Park-O at Cat Rock set by Pia. I pulled off a win by about 90s over Giovanni, but my race had much to be desired. I tried to hack my way through the swamps going right to 1 when I should have run wide on trails. I missed 3 by 5s left getting pushed around by vegetation. My attack to 6 was sloppy, and I drifted too far right. Control 7 was a long leg with a mix of trails and open fields, but I was slow on its execution. I missed 8 right when I didn't understand the rock features for a loss of 20s. I saw Alex picking up controls on my approach into 12; unfortunately, I exited 12 poorly and didn't see my attackpoint into 13, losing maybe 30s. A decent but unspectacular effort. Giovanni picked up the finish punch and walked a few meters away as I was finishing.

I'm currently undefeated in O-races in New England - two NEOC meets, an UNO meet, and a Park-O. This is undeserved, as the fields haven't been that deep at these races, but I am motivated to keep this streak going. I need Ethan "Hey, Mats" to come down to some races to test my mettle.

Blue course (!) at Bear Brook State Park by UNO; courses set by Ernst, Bob Lux, and Jim Arsenault. The orienteering was fabulous today; it was cool, white to light green woods, some deadfall. I eked out a narrow win over Giovanni despite running slowly and blowing several minutes on one control (10). I could have run 70 on the 8.2 km course if I hadn't made a stupid mistake, but 60 is attainable for speedy person.

Today was the first of the (poorly advertised) New England Challenge - a series of major local meets by each of the four main New England clubs trying to encourage cross-club attendance. My reasoning is this: every club has a mix of major and minor events. For NEOC, e.g., the minor events are often WYOG or even WYO at small, frequented parks like Menotomy, Hammond Pond, and even Prospect Hill. These events are great bread and butter, but the major events usually with longer courses, better terrain, and longer travel are the substance of the schedule. For NEOC, these would be the Mt. Tom, Baldwin Hill, Nobscot, High Rock, Townsend, Earl's, and say Breakheart events. Someone not in the club might not be able to tell at a glance the difference between the two; if each club then nominates a few of its events as "big deals," and we cooperate schedules to avoid overlap, then the really serious people can go to more of these, and the casual enthusiasts can try a few events on new, spectacular terrain. The added effort is minimal, since the clubs were putting on the events anyway. Scheduling and advertising just maximizes the bang for organizer and attendee buck.

If this approach is successful, maybe one event per club per semester is feasible - like a little regional league. Today's event had A-meet quality maps, terrain and courses with simpler logistics. It's hard to imagine an easier way to get good training in.

Thanks to everyone who came out! The UNO guys really enjoyed having more Massfolk at their event.

The next events in this series (about 1 per club) are:
- May 17, NEOC Mt. Tom
- Fall 2015, WCOC
- Fall 2015, CSU
- September, UNO Pawtuckaway camping weekend

Orienteering 44:29 [3] 6.27 km (7:06 / km) +69m 6:44 / km
18c shoes: 201410 Inov-8 Oroc 280s

NEOC local meet Red course at Needham Town Forest, set by Jeff Schapiro; listed as 5.7 km.

I had signed up to pick up controls; I planned to arrive at around 11:30 and run a course or two before pickup at 2. When I woke at 10, I shot that plan down for a bit more sleep, and arrived at the meet a shade before 1. Jeff kindly let me run the course, and I finished before the 2pm course close time and with a number of people still in the woods. I have long advocated the start window be 10-12 in NEOCland to make it easier on meet directors, and I'm a bit ashamed to have abused that.

My run was ok; I didn't warm up to get out earlier. I didn't feel like I was moving very fast, and I think given the high visibility and good running conditions, 6:00/km was attainable for someone in shape. I had decent flow, with good exits and reading the full leg before leaving. Some bobbles: I was pushed around by a marsh leaving 3 and found myself further north than planned, losing 20-30s. I did some unnecessary climb leaving 7 and couldn't make sense inside the circle at 8. I was pushed around by green en route to 11 and swung right, 20s. I made a dumb route choice and crossed a green marsh on 12-13 instead of going around, 30s. I hesitated for 15s in the circle at 14 when I saw rock that wasn't on the map.

I learned a while ago to use contours, major trails, marshes, and some rock features for navigation at Needham, so I wasn't bothered by the numerous excess mountain bike trails. I think my biggest gripe with the map is that the contours seem strange in places, and remapping this with LIDAR contours is a priority. It's a small but fun patch of terrain - especially early or late enough in the season that the vegetation is hospitable. Very good course by Jeff.

