Jeff Schapiro and I left Boston at 6:10 AM for the drive to West Point, and we arrived at about 9:15 because Jeff made excellent time. I suspected that my best case performance would be unremarkable, as my fitness has deteriorated substantially since I broke my leg in August. Nevertheless, I changed quickly, warmed up on the run to the start, and adopted my best orienteering mindset. I have spent most of my orienteering time over the past two months organizing instead of racing, and my racing subroutines were rusty from lack of use.

I found the microorienteering to be particularly challenging on the course. While I was always aware of where I was, lack of concentration sometimes caused small slips inside the circle that cost significant time. Control 1 was easy enough to approach - up a ridge - but pinpointing the boulder was hard, and I was sluggish. I made two mistakes to 4 - first, by being dragged too far to the left, toward the bridge route instead of my intended hill route, and then again by hesitating on my final approach. I chose a costly route to 6 by taking the trail to the left and descending the reentrant. I was confused on my approach into 8; after ascending the ridge, I wasn't certain where I was, and my gps track has an unfortunate deviation despite the fact that I was on course. I was happy with my route to 11, though it was slow. On 12, I drifted right and got stuck in some thick green. Nick Duca punched 12 right after me, and we took off on different routes to 13, which he punched just before me. I took the high route to 14, and beat him to it. Apparently Ross was closing on me at 14, but I didn't hear him, and he breezed by just before 15.

My race was marred by numerous small errors - 1, 4, 7, 8, and 12. I ran slowly, and I tended to make mistakes after climbing. However, given my present conditioning, this is not a surprising result, and I am not overly disappointed.

Orienteering race 21:50 [5] 2.79 km (7:50 / km) +53m 7:09 / km

The West Point sprint was tricky and more technical than I expected. The first two-thirds of the race were forest controls along a cliff edge with substantial climb, and the race finished among buildings at the Round Pond campsite. In the past, my stamina has been insufficient to perform well during the second race of the day (e.g. the Sycamore Scramble). Today, I found I had strength left, but my top speed is considerably slower than it was a year ago.

My race was not clean, and I lacked flow. I overran 11, and apparently hesitated at 16, but the best characteristic of the race was sluggish. Many people apparently struggled with the race - so my overall placing relative to the field wasn't bad, but Ross's time relative to my own (I was 40% back) is indicative of the scope of my weakness. At West Point 2010 and US Sprint Champs 2009, I was 25% and 18% back of Ross respectively.

While my race was poor, I did enjoy the course and found the challenge satisfying.

On Sunday morning, we ran the first exercise of the training day I planned at Hogencamp. The exercise consisted of a control pick followed by three descending o-tervals. I followed behind the group after some length to retrieve the controls. The GPS tracks are actually Alex's; I included them for reference.

The second exercise was a line-O about Silvermine. The line-O had three loops, but I decided to only run the first. Even though I designed the exercise, it was very challenging. I ran without a compass. The ticks were numerous, and the vegetation was unyielding in places. The visibility was excellent, but the running was less pleasant. I was bitten by a tick, though it paid for the deliciousness with its life.

The GPS track is mine.

I participated in the first CSU Park-O of 2011, set by Michael Commons at Danehy. It isn't obvious that "orienteering" is the correct classification, but it was good physical training. Brendan started about a minute after me and finished a minute before; despite my best efforts, he cruised past on the way to control 11.

I went on a pleasant run around Fresh Pond to break up a long work day. I ran two circuits of the reservoir and contemplated a third, but I decided to err on the side of prudence and called it a day. During the run, I ran 4x30 strides. I listened to The Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailors, a historical account of the Battle off Samar, a naval battle between the US and Japan during the Philippines campaign in World War II.

Strength training 20:00 [3]

After running, I did two strength circuits:
- squats, 25; 80 lb
- calf raises, 25; 80 lb
- lat pull down, 25; 80 lb
- leg press, 25; 120 lb (I think the machine has an IMA of 1/2, so 240 lbs)
- seated leg curl, 25; 80 lb
- seated leg extensions, 25; 80 lb
- chest fly, 25; 80 lb
- tuck ups, 50
- kayakers, 50

Bowling 6 [1]
shoes: Dexter Ricky II Bowling

Deplorable, catastrophic, humiliating.

