Flying Pig XVIII - Mounds State Recreation Area Middle - Green (F-Green)

My cleanest and (marginally) fastest day of the three.

Again, felt this course was long for a middle. 4.9 K, to me, is right in the lower end of classic length.

Ran into Rob W around control 3 and for most of the rest of the course. We are close in speed, so even when we would take different routes we seemed to constantly come back together at the control.

Too high on 6, but I knew it was on the nose of the hill, then encountered another course's control which had to be the small reentrant to the N (and it was.) Dropped down and got it.

The only leg I really disliked here was 7 to 8, basically a straight line thrash through green unless you wanted to climb to the trail and drop again. At least most of the green wasn't thorny, but it was bushlike stuff with sticks that would get all intertwined. I wished for a machete.

Chose a somewhat circuitous route to 11, trying to avoid more green.

Slight miss on 13, going along I thought to myself it might be below on the steeper drop of the hill. Started to cross the many ditches and could see the building and clearing ahead, so knew I was too far. Dropped down and turned back and there it was. Enjoyed the more sprint-like ending to the course.

Flying Pig XVIII - Mounds & Garr Hill Long - Green (F-Green)

This course just shredded me, in more ways than one. The length alone would have been okay, but the 300 meters of climb did me in. Add to that the thorns and you have a bloody mess.

I didn't have major navigation problems (with one exception to be noted below), just moving slow. When I crossed through the finish area between 7 and 8, I was ready to be done then. But there still remained another loop. By the end I was making route choices based only on eliminating as much climb as possible. At second to last control, 13, I finally lost all mental ability and floundered about in the woods for a while before coming out to attack a different way. I could identify features on the map but not make sense of them. On finding the control, I must have been very near it the first time. Doh.

Flying Pig XVIII - Bear Creek Scout Reservation Middle - Green (F-Green)

Pretty much all-around pathetic performance this weekend, but these things happen.

We arrived and walked up the hill to packet pickup, only to find out packets weren't ready. Sorry, but this should not be something tossed together at the last minute. Had to wait at least a good 45 minutes, which totally threw off all other preparation. For me, eating lunch within the hour before running is not ideal. (But not eating for several hours before is also not an option.) Then had to hustle and dress.

I thought these courses would be too long as soon as I saw the published lengths, and I was right. I didn't totally get the middle feel here, either.

Crossed hugely swollen creek three times, up to above knees, unable to see bottom in muddy water.

Braindead error on 3, climbed wrong ditch on 5 and encountered the wire fence (easily remedied, but still...) Approaching 9, the saturated soil slid right away beneath my feet and I ended up on my butt in the mud. Entering field to 12, fell and turned my entire left hand into a mud blob. Another braindead error headed to 16, in which I misjudged which side of a building I was on and turned down the wrong trail. (Which I should have realized since I was headed to a place I had already been.)