Control pickup, including a 1.5 km loop by the finish that I didn't record. I saw a majestic woodpecker at split #1 with dark, patterned wings and head and a lighter underbelly. I suspect it was a female Downy woodpecker.

I'm the chair of the NEOC A-meet planning group and the NEOC Mapping committee. I don't know that I'm the most qualified; it's apparently relatively easy to assume authority in non-profits.

The A-meet planning group, which in my mental model of the organization drives the major mapping initiatives, meets about twice per year and discusses plans. We're currently planning on an A-meet at High Rock in April 2016, at Mt. Tom in Spring 2017, and in north central MA for 2018. One of my current tasks is to figure out where else Marcello should map once he finishes the new High Rock map.

Apart from discussions of possible maps, my primary method for finding new map possibilities has consisted of browsing google maps and searching various public land listings. It turns out Trustees of Reservation's website has a number of candidates at a glance; it's unclear if we can always get land use permission, but they do let us use Powissett and Rocky Woods.

I found two neat places: Noon Hill is a mix of Trustees land and town of Medfield, but the patch of terrain was fantastic. It's very reminiscent of Rocky Woods and maybe Blue Hills West. There were vast swaths of open forest, some light green areas, and a few dense marshes. The terrain was more runnable than Needham Town Forest, and the topography was interesting and varied. Apart from a number of trails, stone walls would allow for beginner courses. While there isn't an arena site, there are two possible start locations. Both have limited parking, but I think we could park along the side of Noonhill Rd, which is a slow gravel road. The patch of terrain is only about 1 - 1.5 sq km, but this is fine for a standard local meet map. Also, Noon Hill is in Medfield - a 40 minute drive from Boston.

I also drove by Moose Hill Farm - which would be a great name for a map. "Moose Hill." I get chills. It was getting dark when I arrived, so i didn't get out into the terrain. It's conveniently located next to I-95, and it has a little farm with some extant parking. It has a large field that would be perfect for an arena, and it also measures about 1 - 1.5 sq km. At a glance, Moose Hill looked a little thicker than Noon Hill, but still inviting.

Running 13:00 [1] 2.5 km (5:12 / km)

Warmup run from the Broad to North Point Park. Garmin was low on energy, so I didn't log it. I waited a couple minutes for traffic, too.

Orienteering 14:39 [4] 3.42 km (4:17 / km) +1m 4:17 / km

Park-O #1 at North Point Park, a new map. North Point is a cute little area; it is perfect for beginners. I don't think it's interesting enough for an advanced sprint. The course was very much a runner's course, and while it made very good use of what was available, the park is just too simple. Night-O with just e-punch boxes might make it more interesting.

Despite the simplicity of the location, I did not have a perfect run. I was focusing on smoothness - knowing where I was going on the next leg, folding my map before reaching the control, good flow. I did a poor job of reading the whole leg, which got me into trouble at 16 and 17 for 5s and 10s errors. Otherwise, I was not fast; I narrowly beat Alex for the win. Giacomo would have run 13 flat or faster.

I was feeling ok, and a Park-O isn't enough activity, so I did a Museum of Science - BU loop at sub-tempo effort, but a shade harder than easy pace. The wind was intense in some places. Time to get back on the train to fastland. No burritos today.

Easy morning jog; I felt a bit more energetic than yesterday, so hopefully this is a passing condition rather than complete aerobic collapse. I added a few strides to get the legs moving. A little muscle guy along the outside of my left calf is tight from Billygoat. I ran to Cedar St and back with some nice little hills.

2015 Billygoat. A terrible race: slow, unfocused, tired. It's hard to imagine being less ready for this race. The most obvious conclusion is that I'm very slow right now; my training over the past six months has been awful. I was exhausted coming in from a vicious week at work, and after it was apparent how poorly I was doing, I didn't keep up the mental concentration to avoid a big 6+ minute error at 12. I was feeling pretty miserable when I started getting stabbed by vegetation running to 14, and only pulled it together enough to outkick Peter Z on the run in. A disaster.

There's really nothing to do but start training for the fall. Apart from my performance, the organization, course, and field were all excellent. Kudos to Misha for a tremendous race.

