Orienteering race 53:31 [5] 7.62 km (7:01 / km) +150m 6:24 / km
ahr:145 max:156 shoes: VJ Falcon 2013

Harvester 2014, Winterfold, leg 2
FVO took the men's AND women's trophies :)

Will was right in the race on first leg and handed to me in 3rd, 8mins behind NOC but only 45sec behind SO.
With a posse of 4 teams in the minute or so behind...

I was keen to get away from the chasing torches. Too keen...
Missed #1 (45s) and #2 (1min30) and both times the torches behind were very visibly converging on me....

Pushed on and caught NOC at #6, and immediately was keen to get away. Too keen...
Bounced off track above at #7 (45s) and track below at #8 (-1:30 after some confusion in the unmapped mountain bike tracks too). Led NOC into flag both times as well.

Opened the gap to #9 and on my own after that even with 2 nervous minutes dropped at #10.

Went straight through the terrain to the radio rather than round the tracks, it was fine.
Went straight again from the radio to the last road crossing. The last part of this was anything but fine, got bashed to bits trying to get through without losing too much time. Round maybe a minute quicker but hard to know that from the map.

So a messy run but crucially managed to contain time losses to relatively small amounts, other teams were dropping chunks of time in various places.
The main thing is that it was good enough to get to the changeover with a 3min lead, GG did a great time on long night to turn that into into 13min, and we were away. Marcus-Ross-JonM-Roger all kept it safe and in the end we were well clear, delighted!

It is a long drive from Stirling to Surrey!
Got there a bit past 5pm so we headed to Hombury Hill to stretch our legs pre-Harvester.
Easy loop with Ross and Will, enjoying the sunshine and views from the top.

FVO evening event at Barr Wood, 4.8km course made into great training by a new contour only map from LIDAR data - thanks Jase!

Took it all pretty steady, a little hesitant in places and initially to the wrong flag at #5, but got them all okay until the last one at #14. Never found it!

Most people had to resort to the colour map to find #14 (multiple ridges on the ground and the old map, only one on the new one) but somehow I didn't even manage to do that....

37mins to #13 which was maybe 300m or so from the end. Ross did just under 39, Tessa and Claire were 40.

Loop from home up past the sawmill and to the flagpole on the edge of the escarpment. Stunning views across the mountains, amazing swathes of bluebells to run through on the descent, all very life-affirming :)
