed like a pleasant place.
