To work.
6 PM

Road run 13:21 [2] 0.92 mi (14:30 / mi)

Work to track.

Track 37:23 [5] 2.2 mi (16:59 / mi) +2m 16:57 / mi

A really nice workout. Sam came again, as did Kaspar, Ian Webb, SGB, and Terry. After warming up we did 3x (1000,600,400) with 1 minute rest between the pieces and 200 jog between the sets.

Felt great, pushing hard. SGB is a fast fast animal.

7 AM

Road run 34:47 [0] 4.27 mi (8:09 / mi) +9m 8:06 / mi

To work, getting in early for experiments.

Feeling tired, so took the shuttle home after work.

8 AM

Road run 33:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:15 / mi)

Running to work in the morning. Forgot to charge the Garmin.
6 PM

Road run 23:39 [2] 2.97 mi (7:58 / mi) +11m 7:52 / mi

Running to SGB's for CSU training.

Road run 31:08 [4] 4.34 mi (7:10 / mi) +3m 7:09 / mi

Street-o exercise from SGB's place. It was a line o course, where a route was shown on the street map and all the intersections with other roads were marked as well, but the complete grid of streets was not shown. I ran counterclockwise and Giacomo ran clockwise and we met up at the same time at the end.

A fun exercise, and challenging because the scale was such that things were coming up very early.

Then dinner of pizza and chatting with the crew.
9 PM

Road run 12:24 [0] 1.6 mi (7:45 / mi) +33m 7:17 / mi

Caroline very nicely gave me a ride back into Newton. I had her drop me on Comm Ave and I ran home from there. A nice evening for running, but it was a good idea not to run the whole way back from Somerville.

9 AM

Road run 34:35 [2] 4.01 mi (8:37 / mi) +8m 8:34 / mi

To work. Motivated after a great training camp!
12 PM

Road run (Hills) 39:34 [4] 2.68 mi (14:46 / mi) +134m 12:47 / mi

Snuck out at lunchtime to do some hills. Just plain creeping along though. only got through 4 reps, and all at about 2:20. Monday after a training camp is not a great time for speedy legs.

Not losing sleep over being slower than desired.
6 PM

Road run 23:34 [2] 3.0 mi (7:51 / mi)

Running late to CSU A-meet meeting. A productive meeting and a great dinner with friends too.

7 AM

Road run 48:57 [2] 5.76 mi (8:30 / mi) +31m 8:22 / mi

Into work, just adding a little distance because I had the time, so one lap of the reservoir. got to work early to run an experiment. Kinda nice to be up and out when there isn't much traffic.
4 PM

Road run 1:02:50 [2] 6.24 mi (10:04 / mi) +81m 9:41 / mi

And then home, with another couple laps of the reservoir. I guess things are still a little tired from the big effort on Sunday, but the thing I noticed most was some painful thigh chafing making it hard to run faster :)

Tuesday Mar 22, 2011 #

9 AM

Road run 36:23 [2] 4.35 mi (8:22 / mi) +5m 8:20 / mi

To work. Calves complaining, some tightness.
5 PM

Road run 35:19 [2] 2.07 mi (17:04 / mi) +27m 16:24 / mi

Home to pick up Sam's car. Timed it just right so that we came through the door within a minute of each other.

orienteering 41:01 [1] 3.8 mi (10:48 / mi) +13m 10:41 / mi

Drove to CSU training in Cambridge, set by Lori. I was just bottomed out on energy and just thinking of running a fast training was daunting so I changed gears and used training as a social run and joined my friend Dan for the night. He ran and I jogged a few controls before heading back for dinner at Border Cafe. The course around Cambridge was fun! Was feeling much more alive after the run too, which is always nice.

Monday Mar 21, 2011 #

9 AM

Road run 34:56 [2] 4.11 mi (8:30 / mi) +5m 8:28 / mi

To work. Legs feel pretty good, considering.
6 PM

Road run 1:02:37 [2] 6.84 mi (9:09 / mi) +54m 8:56 / mi

Wow, legs got super tight during the day, and it became pretty uncomfortable to do things like walk down stairs. Just my calves really. On the run home I added a couple of laps of the reservoir in an attempt to work out the kinks.