Game 1: 63 8/ 6- 5- -9 63 7/ X 51 8- = 104
Game 2: 3/ 8- 3/ 8- 8/ X 33 X 45 9/7 = 139
Game 3: X 81 -5 9/ 8- 7- 9/ 62 9/ 8- = 116
Game 4: 7/ 34 17 8/ 54 X 6- -9 71 4/- = 101
Game 5: X 16 8- 72 9/ 71 X 7- 8- 81 = 107
Game 6: 6- 9- 9- 9- 33 X 8/ 81 72 6- = 101

The frames which best capture the fiasco today are the 2nd-4th frames of Game 6; I set up three consecutive 1-pin spare opportunities and missed all three. Three shots, each of which offered exactly one pin as a target, and I was unable to convert a single spare. Four times, in 62 opportunities, I threw a gutter ball on a full rack of ten pins.

Strike percentage: 8/62 = 12.9%
Spare conversion: 14/52 = 26.9%
First ball average: 6.60
One-pin spares: 5/8 = 62.5%

Running 42:00 [1] 7.37 km (5:42 / km)

Easy run home from work, with a circuit of Fresh Pond. I listened to an episode of Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me from January. A light rain fell, the temperature was about 6 C, and I ran in running shorts and two short-sleeved shirts. I forgot my Garmin at home, so I had no sense of pace or time - I just ran at a comfortable pace.

I'm still sluggish, but I developed a rhythm in my second 500m freestyle that I thought I could sustain without pauses at each end of the 25m pool. I swam at the War Memorial Pool. My left leg felt a little weird, but I think that's to be expected given that the pressures I'm applying are unusual (normal to the bone rather than parallel to it).

Bowling 5 [1]
shoes: Dexter Ricky II Bowling

A mediocre session, though I was in a hurry. I modified my release to add more power to my follow through, and I think that fatigued my right arm considerably. I need to do some weight training before I start playing around with my follow through. While my strike percentage was up somewhat this session, my spare percentage (which is a better measure of skill) was atrocious.

Game 1: 7- 9/ 7/ 7/ 81 81 X 7/ 71 63 = 131
Game 2: X 25 81 X 81 16 44 X 1/ 18 = 116
Game 3: X 8- X 72 -8 71 81 71 71 XXX = 125
Game 4: 36 7- X 63 X 9/ -8 X X 63 = 136
Game 5: 3/ 7- 7/ 9- 9/ 36 72 -3 5/ 9- = 114

Strike percentage: 13/52 = 25%
Spare conversion: 10/39 = 25.6%
First ball pins: 6.83

Note

On the Hammond Pond local meet:

What went well:
- Magnus Bjorkman set great courses, making good use of what challenging terrain exists at Hammond Pond. I heard only praise for the course design.
- Magnus streamered all the non-trivial controls, simplifying setting flags
- All the controls were in the right places
- The weather was excellent, and turnout was good despite limited advertising
- Jim Paschetto was tremendously helpful, running registration and troubleshooting problems
- I ran the meet on OR on my lappy
- There was water on the course, and people seemed to appreciate that.
- The thermal splits printer worked fine.
- A few people told me they heard about the meet from my AP event entry.
- Everyone seemed to have a good time

It should be noted that Jim and I planned to have the NEOC printer there, from which we could print additional maps as needed, and other miscellaneous printouts, like intermittent results.

What didn't go well:
- I didn't print enough yellow maps (15)
- I forgot to print control descriptions (though I hoped to print them on site)
- While the laptop communicated with the printer fine, the printer couldn't load paper, and we were unable to troubleshoot the problem
- The AC car adapter shorted out, so we were unable to get power to either the printer or the laptops
- My laptop (Windows 7) decided to lose contact with the SI USB Master station intermittently, necessitating reconnecting the station, restarting OR and/or my computer.
- OR decided to overwrite some of the results incorrectly, i.e. not associating a stick with the latest entry for that SI stick number.
- After driving to Marlboro at 7 AM to pick up the thermal splits printer, I was late starting to set controls, and set the last one at 10:10.
- People had to wait for yellow course maps to be reclaimed from finished competitors, as we ran out of maps. Some people ended up copying the yellow course onto other maps so they could run.

