Orienteering race 1:02:13 [5] 9.04 km (6:53 / km) +240m 6:05 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2013

Compass Sport Cup, Balnagowan, Short Brown
3rd on course behind Roger (59:22) and Patrick (60:25).
Jase just behind meaning FVO had first three Cup runners, would have been all the first four but Fraser mp'd.
FVO safely into the Cup final in October!

Started 1min behind DaveR and he got confused en route to #2 letting me nip past - he had done a hill race on Sat so a bit down on pace.
#5 - long leg, route dodgy and never saw the path option to the left that Fraser took. Lost a minute to Roger.
#8 - should have gone over the knoll or to the right to make it simple, instead went left and ran below the correct re-entrant (looked up it and thought not rocky enough to be mine). Back to it to punch just before DaveR. (-1min 45s, on a 1 min leg....)
#11 - pretty sure the boulder it was on was some way left and uphill from where it should be (-20s)
#12 - longish leg, poor line out of #11 then spurned the path route but sloppy in circle and dropped a bit low (-20s)
#14 - made a right mess of this, crossed path to right of line but extra green ahead convinced me I was in the right place and it was unmapped path along earthwall (to be fair I had just crossed two unmapped paths on this leg). It was mapped and I was in the wrong place. DaveR took his chance to nip past and was long gone when I got there. (-1min 15s).

All okay after that, got Dave back in sight and then he went off line running down the hill to the last, which let me get to the finish a few seconds ahead.

Result looks better than the fitness or the performance - Rog a bit crocked, Patrick not fully racing, Jase hassled and not warmed up, Dave with a hill race in his legs.
Still plenty of work to try and cram in pre-JK.

FVO pre-CSC training from Braemar, on Creag Connich.
Glorious day for a jog to the summit, but then messing about incompetently for a while in fell shoes on the rocky stuff. Sorted myself out to run okay round the last few, and too fine a day not to enjoy it all anyway!

Run round after the others collecting the tapes. More like relocation practice than normal orienteering, kept assuming I knew where I was going and what it looked like near the circle, doesn't quite work like that in the dark!

Up the hill. Hang the first half of the course. Leg it back down from the far end of the area to meet GG and Fanni.

Back up the hill. Had to give my torch to Fanni so onto small backup torch. Up to the top of the course to hang the final tapes.
Little panic when hanging #11 and could see GG's light approaching #10.....luckily had already hung 12/13/14 so managed to hurry up and get the tapes for #15-#18 out in time...
