Falling Leaves 5K at Bucks County Horse Park

After tomorrow's meet got cancelled, I wanted something to do so as not to be a total slug this weekend. Almost didn't go as the alarm went off so early. I actually went back to sleep for another hour, but then the cat was walking on me, so I woke up again and decided I could still make it.

Only about 25 people showed up for this race, so I received my first age group prize (2nd place). It was hard to keep moving well without the pack effect, however.

Nice variety and scenery with trails through various woods and fields. Met and talked to some new people, who invited me to train with them, until I told them I live 90 min away.

Judging from my time, Forerunner, and Google maps, I believe the course may have been about .5 km short, though.

O in the Pines - Pineridge North/South Long - Green (F-Green)

Interesting differences in terrain from N to S side.

1 - Up trail, in from bend, easy.

2 - Up trail some more, right fork, along stream. Seemed further in than expected.

3 - East trying to catch trail below the area. Had trouble distinguishing which trails mapped and how. Found boulder, then the one next to the trail. Went NE on trail until small rise, then attacked picking off rocks.

4 - Having trouble distinguishing up and down for some reason. Thought control was on left side of rocky spur, actually on right side of spur above rocky reentrant. Lost a little time bumbling.

5 - Straight, marsh as backstop, but saw rock when dropping down even though this side was covered in ferns and moss and stuff. Man nearby approached from other side, said it didn't look like a rock to him. One case where mapping notes were helpful.

6 - Kept small hill to left, but felt like I was going for a long time. Rock seemed further off to right then I expected.

7 - Looked at that wide expanse of... nothingness, except the unreliable-to-cross trails. And thought about how slow I am in the forest here. Then went back out past 3, down the trail, across the main large trail at the bottom of the map, and back up past 1. Probably ridiculously long, but I knew it was safe and I knew I could move. And then I was counting the pine trees and blew it anyway. Came to the big bend at the top of the trail. Turned and did see both the tree and bag on the way back. Blew it on an easy control with the easy route.

8 - Down trails past 1 yet again, right through the multi-junction, then just climbed the hill to the top.

9 - Still with trails. Back to multi-junction, climbed over little knoll to other side and went along until I saw it.

10 - To multi-junction again and in from there.

11 - Stupid, completely missed reading ride/trail thing, went straight through crap.

12 - Dumb again. Right along ruined fence, through big swamp. Didn't consider that road/house area were fair play, even though not marked out of bounds.

13 - Easy

14 - Stupidly got sucked too close to stream by sound of water, ended up in some of those young pines again, down in the U across from buildings.

15 - Trivial

16 - Took most of my 2 minutes here. Crossed leisurely, had a drink, stretched out a bit, examined last few legs.

17 - Up trails and attacked past other big rocks.

18 - Similar to 10-11 leg yesterday, should have stayed below rocks instead. Hit the other trail, counted marshy stream things, saw control anyway from the bend.

19 - Down, down, down.

And F.