In short, while the meet in general went well, there were numerous glitches that emerged, mostly from untested electronic systems. In particular, had the printer worked properly, had OR correctly detected the master station all the time, and had I set all the controls before 10 AM, the meet would have been a success. As it is, I must attempt to solve several problems and rectify the situation for future meets. I'm hoping the master station issue is a driver problem, though I downloaded a new driver a few days ago.

Obviously one solution to the results problem is to assign each person their own SI stick, but that isn't always possible. A general solution to OR + SI + reusing sticks must be found, and I'm not convinced OR solves that problem correctly.

Note

I spent considerable time designing and thinking about the courses at the meet on 3 April. I was particularly proud that while the brown and green controls were subsets of the red controls, the fraction of common legs was very small. While I visited all the controls, I didn't run the courses (though I hope to later).

Analysis of the red course, and results:
  • Ctrl 2: While this barely counts as route choice, I was pleased that the straight-over-the-hill and contour-around options were about evenly split by competitors. I would guess that straight was a bit faster because of the trail.
  • Ctrl 4: Again, not a serious route choice, but all three options I considered - north of the line on the trail, straight through the woods, and along the road - were used. The trail and road give you time to read ahead, but I suspect the faster woods speed people would do better off straight.
  • Ctrl 5: This was the most interesting route choice, though I liked the Green course's leg 5-6 better. Among the people who posted gps tracks, the first half of the leg was the most varied, ending with straight on the line or around on the trail to the right for the last half. I probably would have run straight, but I like that both options were comparable.
  • Ctrl 9: No choices here, but I was impressed with how straight some of the tracks are (e.g. Sam, PG, Ali). There was good compass work. Apologies to sending people through the marshy rocks a second time.
  • Ctrl 10: In hindsight, moving the control to the west 50m would have made it much more interesting. The location was partly determined by Green leg 5-6, though.
  • Ctrl 12: I didn't expect so many people to attack from the trail on the north. I'm also unhappy with the map in the southwest area; apologies to all who suffered there. The area around eleven is a bit strange, too.
  • Ctrl 15: I was hoping for a bit more variety, because while the big reentrant to the left is an appealing linear feature, it is rocky. I had hoped more people would go straight, up-and-over, and a few brave souls tried it. It looks like contouring around to the left - neither low nor high - was best. No one went up the reentrant just north of 14 right of the line to the hill top; maybe the spur just to the right was better for running.
  • Ctrl 16: While the rocks are a bit dubiously mapped, no one seemed to have trouble finding this control (that I heard).
  • Ctrl 17: Of the six gps tracks I have seen, only Ross (a mountain goat) went straight over the hill. Everyone else went right to the trail. It was supposed to be a choice, but I was hoping more people would consider straight. The choice strongly depends on your aptitude for climb, especially late in a course, but the trail might be faster in most cases.

Feedback is always welcome!

Setting controls. This captures two control loops I set out on, with eight controls each time, and my water setting expedition. I ran back to the start to make sure the event was starting properly, ran to my car to set the water, then ran back to the start to make sure I knew which was the water control. I then drove a bit and noticed my watch was still going. I walked about five hundred meters with four gallons of water after stopping my watch. I should have set a second water control - given that the water control on the Green course was the penultimate control. Even on a cool day (50 F), the rule of a water stop for each 3 km of course is a good one. [N >= floor(length(course)/3)] My apologies to all adversely affected.

Bowling 4 [1]

Dismal. My shots were very imprecise, as best reflected by my spare percentage. Maybe I was tired or distracted; I cannot account for my performance. I hit only 4 of 10 nine-pin spares (where you only have to hit one pin standing), which is one of the best indicators of precision and accuracy. I failed to exceed my 2011 average score of 128.8.
