In addition to the 3 km walk to the arena, we had a 4 km jog to the start. I ran with the Czech orienteer Barbora, and we chatted a bit.

I have much more analysis to come, but oof, Sweden is challenging. There were glimmers of goodness in the 12.1 km course, but I made too many mistakes despite (and sometimes because of) my caution. The overall result was very disappointing; I had a stupid five minute error on the first control, an eight minute mistake on control 13, and a few minutes on 2, 3, and 12. Still, I had a wonderful time in really interesting woods, and I held up ok physically with 1 Gu about halfway through. I get a second crack at the same woods tomorrow, and I am eager to test my mettle again. I finished a distant 26 minutes behind Boris, and 33 back of Andrew; the winning time was 85 (ouch).
While I was running on a trail from 2-3, a bear popped out of the woods about 30m ahead of me, seemed startled, and dashed back into the woods. I was momentarily frightened - as this bear was brown, and over a meter tall at the shoulder - but continued on unmolested.
The woods here are very technical, and my lack of practice with the terrain and the 1:15 scale exacerbate things. I tended to underestimate distances and underrun controls even while trying to mentally correct for it. Tomorrow, I need to run aggressively but confidently, make good plans, and execute them smoothly. Reading the contours is more important than the point features - with which I am more comfortable.
I briefly ran into Jeff and Judy at the finish chute, and hung out with Ross+Sam, the Canadians, and my house crew. Thierry and Tove (yay Tove!) won the day.
