This session can be referred to as "Death to Knees and Quads." I have long contemplated attempting some mountain runs in the Whites; today I decided to go for a long run while summiting Cannon Mountain, North Kinsman and South Kinsman. I brought my 18L running pack, 2.5L of gatorade/water mix, 2 shot blocks, 2 snickers bars, a bag of emergency gear, a long sleeve shirt, a wool hat, and my camera; I ran in running shorts and an O-top. All of these measures seemed adequate, though an even lighter pack would have been ideal. I'm reluctant to skimp on backup equipment when I am entirely unsupported.
The run was fantastic - sort of like the Blue Hills Skyline on steroids. There was copious rock scotch. I may have pushed too hard early; the 600m, 3.1 km ascent of Cannon took me about 45 minutes. Still, I had plenty of stamina to the end of the run, and my water ran out just as I finished. A wonderful day. Actual time was about 4:30; I stopped mostly to take pictures and consult my map. Kinsman ridge was rewarding but rugged. These are my 10th-12th 4000ers.
My route was:
- Pemi trail from Lafayette Campground to the Cannon ski area
- Kinsman Ridge trail from Cannon ski area to South Kinsman
- Fishin' Jimmy to Lonesome Lake, down to Campground
