Running up to the start with Hill and then running back and forth along the trail before the start.

Middle Distance Race at Team Trials.

Middle distance races are certainly not my favorite and I especially seem to struggle during this race on Team Trials weekend. I knew it would be technical so I resolved to be slow and careful. This plan worked fairly well, although I baubled a few controls and lost at least 30 seconds (1 I missed and hit the swamp beyond it, 5 I also missed and had to cut back through the green, 9 I overran and had to stop at the top of the steep bank before turning around and finding it behind me). I also ran about 30 seconds up the trail the wrong way after crossing the road to #11. I really missed #6, coming off the spur in the wrong spot and crossing the stream only to hit the vege boundary. Even once I knew I was there I still had trouble and I ended up going back to the stream and attempting to find the bend. I didn't find the bend, but I found the hill and small pond to the west of the control. I lost about 2 minutes there. Despite all this, I feel ok about the race because I never had the completely lost with no way out feeling that I have felt in my last few races. Eveyone else had trouble too so I ended up finishing well despite all the mistakes. On a positive note, I was much more in control than in the past, even though it meant giving up a lot of my speed. I find myself having to stop to look at the map - maybe I need glasses?

Walked up the hill to the start and got there pretty early. Then ran back and forth between the start and the parking lot and did some strides. Legs felt tired - especially on the uphills. Good thing it was a downhill sprint! We watched everyone leave the start to see which way to begin. Hill ran straight and pretty much everyone else did as well. We thought that Pavi would look at her map before blindly going where everyone else went, but nope! She set off running in that direction before she even turned over her map!

Team Trials - Sprint

Arriving in the early afternoon and went out to the model. Hill and I walked around as I was too lazy to put on running clothes. We tested out some routes by walking separate ways. Also noticed that I am too short to cross the "crossable" walls in most places. Ross said he vaulted over it, while I attempted to get over it at running speed and had to haul myself up on my stomach and, very gracefully mind you, fall over the other side. Yeah, it was faster to go around :)

The sprint was very fun and just what you would expect from a campus sprint. Even knowing that I could get trapped I ran into 2 traps. On the way to 5 I didn't notice that the wall went all the way around, although even if I did I would have gone that was anyway, so I only lost time there in hesitation. Then I didn't noticed that you couldn't get in fronm the back on #14, so I quickly changed my route to go through the building via the stairs. But when I ran in where the stairs were supposed to be all I saw was straight wall. I stopped, checked the map, moved closer, checked the map again, and then must have moved in a way where I could tell that the wall wasn't actually one solid wall, but had a break in it where the stairs were. I was apparently not the only person to do this, but lost 30 seconds on bad route and standing around. Then I ran right by the stairs going to 15 as they were inside the building and it wasn't what I expected it to look like, losing another 30 seconds. A few other iffy route choices and Hill creamed me by 2 minutes. Still lots of fun, as I love tricky urban sprints. I just need more practice!

Dad and I went to Regis Colleg to practice rough compass in thick terrain. Either the map we were using was off or we are really bad at following rough compass. After trying a few points we gave up since we were missing some by quite a bit. Let's hope it was the map.

Hill, Dad and I went to Prospect Hill to run an old sprint course. We only had one 1:5000 map, so Hill and I shared and did sprint memory-o and dad copied the coure on an old 1:10,000 map. There was one long sprint leg that I had trouble memorizing and had to check the map part of the way through. And it didn't start pouring until we were done!

Sprint at Franklin Park. Arrived fairly late, so just jumped out of the car and started one minute behind Hill. Slowly caught up to her as the sprint went along and had a possible better route around the pond to #6. Close behind her and took a faster route to 9 and got ahead, but then missed the control and she was in front of me again. It was good to have someone else running beside me to focus on my own orienteering.

Ran my red course from this weekend. I had visited all but two of the controls, but I hadn't run most of the legs. I ran hard and fast and enjoyed the time in the woods!

Ross came home from work at a reasonable hour and we ran to the track to run some 400s together.

This time we ran 5 400s in order to one up last week. Ross did suggest that we do 6, but after 4 he thought 5 would be ok.
Times: 71, 75, 75, 78, 77.

Harder than last week and slower too. I think running them in the afternoon instead of in the morning had something to do with that. 2 minutes of rest between each one, except 3 minutes before the last. Felt harder than last week.
