Green Lane - DVOA Long Champs - Green

Good pace, for me, especially for an event this long. The weather was very pleasant and that, combined with a long road/trail run across pretty much the whole map, I think made the course seem much shorter than it really was. It's been 5 years since I ran on this map and I couldn't remember much about what it was like, so I was pretty much pleasantly surprised as I thought it was much greener.

West on the water-side trail toward 1, cutting in at the stone wall and knolls. Actually passed it slightly, even having seen the bag, thinking it wasn't correct, but went back and it was. Straight over to 2, aiming left a little and coming to it along the stream. Went south on the trail and then cut in where it crosses the creek, staying along the north edge of the dark green. Saw 10 below me. Hit the big ditch and went south into 3.

Worked my way out to the road intersection through the flattish bland area, headed along the busy road staying just inside the woods to the North. Picked up the trail when it rose to meet me, went down to where the ditch crosses it, and down the hill to the pit. Out through the "Neptune's Railroad" area that used to creep me out when I was younger (cabin that looks like the Unabomber should live there, weird metal crank thing, and railroad tracks heading into the lake). Along the wide trail, then the fence, out to the road via the small trail near the ruin. Went down the edge of the road and then dropped down to the cliff. (I think I've had this cliff as a control almost every time I've been here.)

Through the fields, crossed the spillway, through the parking lot and into the woods along the edge of the camping area. Right into 6. Crossed the road, picked up the trail from the parking lot and then took the first right, attacked from the bend with the two rocks, no problems. Went out to the trail to the West, took that North across the road, attacked from the bend. Saw Donna in here also doing Green. Hesitated just slightly at bigger rocks before the cluster. North to the trail, around on trails to the ride and went into 9 from there. Back out to the ride and the long trail/road run.

Ran downhill, tiring at the bottom, Wyatt passed me as I was walking. Decided to pick it up. Crossed the road in front of Eddie's car, stupid, wasn't sure it was him and could have gone kersplat. He asked where the start was, I was running hard and out of breath, I am sure my cryptic answer of "reservoir" was not much help (I didn't know how to get back there by car at that point anyhow without much map examination). Pushing hard was able to keep the gap between Wyatt and I from opening, unfortunately I can only run that hard for a very short time but I guess I'm faster than I think I am. He went some other way and I had to go up the hill then but was exhausted. Went into 10 with a crappy plan and it turned out badly. Thought I'd hit the big ditch but must have gone South of it, muddled around in some thick stuff, decided to bail North and actually ended up back at the stream/trail crossing from earlier in the day. At least from there I knew exactly how to get to the control as I had seen it before.

Then just North to the big trail, back across the parking lot to 11, and in to the finish. All in all an enjoyable day and fun course. I was happy with my performance as long courses are not usually my favorite. Also, my new shoes are so much more comfortable than the old ones.