Note

Sam found this picture in a local news write up of the event today. It's very near the start of the race, you can see me sitting right behind Terry, with pretty high elbows trying to protect my space.

10 AM

Road run 1:15:15 [5] 13.18 mi (5:43 / mi) +109m 5:34 / mi

New Bedford Half Marathon. A really great day weather wise and a result that I can be happy with (75:15, 77th place which is the same placement as last year).

This year I had a plan to be more reasonable at the start and really stuck to that plan with Terry and SGB. Our little CSU trio cruised nicely together almost to the top of the hill at 4 miles and then SGB took off... I was trying to be cautious and SGB looked like he was running really fast so I also took off but more sedately. Calves were a little tight (maybe a jog on Saturday would have loosened things up) and I was finding it hard to mentally push through. Physically the running went very well, and pacing better at the start of the race helped a whole lot. It was windier this year, and that was a bit of a challenge too. Managed to take half a gu at about 7 miles and felt very energized the whole race, just not terribly fast. Splits seemed much more consistent, so that's a real good take-away.

I would normally be thrilled with the time, because it is a PR and because I ran a smart race... but I had a personal goal of 73 minutes and so this is good but I will need to put some more work in to improve my half-marathon time.

SGB ran well, also finding the course to be windy today and Terry finished just behind me in 76 something and I think he was happy with that too. Kevin PRed with 79 something and then Sam had a great race too, very proud of her accomplishment especially since she was running alone.

We also were joined by Brendan, Lori, and Presto who came out and did a run along the race course and cheered us on :) it was great to hear friendly voices at the farthest out section on the course!

Note

Rest Day. Sam and I did some errands, hung out with Hilly, and had Thai Food and movie night with the roommates. One of the errands I did was to mail my big sister a christmas present :) Timely as always!

Road run 33:34 [2] 4.26 mi (7:53 / mi) +4m 7:51 / mi

To the work. Beautiful day.
6 PM

Road run 33:30 [2] 3.94 mi (8:30 / mi) +52m 8:10 / mi

From the work. Still nice out. I weighed myself in the morning and in the evening (the scale is right in front of the bathroom where I change) and over the course of the day I gained two pounds... which makes me wish that I had weighed my lunch.

Road run 31:21 [2] 4.1 mi (7:39 / mi) +4m 7:37 / mi

Woo, another day hitting the lights almost perfectly.
6 PM

Road run 13:48 [2] 1.63 mi (8:28 / mi) +14m 8:15 / mi

To the track.

Track 36:58 intensity: (14:58 @2) + (22:00 @5) 6.8 km (5:26 / km) +2m 5:26 / km

CSU track practice. A fun crowd there today. we started off with another 15 minute session on race psychology, this time focusing on strategies for during competitions. There was a discussion about whether it is better to focus inward or outward during a race and sounds like the studies say that the answer to this question depends on how much racing experience one has.

Anyway, the workout before New Bedford Half Marathon was slower pace with less rest. 1000-1000-800-600-1000-1000-800-600 @ 10k pace. I'm pretty sure that I still did them a little too fast.

3:16 - 3:16 - 2:36 - 1:57 - 3:15 - 3:12 - 2:36 - 1:58

Ran behind Mark and SGB (when SGB arrived) and in front of Terry, Kevin, and Tom, but we all started each interval together. It felt very good. My first run in a new pair of XC flats... I'm trying to wear them in a little before Sunday.

Road run 41:01 [2] 4.45 mi (9:13 / mi) +89m 8:41 / mi

Other than a few more college type people wandering around in a green blaze of glory, the run was pretty normal. It's nice weather for night running.

9 AM

Road run 33:49 [2] 4.25 mi (7:57 / mi) +5m 7:56 / mi

Run to work. Feeling very much blah, like the weather. Things slowly improved over the course of the day. Still, felt like a rest day kind of day, and plus I needed to run a gel for a long time this evening, so I just took a late shuttle home.

Got a call from the doctor's office to confirm that my blood work shows a very slight anemia (this is a repeated test after a test in early Feb showed the same slight anemia) but I was told that it didn't seem worrisome. I'll just check back in June and see if the problem resolves naturally.

