Red Bull dunedusters race on Stockton dunes.
Walking to assembly was much more like expected with soft sand, and thankfully am exploratory run out from the start suggested that would continue to be the case. I'd pretty heavily taped my toes after yesterday's battering, but figured that'd be no bad thing no matter what the sand was like.
Set off near the front with Andy and kept it steady, trading places and generally running in each other's footprints on the climbs, slowly churning through the crowds who'd raced off, and noticing the km markers were coming up too quickly compared to Garmin. First half seemed pretty comfortable, nothing too big dunewise, just stare at your feet on the climbs and keep hitting footprints to the top.
On the return they hit us with some nastier climbs (and got hit by the wind on the tops), where you're using your hands as much as your legs, and after the final drinks point I started to get a small gap on Andy in a few places then would find him right back behind me on the next climb, but then gradually opened up 30s on the final few climbs to prevent a brutal finish line showdown!
Finished 9th, just under 6 minutes down. Pretty happy with the result, and found I strangely enjoyed it, probably left a little too much in the tank but hard to tell how hard to push when you have no idea what the course has in store for you. Would be keen to do again. Especially when combined with a visit to Murray's brewery.

North end of Stockton dunes trying to get a feel for what was in store for the red bull race, blisters and bloody hard work were the answers - rock hard sand and tough climbs a world away from the Wanda training. Stunning location though, wind made for hard work and little time in the sea afterwards.

Wondabyne to Pindar Cave for another 5 to 9 microadventure. Slog up the hill from the station on nice single track, then a bit of firetrail, then more nice singletrack to Pindar cave with some cracking views. Had a run down to the waterfall to fail to see the sunset.

Hilly Wanda circuit again but with additional short steep climb up to the lookout added after each rep, 7 long & 6 short. Tried barefoot shoes on one rep, just filled with sand quickly.

Warm down back to Cronulla for a swim, just missed the burger joint :(
