Orienteering race 58:39 [5] **** 3.4 km (17:15 / km) +50m 16:04 / km

Classic Champs, Day 2. 10:25 start. Excellent weather again. As advertised, quite different terrain from yesterday. There were some monstrous errors, with good orienteers losing more than an hour on a single leg. 3 and 8 were the biggest problems; each was the first leg that entered a new kind of terrain. I made a 10 minute error on 3; did well on 8, but made a 2 min error on 9 (Charlie and I were together for most of the latter and were running fast at the end and not thinking carefully.) Otherwise, did quite well, finishing with the 5th fastest time on Brown despite the big error. That pulled me into 2nd US in M65 (which is as much as one can hope for when PG is in your age class).
Note: I had the fastest split on #4, but that's deceiving. While I was lost looking for 3, I spotted a depression and thought it looked like the one near 4; went and checked, and sure enough, there was #4. Raced back to #3 (seeing all sorts of people headed the other way, including George Walker, Don Davis, Charlie, Linda Kohn and Rich Parker), then ran really hard back to 4 without even having to look at my map, actually passing Rich and Linda well before the control.
Wish I could run in terrain like this much more often - that would really help develop my orienteering skills.
After the event, drove out to Rye Beach on the NH coast and went for a little walk on the very wide and flat beach. Quite lovely, and reminded me of my decade living on the Jersey shore.

Warm up, mostly jogging to the start. Legs felt surprisingly good. My lower right back had really tightened up after the car ride back to the hotel after yesterday's race, and moving was quite difficult overnight and this morning. But as I jogged, my back loosened up and didn't bother me much the rest of the day.