9 AM

Road run 30:35 [3] 3.98 mi (7:41 / mi) +5m 7:39 / mi

Feeling inexplicably springy and bound-y. Enjoyed the run into work very much and pushed a little harder than normal for the fun of it (oh, and I was running late too, doing the dishes in the morning makes me late).
5 PM

Road run 21:31 [4] 3.3 mi (6:31 / mi)

Sigh, stuck at work late. Got out just before 6 and ran my absolute hardest to pick up my glasses in Somerville.

Road run 5:44 [4] 0.9 mi (6:22 / mi)

New glasses snagged and another fast jaunt over to Inman Square to catch a ride with Giovanni and Katia over to CSU training. I was 3 minutes late, but Giacomo was 4 minutes late so I wasn't the worst :) Speaking of Giacomo, he needs to get some A-meet days in this spring so he can qualify for JWOC. Anyone from the Boston area going to the Flying Pig??

Road run 54:08 [4] 7.56 mi (7:10 / mi) +196m 6:38 / mi

Magnus set a really great training in his home digs of Arlington. 3 loops in his neighborhood with an emphasis on choosing routes where climb was a factor. He lives on a neat hill with a good grid of streets and he set some very fun courses. I should scan the loops in to illustrate the types of straight up and over vs around and flat legs.

Giovanni, Katia, Giacomo, Wendy(!) and I ran the orienteering ( I guess Magnus got to run before we showed up) and SGB and Lori stopped in to share in the dining festivities. Magnus is a mean cook.

It's very fun to have trainings in new places like Sudbury and Arlington!

Note

Sam bought us tickets to the A-meet in CA in April. Something fun to look forward to! Now I just need to register us for the meet. Other people flying into San Jose and wanting to share a rental car? On that note, Sam is looking for a ride back to LA after the meet... who should we ask about that?
8 AM

Road run 34:07 [2] 4.26 mi (8:01 / mi) +5m 7:59 / mi

oh man, super wiped out this morning. was very surprised when Sam kissed me goodbye, because it didn't feel like 7 in the morning yet. Finally wrenched myself out of bed at 7:30 because the nurse in the next apartment over was urging the resident to get out of bed. Classic good news bad news scenario I guess... she was very insistent.

merely being awake was hard, but running was actually very pleasant.
6 PM

Road run 33:52 [2] 2.58 mi (13:08 / mi) +32m 12:38 / mi

Easy week leading into New Bedford Half Marathon. It inspires great joy to hit the traffic lights more or less perfectly.

Spent part of my lunch break writing emails to potential A-meet sponsors. I am hoping that I get better at this. Practice makes perfect, right?

Skiing 48:23 [2] 3.46 mi (13:59 / mi)

Woah, skiing in butter cream frosting would be just as hard, and my estimation would be that it might be more delicious.

We went skiing at Trapps and Sam and I set out up the hill to meet our friends at the Cabin. I had the beginnings of some sort of illness that was making my nose and head stuffy, plus the skiing was hard, which probably made me less than perfect company on the way up. The snow higher on the hill was nicer and it was all very pretty. We got caught by Katia and Giovanni and then skied with them a little bit until our break time.

missed some of this on the garmin, but this is close enough.

Skiing 1:33:23 [2] 9.28 mi (10:04 / mi)

We had a goal of skiing for another hour so as to bump Sam's weekly mileage, but morale was low (even after a coconut cookie bar) as we set off down the 40 year trail with Brendan and then looped back along foxtracks to telemark. There we meant to cut over on luce to sleighride. Instead, we cut over on luce to haul road and made it most of the way to the top of the hill again before we realized that we had gone the wrong way. Our moods had lightened considerably by this point, so it turned into a fun adventure. We briefly discussed how we should lie on AP and claim that we meant to climb back up the mountain. We skiied up over oslo, then down and back to the lodge.

Skiing 1:05:36 intensity: (55:00 @2) + (10:36 @5) 3.93 mi (16:41 / mi) +101m 15:27 / mi

Skiing at Ole's after a large breakfast (especially by Ross standards that claims any breakfast is a big breakfast). Ed helped me get some new straps on my poles (this was kind of an amusing debacle really) and I used my new wax scraper (again, it's good to have ski friends like Ed and Alex) to finally scrape the wax off my skis from Switzerland.

