Orienteering 1:14:05 [1] 5.0 km (14:49 / km)
(injured) shoes: 200809 NB Absorb EX 12

Orienteering training at Hale Reservation prior to the CSU Annual Meeting. I was moving sluggishly so as to minimize the stress on my ankle, though I don't think I could have moved that much faster in my present state. While perhaps it was unwise to run at all - I ran a few hundred meters on Saturday with escalating pain - I felt fairly good during the run. I wanted to return at approximately 4 PM so I could eat and take part in the meeting (which didn't actually start until about 5:30). My ankle was growing sore, so I stopped at a convenient road and returned; the total distance I traveled was about 5 km.

Afterward, I ate spectacular food courtesy of Mark Webb's cooking skill and the organization and preparation of Pia and Sara Mae. The organizational meeting that followed both was generally productive and met my expectations. A few innocent bystanders very patiently endured the meeting and confusion. Surprisingly, no debate emerged about purchasing a set of SportIdent boxes or about how soon we would run our next A-meet. The general consensus is that Spring 2011 is the next target date (or Fall 2010 as a very optimistic early date, perhaps in cooperation with NEOC).

ARDF 20:00 [2]
shoes: 200809 NB Absorb EX 12

ARDF training with Les, Ross, and Lori. Les, who was serving as Coach in Vadim's stead, set out five controls without flags approximately two hundred meters from each other. The controls were on a five minute cycle; we were practicing quickly locating and converging on controls. I was hobbling around a bit because of my ankle, though apparently this helped in some way, as I was able to move more freely later in the day.

I found 2, 4, 1, 3, 5 in that order at minute 7, 9, 11, 13, and 20. Had I not completely wasted the first five minutes acquiring unimportant data and not lagged on control 5, I might have been able to finish in 10 minutes. However, I lack the speed and radio proficiency to complete the set in the fastest possible five minute period.

I found 2 with Ross (who spotted the battery), 4 with Lori (Lori found it), 1 with Lori (I found it), and 3 and 5 on my own. I resolved to bring orange tape and surreptitiously tape the batteries before Les puts them out next time.

Strength training 10:00 [3]

Pushups, situps, back exercises.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

I am getting antsy not exercising, but my ankle still hurts, and I do not want to aggravate the injury further. I hope tomorrow I can go on an easy run; at the very least, I will do some weight training.

I also decided to scrub my plans for "parody week;" it became clear to me that my actions might have an unintended effect on those whom I parodied. Specifically, I might discourage distinctive behavior which I appreciate and enjoy by mocking it. The potential for being misunderstood is too great.

I yearn to run.

Note
(injured) (rest day)

Rest day to recover more from the ARDF events and rest my left ankle. The administration here at iansmith have decided to make next week "Parody Week," during which I will attempt to imitate the writing styles (and quite possibly training patterns) of training logs I enjoy that have very particular characteristics. I hope you will find the effort super dee duper awesome!

Running 34:31 [3] 6.0 km (5:45 / km)
(injured) shoes: 200811 NB Absorb EX 12

I stayed late at my office discussing math with a coworker until after the T stopped running. While my company does pay for cab rides, I decided to take a short run home. In retrospect, given the discomfort in my left ankle, it would have been wiser to take a cab. The ankle is still swollen; I will take tomorrow off completely to rest it.

Running 29:38 intensity: (26:38 @2) + (3:00 @4) 5.87 km (5:03 / km)
(injured) shoes: 200809 NB Absorb EX 12

An easy late night run (2:30 AM); conditions were humid and clear with a temperature of 17 C. My body is a bit sore and showing stress from the ARDF races. I moderately rolled my left ankle several times over the weekend, and the ligaments hurt as I rotate my foot. It is not painful to put weight on the foot, and I can kick without too much trouble. My right achilles and right knee also show some discomfort, so I was ginger.

I focused on keeping my cadence high (c. 180), which was awkward. I felt like I was working harder (and my pace was faster than I planned); I had to shift my breathing to 3/3. I ran 4x30 second strides interspersed throughout the run; in the future, I will keep them all within a shorter time frame.

I discovered that I have coincidentally been using the same notation for breathing rates as Jack Daniels in Daniel's Running Formula. While I am thrilled (as though this somehow validates what really was just a method for my own record keeping), it is the most obvious method for recording such rates.

Strength training 10:00 [2]
shoes: 200809 NB Absorb EX 12

Stretching and 50x crunches, 30x pushups. I also did a bit of back stuff, ankles, and calves.
