Way of the Roses - Day 2 - Ripon to Bridlington
Stayed in the nicest place overnight, a sort of B&B which also does guided runs. Really pretty, had hundreds of running and cycling books, and the owner was a really interesting guy who'd done a lot of fell running and distance cycling.
Today was...interesting. Another warm day, a hell of a lot flatter. Only one real hill, something like 8km and 3% up to Huggate. It was quite pretty there through the valley, and we passed a lot of people doing a sportive. Today was less scenic on the whole but still really pleasant.
However, I had a bit of a disaster. On the way into York, about 50km into the ride, there was a really long section (~16km) of very dubious cycle path, really narrow and poorly surfaced and busy. It also had a series of cattle-grid sort of bridge sections, with barriers on either side. Being the numpty I am, I took a corner too sharply into one of them and crashed into the barrier (slowly) and managed to snap off my right thumb shifter, making it impossible to change into a harder gear on the back.
We tried one of the only bike shops open in York and while they had some second hand Campag shifters, they didn't have 10 speed, and unfortunately you can't really fix it. So they gave me a pointy screwdriver, which I could wedge into the mechanism to change to the bottom of the block. Knowing the profile, I decided to pick a gear, change up going up the hill, then stop at the top and use the screwdriver to knock it down again.
It worked OK, and I got to the end. But I was often either grinding more than I wanted to or spinning like Froome, and near the end my knee got quite sore. I suspect without these troubles (and the awful bike path / gravel track sections) we could have averaged closer to 30 today!
But, we made it! Yay! And had a well-earned chippy on the beach at the end. Now to rest!
