Happy Thanksgiving!

Today was a full day of teaching. At least I had a good partner in crime. Vero and I taught 5 sets of students about pyrosequencing. It felt like an early morning to get set up and running at 8am and I exported the last sequences at 7:30 pm. The day started out with some bad luck and a bad run where we got no light emission from any of the first samples. We then took fresh reagents and changed the filters on the vacuum probe, some combination of that solved the problem for the next groups. Still, these forensics students should be able to match their suspects to the "crime scene" in the end.

Note

A full day teaching in the lab, then trying to do some work of my own afterward, and finally an evening of board games with our biweekly Imperial Assault game crew. We, the rebels, were crushed again this week. This time, almost literally.

Strength (Rockgympa) 45:00 [3]

Another good crowd. We needed to form an inner circle to get everyone in to fit. We're going to need some more mats (and more Mats?) in order to accommodate everyone. We had 50 again today. A good session. Sweaty and happy at the end.

Trail run 52:01 [3] 9.5 km (5:28 / km) +88m 5:14 / km

Along the river and back over backbana. Pretty similar route to that of the blodomloppet course. Getting a bit dark by the end, but felt very nice to be outside running.

Would have been nice to do Tisdagsbana instead, but this seemed like a better choice for my schedule tonight.

Strength (Rockgympa) 44:00 [3]

Woohoo! 46 people at rockgympa tonight (though I guess Amelie wasn't really doing exercises, more like crawling all over Elisa to make her exercises harder). We have room for more people, but we also don't have quite enough gym mats, even when sharing.

Speaking of mats, we had a Mats Troeng at training tonight. I read somewhere that Mats likes hugs, but by the end of rockgympa I am sweaty enough such that hugging become more harassment than reward.

Played a lot of Innebandy afterward! Very fun, very sweaty!

orienteering 1:14:40 [3] 9.13 km (8:11 / km) +323m 6:57 / km

Sunday training. Another mass start. Once more, unable to keep pace with Tove up the hill to 3.

One very big mistake around control 12, where I think there was just a bit of extra hygge that I didn't really grok properly. In the end I was running along with a bunch of the faster Linné women. I snuck in ahead of Kate and Lisa R but was trounced by Lisa C and Sam.

Probably shouldn't have said "Niklas is going the best way to number 1." We were pretty much alone on the far right route.

Fun to run with some of the best in the world, Tove Alexandersson and Lena Eliasson, though my form is not such that I can keep up with them so well just now.

Got tired as the course went on. Rassmus was walking in his leg brace uphill to 12 faster than me :) I needed to cut a few controls near the end, to get back to the cars in decent time.

Wet and cool in the forest. Stafett training is a lot like solo training once everyone else gets very far ahead. ;)

Note

As a team bonding activity, we split into groups and did some phone orienteering. Hilda, Daniel and I started with the map, and described a short course to our teammates out in the forest with headlamps. Hilda was very good at being direct and clear with her speaking, and I think we were about even with the other teams after one leg.

Then we switched and the three of us were out in the forest and Karna, Ulrika and Sandra were giving us directions. We had one giant mistake where we lost a lot of time because we could not describe properly where we had gone after leaving control 3. Turns out that this was partly a technical issue of the phone and our teammates being unable to hear our explanations very well.

A fun exercise, and indeed good for building up communication skills :)

Note

Did not train today, lack of proper planning and motivation rather than a lack of time.

On the plus side, a fun night playing board games with friends. Imperial Assault is going to be a biweekly occurrence for our group. I choose a wookie character, as I figure that I am the hairiest of our rebel alliance :)

Innebandy 45:00 [3]

Thursday work Innebandy. A fun session, again small sided games. Played on the same team as Eric, Johan, and a woman named Fredrika and we were pretty good. We managed to hold our own until the end when the super elite team just got a streak of quick goals that we couldn't properly repay.

Going to the campus gym every week again is showing me what a season with slightly less training can quickly do to my weight. Currently hanging out at 72kg. Am feeling slightly motivated to bring that back down to the 65 or so it was last year.

Note

I can add a note here, as there was precious little in the form of exercise to report. A long day in the lab, ending with a bunch of time at the confocal microscope. Lots of pictures acquired and episodes of Welcome to Night Vale podcasts consumed.

Strength 44:00 [3]

Rockgympa! Another good crowd of about 40 people tonight. Tough workout and a lot of sweating.

Many people stayed afterward to play a little innebandy! Fun as always!

Trail run 51:00 [3] 10.0 km (5:06 / km)

A lovely morning. I wasn't quite as successful at getting up and moving as Sam was, but I did manage to get a run in between PBS washes on a set of retinas. Headed out without much of a plan, wandered through stadsskogen, into Eriksberg and then looped into HÃ¥gadalen briefly before cutting back directly to the lab.

Brunch afterward was lovely, we even spent a portion of the conversation making a pitch to Thierry that he should start his training log on Attackpoint. Not sure how successful we were.

then an unsatisfying 90 minutes trying to get Sam's ANT stick from the Garmin 910XT working. Not sure which part in the process is failing. Tried two computers, multiple browsers, but in the end did something with Garmin Connect and exporting tcx files...

Lastly, we were invited on an adult playdate by a co-worker who wanted to introduce a couple that just moved to Uppsala to some other people that like to play board games (i.e. us). Martin and Sushma have an astonishing collection of games (I would hazard a guess at about 200) and were warm hosts, good cooks, and lovely company. We played 4 games and I hope it is the start of a good friendship!
