Running race 3:40:54 [5] 28.0 km (7:53 / km) +1500m 6:13 / km
shoes: Inov8

Had a go at the Ochil 2000s hill race, pretty epic!

Other than the KIMM/OMM then never really done something like this before so a bit unsure how to approach it - decided a camelbak would be a good idea so bought one on Friday - got on well with it in the race even though I have never used one before.

Decided to start pretty steady - essentially as a warm up as no way was I expending any extra energy warming up beforehand. Pretty much did that, jogged comfortably along the gradual climb on the forest road, then didn't push too hard on the climb up the steep mossy firebreak, very slippery after all the rain. Still pretty steady going up Innerdownie once we were in the open, hadn't expected to walk so much of the ascent.

Passed by Pat and Ben on the firebreak and a minute or so behind them at the first top, gradually pulled them back over the next few tops and passed Ben on the way up Kings Seat, caught Pat at the summit.

Decided to push on up Andrew Gannel and pulled away, pretty much ran all the way from the top of Kings Seat to the top of Ben Ever. Reckoned Ben Ever was half way in distance and well over half way in climb, and wanted to get there in under 2 hours - had to step out in the last twenty seconds to manage it and get there in 1hr 59min 58 secs - or so my watch said, sadly the offical timing says 2 hours and 2 seconds!

Kept going well across the peat hags and up Blairdenon, then down towards Jerah, finally got on the back of a longish line of people I had been able to see ahead for a while. Pretty hopeful of taking the places but then as we got near Jerah I started to get the first twinges of cramp....on the track up from Lossburn reservoir it felt like I was in a long line of broken people all reduced to a walk - it really isn't that steep!

Disappointed with the ascent of Dumyat, got a couple of places but had hoped and expected that I could be strong on the steep climb and pass quite a few people - felt like I could have pushed harder but every time I did then I just got more cramp in my calf so very frustrating.

Just about holding the cramp at bay on the descent until I fell over and cramped up completely, had to stop again lower down with cramp in the other leg and took the rest of the descent in the wood very carefully, didn't fancy cramping on the steep banks, a long way to fall! Luckily the race was quite strung out behind me and I only lost one place on the descent. Loosened up a bit on the road and the final section and passed two people - however I just followed the Dumyat race route as I hadn't realised that the route from the Logie Kirk road was optional and got passed by someone cutting through on the diagonal path through Hermitage Woods - annoying!

Delighted to see the finish and to be under 3hrs 45 - also delighted to be able to sit down. Descent from Dumyat took me over 24 mins - 9 mins longer than in the Dumyat race and probably 5 mins more than it should have - don't think I was alone in struggling at the end somehow!

Running 36:39 [3]
max:156 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Thought I had better jog that mountain stiffness from the weekend out of my legs before the near-death experience scheduled for Saturday.

A day which started with a hangover and was fuelled by junk food and coffee seemed the ideal opportunity.

Felt pretty dire for 20 mins or so but not quite so bad by the end....almost enjoyed it in fact!

Note
(rest day)

Back from the mountains and a day off work to go and watch the first ever cricket one day international between Scotland and England.

For some teams it is the crowd that is their extra man. For Scotland it is the weather, they are now undefeated in their last two big matches at home, against Australia and England.

At least there was some cricket between downpours, plus play was called off early enough for some festival visiting too - so not a wasted day but would have preferred some of that elusive sun and a full day's play!
