Harvester Relay 2012, Bordon Heaths.
1st place for FVO!
Delighted - not least as at 10am on Saturday morning we were a man down after Tom Ryan dropped out - finding someone able to give up their weekend and travel from Scotland could have been a pretty major problem so very grateful to Trevor for stepping into the breach!

Strategy - me on leg one, then strong through the other night legs with Jase/Duncan/Marcus to repair any damage (!) and hopefully stake out a lead, Jon M and Trevor to seek to protect that through legs five/six and give Roger a suitable lead for last leg.
Worked a treat!

Quite an eventful leg one for me though and relieved to find myself less than 8 mins down at the finish as it could easily have been a lot more.

S-1-2-3-4:
Bit enthusiastic off the start but hit #1 okay, tried to be careful in the little paths and diggings but failed, and lost over a minute at #2, nearly a minute at #3 and 2mins at #4.
2:49 down and 12th at #4

4-5-6-7-8
Pushed on through easier section despite crashing fall at the road crossing. En route to #8 found I had smashed my compass in the fall (the compass replacing the one I smashed at the Scottish which replaced the one I smashed at the British....). Headtorch rattling after fall.....
1:09 down and 4th at #8

8-9-10-11-12
Tried to be very careful in the maze of little paths at #9 but somehow got it wrong, 1.5mins lost. Headtorch fell apart going to #11. Had a spare but took a while to sort things out, 2mins lost. Good from 9-12 apart from that.
3:53 down and 10th at #12

12-13-14-15-16
Tried to be very very very careful in the maze of vehicle tracks through 13/14/15 but defeated by them at #14 and could not sort it without a compass, had to go out and relocate. 3mins lost. Directionally challenged leaving #15. 1min lost.
7:03 down at #16 but up to 5th - lots of people lost in the tank tracks!

16-17-18-19-20-21-22-F
Still moving well and catching glimpses of a torch ahead from time to time. Was catching it but at #19 couldn't find the pit in the long grass in the rough open with scattered trees where there was no clear attackpoint. Got it at the second try but 2mins gone again. Think this was a common problem at this one in the dark! Then #21 was hung too far up the re-entrant imho and I turned the wrong way initially, 40s lost. This let Alan Velecky on a different gaffle catch me and outsprint me for 5th.
7:58 down at the finish in 6th place.

So - smashed compass - broken torch - about 12mins errors plus 2mins fixing torch - relieved to find the damage at the finish wasn't worse....

Jase pulled us up to 2nd less than 3mins down on SLOW, Duncan and Marcus opened up a 15min gap, which Jon/Trevor/Rog pretty much held until the finish. Well worth staying up for!
