Bowling 2 [1]

Game 1: X -- 5- 54 72 33 32 7/ X XX8 = 122
Game 2: 62 54 7- 25 71 7/ 8/ X 8- 6- = 109

Horrific. The staff at Lanes and Games encouraged me to buy shoes (which I had already planned) and gave me a free shoe rental with the jest that they would charge me double next time. The turkey at the end of the first game doesn't make up for the pathetic excuse for bowling I put up in frames 2-7. A double gutter??? Really? D-; see me after class.

I took a nap after my wind ensemble concert today, which delayed my run this afternoon. Conditions tonight were interesting - the temperature was 12 C, but it was raining steadily with a light breeze. I wore shorts and a long-sleeved shirt, which kept me cool but comfortable. I was completely soaked perhaps ten minutes into the run. An unexpected consequence of this run is that my shoes are now very clean.

I felt delightful, and light on my feet throughout the run. I ran a few 30-40s reps quite comfortably, and my ankle caused me no distress, though I perceive a difference in the responses of the ligaments of each leg.

I finished the first half of The Speed of Dark. Krishna, a friend of mine, recommended A Fire upon the Deep and Ringworld.

I have set about visiting and assessing all the NEOC maps to collect metadata on the maps and help prioritize our mapping efforts. Giacomo, Brendan, Ross, Sam, Jeff, and I went to High Rock, a map of F. Gilbert Hills State Forest in Foxborough, MA. Apparently NEOC has held A-meets at this map before, and it caught my attention when I examined all the NEOC map files that I have. Unfortunately, the only complete electronic version of it is a bitmap scan, though Bob Dangel is transcribing it in OCAD.

There was about 30 cm of snow on the ground, and while it was crusty and firm, it grew easier to punch through as the run went on. Sam and I had an amusing conversation during which we were tripping every fifteen seconds or so.

The terrain in the park is excellent, and the map is very good, though the rocks are undermapped and mapped somewhat inconsistently. The map was made in 1982, and I'm shocked that we haven't used High Rock in at least the past five years when it's so interesting and only 30 miles from Boston. While there are areas on the map that are green, and there does exist some green briar, the vegetation is passable. Sam and I discussed resurrecting the map for a NEOC 40th anniversary celebration in 2012. I think that if the map receives an update, it will be suitable terrain for an A-meet, perhaps as early as 2012. One of my main priorities as a board member and officer is increasing our use of quality terrain and improving our map quality in general.

Bowling 2 [1]

Bowling with Brendan, Stephen, and Lori. Another quartet of Ross, Sam, Dan, and Dan's girlfriend arrived shortly after we got our lane on the waiting list, and we were sundered.

It was a rough bowling night, saved only by an anomalously high strike streak.
Game 1: 8/ 3/ 4- X 71 9- 9- 9/ 44 6/8 = 115
Game 2: 8- X 7- 4/ 72 54 81 X 5- XX3 = 119

Sam is a monster, and she has unquestionably been promoted to (friendly!) bowling nemesis. She must be destroyed (in a friendly, happy sort of way). I failed to go running today due to lack of time, and I was chagrined. I'm strongly considering going to GNC in lieu of the New Bedford half.

I went on an easy jaunt about Cambridge. My ankle, while somewhat swollen, did not cause me any discomfort. I was conscious of its infirmity, so I concentrated on the muscles to maintain stability. Conditions were clear and calm, with a temperature of -6 C. It felt good to be running again.

I started an audionovel called The Speed of Dark; I have listened to about 90 minutes (of 16 hours), and I'm enthralled thus far. I finished with my usual 10 minute stretching routine.
