Orienteering race (Sprint-O NRE) 24:54 [5] **** 2.3 mi (10:50 / mi) +10m 10:41 / mi
spiked:15/18c shoes: Salomon SC3 Bl/Bl 3

San Joaquin Delta College, Stockton, CA. Sunny, very chilly at first, not bad by the time we ran. First use of this excellent, complex venue. This was the fourth and final event of Rex's weekend of sprints. Starts were delayed several times after Rex locked his keys in his car in the morning. Finally started about an hour and a half late.

Good run spoiled by an unmapped fence (gate was supposed to be open) blocking my route from 12 to 13. Alas, that fence made me doubt that I was in the right place, and I ran around like an idiot for a long time, leading to a 4.5 min error. Wound up only 7th of 16 on Brown-Green (should have been 3rd) and 3rd of 7 on Brown.

Map was sufficiently complex that I often had to run at less than normal pace. Made four small errors (besides the disaster leaving #12) but generally steady and accurate throughout, though several times I was unable to plan ahead sufficiently due to having to concentrate on the current leg.

No #1 ranked splits. #2's at 3, 7, 11; #3's at 5, 9, 18; and #4's at 8, 10, 14.

1. Lost maybe 5 seconds because I had trouble locating the start triangle on the map.

2. Fell for the trap, starting straight (hadn't looked ahead much while I was heading to #1), but corrected reasonably quickly. Lost about 10 seconds.

4. AP flagged me for an 8 sec error. Don't recall having any difficulty. Perhaps I slowed a little trying to figure out where to go next?

6. The 2->7 loop, consisting of 4 controls close together, two of which were visited twice, required a lot of concentration! When I got to 5, suddenly thought I'd skipped 6, started that way, stopped for a few of seconds to straighten things out, realized I hadn't skipped anything and that where I was now headed was exactly where I should be headed, so just lost those few seconds when I stopped. Lost about 10 secs.

8. Passed Jay just as I got into the circle, and then got passed by Tori before getting to the marker.

9. Excellent job on this complex leg, one of my highest split rank of the day, 3rd.

12. Stupidly didn't look at the clue before arriving in the circle, ran completely around the bottom of the stairways before looking and realizing I had to go up the stairs. Looks like I lost about half a minute, so maybe I lost a little time somewhere else in the leg as well.

13. Already described above. The unmapped fence wasn't my fault, but should have been able to keep this to a 20-sec error instead of completely falling apart.

15. AP flagged me for a 14 sec error, but I don't recall having any difficulty. Perhaps I was overly cautious because I'd made the huge error in this area only minutes earlier?
