Tesla had an announcement for their Tesla Semi, an electric tractor trailer. According to the announcement, the performance specs, economics, and safety of the Tesla are superior to an equivalent Diesel truck. The announcement is also proposing to build a network of solar powered charging stations.

The announcement had the cult-of-personality feel of an Apple product release, but there is great potential for these solutions. Tesla has succeeded in making electric cars and electric advances sexy, and to quote Musk on the release of the Roadster: "The point of doing this is to give a hard core smackdown to gasoline powered cars."
Whether or not Tesla succeeds in implementing all of its grand vision for the future is somewhat immaterial; it has already succeeded in shifting the conversation in an otherwise static industry.
