It took longer than we thought to get to the meet site and neither Ross or I read the meet notes, so we didn't know there was a bus ride. I read the meet notes to Ross and he got ready and left, and then realized that I was now probably going to be late. Got ready quickly and jumped on the next bus. I ran the whole way up the hill to the start and arrived *just* in time. I cleared and checked and then went right up to the maps. As I picked up my map the whistle blew. I made sure it was the correct course, took two slow, deep breaths and then started. On the way to #1 I realized I didn't have control descriptions. I checked the map and was relieved to see them there.

Day 1 of Classic Champs.

The race started well, despite the lack of control descriptions and the rush to the start. Found #1 with no trouble and headed off to #2 with the plan to see the two big swamps. Unfortunately, I never noticed when I ran over the top of the second one. Things weren't quite matching up, but I kept going on my compass trying to make things make sense. I then went off a cliff and looked left, where I saw a control sitting in a reentrant that looked to be the right size and orientation. I thought that I still hadn't yet hit the big swamp, but things were a bit confusing around me. I figured that I was close and it was about right and I would kick myself if I didn't check it. I jogged the 20 feet over and... yep, it was mine! I felt a bit lucky there and figured I had just used all my luck for the race.

Things continued to go well until 6. I told myself that I was going to run down the hill and the drop off slightly to the left at the end. Unfortunately, I didn't really need to drop left at all, I should have just run all the way out the nose. I dropped into the reentrant along the hill right where the control should have been distance-wise, and there was nothing there. So I continued to run down the reentrant hoping it was in the next low area. After a bit, I stopped, relocated and climbed back up the hill. But then I didn't know how far I had gone. After checking a few low areas, I saw the signs for the boundary line, relocated and then no problem.

7-9 went well again. I knew that 10 was different and it looked challenging. I ran down the hill and wasn't sure where I crossed the trail - first mistake. I was aware of the other reentrant to the west of mine, but I still somehow got sucked into the wrong one. Went down it and found another control. At this point I was pretty sure that if I went over the nose I would see another reentrant with a nice long cliff. And I was right. So I had to climb the 5 contours back up. Omph. That was not fun.

Finished strong with no troubles after that. An ok race, with two problems caused by the fact that I was running too fast without taking the time to make a better plan.

Easy run. Hard to get out the door, but once it out it was quite beautiful. I hate having a cold and being sleep deprived. There just isn't enough time in the day.

Ran over to the Reservoir with Hill on our day off. Did 4x2min, which felt dreadful. Cold? Or just really this out of shape? Sigh. Beautiful day though! And it was great to have someone to run with. I'm a disaster when I try to get out of the house on my own.

Wretham State Forest for a local meet. I don't really enoy running through blueberry up to my chest. And my nose was life a faucet. I hate having a cold. I was having trouble making my eyes and my brain connect. I would look at the map, but not make sense of it. Slow day, which I'm blaming on the cold and high blueberry.
