This weekend was supposed to be the Hickory Run Training Weekend. Since I still had my Friday off, I went up to hike around the park a bit so at least I got in an annual visit. (I've been up every year since 2002 except that weird year when we held the event at French Creek.)
I hiked in from Sand Spring Lake up through the back of Camp Daddy Allen thinking it would be a bit bittersweet and kind of peaceful. Instead, with nobody around, the empty camp was super creepy. Almost horror movie levels of eerie. I kept hearing weird sounds. At one point a huge buck jumped up in the forest and I almost had a heart attack. Hopefully we'll all be back next year to enjoy this place *together*.
The trail I intended to take across from the lake apparently no longer exists, so much of this was along the park roads. Afterward, I spent some time snacking by the lake and visited the boulder field. Then I tried to go to Jim Thorpe but there were way too many people around.