We were all excited about the idea of the paintball biathlon so we wanted to get warmed up for the skiing. The snow was hard to skate on because each stride you sunk in a variable amount, and the track was quite rutted and uneven which was challenging for those of us with poor balance (the snow has been described as squidgy). Ali gave us some pointers but I was concentrating more on just staying upright and didn't really practice any of the poling rhythm things she was sharing until later in the weekend.

Took a long break over by the shooting range to learn how to aim the guns and to take some film footage of Alex and Ali, and Cliff and Dan. Then the bell tolled for Sam, Ed and I and we took off around the field loop. I wish that skiing was a sport where putting more energy in resulted in more speed out the other side. I hit the backboard on the shooting range all 5 times which I consider a win ( I think they even marked one of them as hitting the plate). Sam was much better at both skiing and shooting, but she wasn't as fast, I managed to edge her by 5 seconds in the adjusted total scoring!

We also watched Eric and Brendan on the course. Brendan was the only one to hit all five targets, so woot woot CSU.

Then we went out to ski on some of the other trails, catching up with Katia and Giovanni and generally working hard.
1 PM

Skiing 1:04:06 [2] 6.93 mi (9:15 / mi) +101m 8:51 / mi

After a lunch break and awards ceremony we went back out to ski some more. The tracks were much nicer and had firmed up a bit. We did some great loops and I was having a really fun time skiing. Sam was probably getting sick of my singing the lyrics to the Sound of Music, but Ali referred to the loop #4 trail as "the sound of music loop" so it was stuck in my head.

Skiing 9:41 [4] 1.57 mi (6:10 / mi) +94m 5:12 / mi

I was still energetic and wanted another shot at the field loop, so Giovanni and I raced around the field one more time. I had a little bit better form and a little bit better snow. A nice way to end the ski day.

Then it was home for banana grams, and a large dinner. good times.

Road run 35:09 [2] 4.26 mi (8:15 / mi) +5m 8:13 / mi

Boo hiss. I choose the one moment of the morning with the worst downpour to run to work. The rain soaked into my coat pocket and managed to assassinate my iTouch. The rain also infiltrated my garmin and left a big puddle in my display screen. so, in the words of my big sister, and as I have already said once before, boo hiss.

legs feel good though. The track workout was good for resetting everything.
5 PM

Road run 30:24 [2] 2.48 mi (12:16 / mi) +31m 11:48 / mi

From the lab to the grocery store where I picked up stuff for a pre-drive salad and stuff to make a large dinner up in VT. waddled home with too many grocery bags, then held everyone else up by still needing to pack :)

Played breakfast combo on the drive up. Alex and Sam guessed my word in 2 tries, but I got Ed's platypus equally fast.

9 AM

Road run 35:08 [2] 4.13 mi (8:30 / mi) +5m 8:28 / mi

Legs still a bit tired I guess. Got to work and found that, of my 10 male mice set into breeding pairs with 2 females each, none of the 20 females were successfully mated with. That's just lazy. Next week I'm going to set them up with another 20 ladies, which just feels like rewarding sloth.
6 PM

Road run 14:35 [2] 1.1 mi (13:16 / mi)

Heading to the track for CSU running practice. Feeling sleepy.

Track 38:51 [5] 5.3 km (7:20 / km) +2m 7:19 / km

After warm up and strides did 800-1200-1000-800-600-400-300-200. SGB was there, which was exciting, and he was running way fast which was motivating. I was pretty happy with the workout, but I struggled through so GI distress and I think that slowed some of my times. On the bright side, my legs feel great now, after the fact, a little speed helps get the soreness out from Tuesday.

Times ( roughly) 2:27 - 3:46 - 3:09 - 2:33 - 1:54 - 73 - 52 - 29 (this was a fun all out sprint after SGB)

Road run 40:59 [2] 4.48 mi (9:09 / mi) +84m 8:39 / mi

Stomach still fragile which turned my commute home into a bit of a plod. By the end of the commute I was feeling way way better and listening to some of my favorite songs helped the mood too (this song contributed to me skiing past the last control at the Balsam's ski-o, as listening to it just me psyched up for skiing fast all the way home). Capped off the evening chatting with mom and then dad while making some very passable risotto out of the remaining mushrooms, shallots, wine, and parmesean from the other recipes picked out for this week. I consider this day a success.

