West Point Long Distance - Green Y course on the Turkey Mountain map. I was anticipating brutality and the course delivered. But I actually enjoyed it in a sort of masochistic way. I made a mental error enroute to #2 when I looked at the map and started the leg heading for #9 (which was directly on the straight line between 1 and 2 - a course setting no-no). Fortunately, it only cost me a couple of minutes. Had I read the map properly, I would have taken a left-hand route instead of the right-hand option around the swamp. Also turned up the wrong re-entrant heading for #3. I got drawn off by some other runners eventhough I knew I was making a mistake. Ran right across a big black snake in there in a bed of blueberries.

The leg from 6-7 looked murderous on the map but was more runnable than I expected and gave me no problem. Given all the warnings regarding blueberries and low vegetation, conditions were actually a little better than I expected.

Finished the weekend with no injuries though I need to figure out what is going on with my right knee. It has been giving me problems for the past couple months. Hoping it is just some tendonitis.

West Point Middle Distance - Green Y course on the Deep Hollow map. My primary goal for this weekend was to not incur or exacerbate any injuries. I was looking forward to the event as I have not orienteered much since early last fall due to the foot injury (which flared up after last year's West Point event).

I lost 2-3 minutes on #1 after talking myself out of climbing the big hill which knew I was going to have to climb. Thought #2 was hung higher than I expected and lost a bit of time correcting there. Petr caught me here and we ran together untl after #6 when he pulled away. I also missed #7 to the left and had to come back from the trail - maybe a minute or so lost.

So a somewhat sloppy effort. My legs didn't have much giddy-up. Maybe they were a little tired from the vetting yesterday?

West Point Sprint - Green Course on the Camp Natural Bridge map. A better effort than the Middle. I only had one hiccup - misread my control description for #6 and was looking at the base of the cliff instead of for the boulder and went right past the control. About 50 sec lost.

Really liked the variety and the course made maximum use of the area. Fun!

Delaware Water Gap (Stuckey Pond) - Vetting 16 controls for Sandy's June ROGAINE. Decided it would be good to combine this with the trip up to West Point so I hurriedly threw everything in the car and hit the road by 7:30 am to avoid the worst of the rush-hour traffic. I arrived at Stuckey Pond around 10:15 and realized that I had left my clothing bag for the weekend back home on my bed! This senility is not all it's cracked up to be.

I spent 3.5 very enjoyable hours vetting in beautiful woods. The vegetation was not out yet which helped visibility. There are some really spectacular views from several of the hill top controls.

Then I got in the car and drove to West Point where I did some bargain basement shopping to outfit myself for the weekend (including a pair of $14.99 jeans).

We were not in sync on offense tonight and went 2-4 as a result. The losses were close at least.
