King's Gap - Orange

Walked it with Michelle and Whitney. They were taking pictures and videos (yes I have my own personal paparazzi... LOL ) and we were talking and I wasn't really concentrating so much. 1 and 2 were fine. On the way to 3, got pulled off course by seeing another control even though it wasn't the right one. And had I really been paying attention I would have known it was too soon. Ended up wandering in a big circle and finally wound up back at the same wrong control. Saw a few long stumblers on their way through. Re-attacked from original attack point, went all the way through to the other trail without spotting the control. Went in by walking up the reentrant from the road, and found it right away. Gaaaah! While I was going up to get it I heard the girls scream behind me and turns out there was a snake (just a little garter snake)

We went down the long trail to 4, couldn't find the bag right away but it turns out the rocks extended further west than I realized. We went past the scenic vista on the way to 5, passing a couple sitting there who asked where the trail went so I showed them. Down the edge of the rocks into 5, easy. 6 was right in the campground and 7 was just a matter of going from the road down into the little valley. Then it was a long slog back up the hill to finish. A fun course, but pretty climby which was what I heard the most complaining about :-) I am surprised that Michelle and Whitney came along and finished the whole thing with me. Plenty of weird conversation on the course including the Twilight vampire book series, the fact that they still want to marry me off (ha) apparently to any remotely appropriate person they can find so that they can be bridesmaids, a plastic pirate medallion that we found on course and determined was possibly bad luck, politics, and camp songs (many of which were sung on the way to #7)

Myrick Night-O (Vampire Score O)

Got 7 controls. Didn't see any vampires.

Right off the bat, got #17 at the road crossing. Next went up to #3 on the small building, which also had candy, so took a Tootsie Pop for later. Crossed over to 4, spent a lot of time thrashing in the tall weeds, was right where I felt the control should be but could not find it. Later heard that a lot of others did not see it either. Gave up on that and headed to #1. When I got there, that control was not there either. Some boys came along and they were afraid that I was the vampire since I was just hanging out there, but I told them that I was just looking for the bag. They said they had already gotten it further South. And sure enough I went down and found it mishung on the next fence.

Went back up the field, around on the trail to 15, which was really hard to get in to through the scrubby trees and brush. It was annoying that I could see the reflector from the trail, but had to contort my body to get in the few feet to punch. Back out to the big field I went over toward 2, turned off my lamp for awhile because I was just following the forest edge. Saw Tracy and her husband at 2, then I headed all the way out to 16 eating my lollipop on the way. On the way back from there I turned my headlamp off again. I had to turn it back on when I got close to the parking lot and all of a sudden there were about 3 other people running toward me. I never did find out who they were or if they were vampires, I just took off sprinting for the parking lot (safe zone) and outran them. At that point I still had a little time left so I went up the trail and got #18 because I knew where that location was.