Road run 35:24 [2] 4.17 mi (8:29 / mi) +5m 8:27 / mi

Super sleepy, hard to crawl out of bed and get the day moving. Quads sore from yesterday and that made the run in a slow affair.
5 PM

Road run 33:54 [2] 3.78 mi (8:58 / mi) +56m 8:34 / mi

Trying to pick up the pace on the way home. Sam made turkey burgers for dinner and they smelled delicious from the moment that I walked into the building. I was sorely tempted to walk right past the mailbox and head straight to the food.

To work.
6 PM

Road run 24:44 [2] 3.28 mi (7:32 / mi) +17m 7:25 / mi

I had a groupon for a pair of glasses at Perle Vision, and I looked and found one nearish to CSU training tonight. So I printed out the groupon, spent about 45 minutes looking for my latest eyeglasses prescription in the morning, changed the expiration date on that prescription with a similar looking black pen so as to not have to deal with getting an eye exam, and was ready to go. I wended my way through Cambridge to find the store and was pretty pleased to find it without too much trouble.

Road run 13:33 [2] 1.93 mi (7:01 / mi) +6m 6:57 / mi

It took a little longer to get things sorted at the store, so I was pushing pretty hard to get to Ian's on time for the street-o. I was 5 minutes late but that's pretty much on time for CSU trainings :)

Road run (street-o) 1:03:16 [4] 8.57 mi (7:23 / mi) +101m 7:07 / mi

Fun Street-o with CSU tonight hosted by Ian. Giovanni, Katia, Magnus, Brendan, Lori and Presto, with SGB joining for dinner.

I started out with a poor route to the first couple but did pretty well after I got past the campus-y stuff near Harvard. I caught back up to Giovanni going up the hill at the end of the course and out sprinted him back to the apartment. A fine high speed chase for most of the course in fact, because I saw him just ahead of me at every control from 2 onwards.
10 PM

Road run 55:51 [2] 6.78 mi (8:14 / mi) +105m 7:52 / mi

Was a little cold and a little tired but I knew it would be faster to run home than to take the T, so I took at easy jog home. I think I might have gotten a full 26.2 miles in today, depending on how much of my runs happened before I finally got satellites.

Road run 32:33 [2] 4.09 mi (7:58 / mi) +9m 7:54 / mi

6 PM

Road run 32:00 [2] 4.0 mi (8:00 / mi) +110m 7:22 / mi

After a long day of ELISA at work I was very ready to jet home. My iTouch ran out of batteries just as I was leaving so no techno to guide me home. As I was running through Cleveland Circle I came upon a race walker out training. He was quick! I started asking him question and found out that he used to race with Nike Boston and a club up in Somerville, and since he was wearing an olympic development coat I think he was a pretty good racer in his day. He still walks between 2 and 9 miles each night.

Road run 1:29:06 [2] 8.02 mi (11:07 / mi) +148m 10:30 / mi

A longish run with Sam. Our goal was to stop by Edmand's park and pick up a bunch of night-o flags from early in Feb. However, I hadn't read Alex's log from when she went out and already got them all. so we checked a couple of locations and then just continued on a loop of the Newton Streets. It was a really warm day and I was feeling pretty good. Sam wasn't having as much fun, so we stopped at 90 minutes, though I did insist that we run around to the rear door so as to get 8 miles on the Garmin :)

orienteering 1:43:16 [2] 5.57 mi (18:32 / mi) +190m 16:46 / mi

cool outing proposed by Ian. a group of us, Giacomo, Brendan, Ian, Sam, Jeff, and I met up at High Rock, and ran around the map. I suggested playing follow the leader and so we took turns leading and then everyone else would try to figure out where they were along the route. The map was fun but the snow got to be too much, and we got to the far end of the map and then just turned it into a trail run home.

I wore my headcam, which I will try to post soon. The video is still a little erratic and dizzying so I'm not sure how much people would want to watch it. I think either I turn my head way more than other headcam wearers or my camera is just very sensitive to the motion. The video quality is great whenever we're just standing around talking about the map :)

Road run 35:37 [2] 3.91 mi (9:07 / mi) +58m 8:42 / mi

Home. Running late, and feeling rushed because we were meeting friends for dinner (mmm Thai food) and bowling up in Somerville. Tough to get moving on a Friday evening after a long week at work.