Bowling 2 [1]

After dinner, Magnus and I went bowling at Port Jervis Bowl. We were among the only ones there, despite the hour. We both improved in the second game; Magnus had a nice showing with 3 strikes and 4 spares. I was only somewhat displeased with my 3 strikes and 7 spares; I guttered or hit only one pin on 5/21 first ball shots.

Note

Training this week was a little disappointing; I did nothing on three days when only one is acceptable. Work was a bit crazy, and my sleep also suffered.

This week has the Billygoat, which will be long and intense. Agenda:
- 6k intervals with CSU
- 30 minutes (~7.5 km) of tempo
- 10 hill repeats
- 75+ total km, 6 days of running 25+ minutes. 75k should be pretty straightforward with the Goat.

A question for my audience: I live on a little hill that's about 300m with 25m of climb. Given two other quality sessions (I, T) in a week, which would be most beneficial: 12 sprinty repeats of the hill on one day with 2 days of easy run, or 4 sprinty repeats of the hill on three easy days?

Easy warmup to wake up the legs. They felt a little slow; my left shin has been aching mildly at the starts of workouts.

NEOC local meet red course at Prospect Hill by Bo Nielsen. I've never run a Red course at Prospect; today's 6.6/250 is about as long a course as Prospect Hill can allow without a map exchange. I squeaked out a two minute victory over Giovanni, but I felt sluggish. My flow and quickness was pretty solid for the first half of the course - good exits, reading ahead - but I started making small mistakes on the second half. I had trouble in the circle on controls 13-16, then made a questionable route choice on 17. I was surprised to know my time was only 55 minutes; it felt much longer.

Conditions were delightful: sunny, blue skies, 18 C. Turnout was solid with a little more than 100 starts and maybe 150 attendees. Long lost CSU member Audun was in attendance, and what appear to be two Scandis. Lars Johnsen is a Norwegian student at Northeastern; he was wearing Trimtex socks, and finished second a few minutes back of Tim Parson. Though I didn't meet him, Kasper Ingerslev from Denmark club Ballerup OK was very competitive in 3rd on Red.

I should stop wearing the Baregrips for anything longer than 30 minutes; they're basically socks with dobbs. My left plantar fascia started aching a near the end of the course.

Control pickup; Bo divided the 34 controls among Tobias, Bob Dangel, and me. I grabbed a loop of ten, then picked up the five closest to the finish. I ran into coach Phil who exhorted me to "get faster."

Evening tempo workout. I elected not to go to the planned 3k time trial at Harvard because I was underdressed for 2 C, drizzly, and windy. Conditions had improved by the late evening, and I acquired pants. I warmed up for 25 minutes, then did 3 bouts of about 8 minutes. Pacing for the first bout was nearly perfect, just a touch over target 4:00/km. For the second bout, I turned on the 180 bpm techno and overdid it. Running in the still night on that second bout was bliss. I improvised a third bout back to Davis, then apparently cooled down at a glacial pace. Recovery periods were probably too long. Relatedly: I'm curious how many 6-minute mile repeats I can run with 2 minute breaks.

Note

During our travels, Giacomo had an idea that sounded intriguing: a single large US O-Champs meet. Combining SML and Classic would be impractical, but imagine a megaweekend with Night-O, SML, and Relay champs.

Three feasible approaches, ideally for a three day weekend:
R night: Night-O
Fri-Sun: SML
Monday: Relay

F night: Night-O
Sat-Sun: SML (compressed)
Monday: Relay

F morning: Sprint, F night: Night-O
Sat-Sun: Middle, Long
Mon: Relay

SML always gets a large draw, so piggybacking the Relay champs on the event would increase its attendance. Having a single weekend would also encourage more people to attend - because this mega weekend and Classic champs would be the two largest events of the year. The only danger would be five awards ceremonies, but maybe we could find an auctioneer to do it.

I find myself wondering if NEOC Spring 2018 could pull off this event, possibly with an assist from UNO or CSU. Baldwin Hill for Night, sprint tbd, Pearl Hill (new map) for Middle, Townsend for long, tbd for Relay. Pawtuckaway would also be an intriguing possibility, especially since you could basically have all five events there.

CSU outdoor track workout at Harvard. The workout was 2x(1000, 600, 600, 400); I arrived during the second 600 and tagged onto Terry. After finishing the workout - mostly hanging onto Terry, I ran the last 1000 and 600 solo. My pacing wasn't bad; I would hope to run 3:35, 2:06, and 80. There were about 100 people on the track, including a spirited cohort of elementary age children running 200s.