Road run 32:14 [2] 4.25 mi (7:35 / mi) +4m 7:34 / mi

A cold day. Glad my beard is back to protect most of my face. The un-hairy section was windblown and chilled by the time I got to work.

Road run 13:31 [2] 1.23 mi (11:00 / mi)

Zipping off to CSU track session. I heard about this facebook group on Wait Wait, and I sympathize when trying to navigate Coolidge Corner.

Track 38:56 [5] 3.75 mi (10:23 / mi) +1m 10:22 / mi

The first 15 or so minutes of tonight's track practice were devoted to talking about some of the psychological aspects of running. The speaker talked a bit about pre-race mental considerations and we all brainstormed things that can contribute to (bad) stress before a race and we talked about (good) stress before a race, and then we brainstormed coping mechanisms. He summed up the session with a 3 word mnemonic AAA.

Acknowledge - that you are feeling stressed and that you are not "just fine"
Adjust - if you can deal with the stress by changing something, psych yourself up, calm yourself down, put on another layer etc.
Accept - if there is stress that you can't deal with, try to recognize that you'll just have to work though it

An interesting, if somewhat silly presentation, I like the three A's though.

So then group stretching and strides before we moved on to the workout.

Distances: 800-1000-1200-600-600-400-400-400 with 200 jogging rest.
Times: 2:28 - 3:05 - 3:45 - 1:48 - 1:46 - 68 - 68 - 67

Mark was back from injury but SGB was caught up at work so tonight's little pack was Mark, Terry, Tom and me. I was exhausted going into the workout, but as soon as I started running I got re-energized and had a great session. I like it when running feels like that. I was leading the group for the first 3 pieces, but Mark had just been holding back until the speed work and he just blew past on each of the 6's and 4's.

Road run 46:57 [2] 5.51 mi (8:31 / mi) +84m 8:08 / mi

Cool down/ commute home. I added a lap of the reservoir because I wanted to add some mileage this week and because I wanted to see how nice the trail was for running (some sections still very icy) and because once I had decided to go I didn't want to back down, even though I was feeling kind of hungry and tired by the time I got there.

Stopped at the grocery store to pick up more cereal (dinner) and some breakfast foods too :)

Road run 33:08 [2] 4.24 mi (7:49 / mi) +10m 7:45 / mi

Run in to work. You'd think that getting up at 6:30 would allow for me to get my butt out the door before 9 am...
1 PM

Road run 32:19 [3] 4.5 mi (7:11 / mi)

Short run in the middle of the day. Would have liked to go a bit longer, but still catching up with work. Sidewalks are mostly nicely melted and almost warm enough to not need gloves or a coat. Yay spring.

To work. Wore my icebugs because I was going to use them for CSU training in the evening anyway. Mostly unnecessary because there really isn't much ice, but a couple of minutes faster with good traction.
6 PM

Road run 28:49 [2] 3.61 mi (7:59 / mi) +62m 7:35 / mi

Got a ride out to Sudbury with Ed, but was running late so ran the short way home along Rt 9. Not as pleasant a route, but it got me home only a couple of minutes late, which is practically early for CSU stuff :)

Trail run 50:27 [3] 3.15 mi (16:01 / mi) +130m 14:12 / mi

CSU training. Caroline set up a nice trail run with options to go off trail and get controls if desired. However, the snow conditions were not great. Some of the trails were packed down and fine for running, but a lot of them were just crusty on top, and there was a lot of post-holing every 3rd or 4th step. Going off trail was not a good choice. :) ran a bit of the prescribed loop with Magnus, but we turned back when the trail got especially bad.

Unfortunately we weren't supposed to be on the trails at Nobscot after dark, and the park ranger was unhappy that several cars just arrived and most of us were off into the woods before he could come out and tell us to leave. Oops, hope that we didn't give orienteering a bad reputation in their eyes.

Afterward, dinner at Casa Luis was delicious. Roasting bananas is new to me but very very good.
