First night-o of 2018/19 season, at Stirling Uni.
Big turnout with maybe 45 people in the mass start, straight into control pick butterfly loops on the golf course, torches everywhere!

Decent field out tonight, Jamie S (34mins) won by about a minute from Lewis. I had a decent race with Ben for a while, and at 19 we had got Fanni/Roger/Fraser in sight. Then 19-20 was the long leg and I went to the right of the loch....a bit slower that way and so the final section was solo.

Running okay but had no pace, unsurprisingly as I have done no fast stuff for ages. Need to get an HR chest strap for new watch, the readings from the wrist measurement in the watch are all over the place.

Running warm up/down 15:16 intensity: (13 @1) + (25 @2) + (2:30 @3) + (11:26 @4) + (42 @5) 2.62 km (5:49 / km) +17m 5:38 / km

MWIS answering ‘chance of cloud-free Munro?’ With ‘virtually certain’ and labelling visibility as ‘superb’.
So we were in the clag at the top....

Fun day out though. Being able to do it during the week meant not too crowded up there either :)

Compass Sport Cup Final, Haywood Warren.
Blue Men, 6th place.
Winner Dave Peel 46:59.
No GPS, forgot to start watch.

Knew from the warmup that my legs till had no bounce in them post-Chicago and that this would be painful. Wasn't wrong.

Dave P started 3mins behind and had me in sight at #2 after a horrific miss by me at #1 and troubles at (dodgy) #2 as well. Different routes to #3 and he popped out just ahead before the control. Dave running faster on the flat/down and pulling away, I kept him in sight for a while by persevering up the hills and some judicious corner cutting (which even got me back ahead at #5 but I promptly missed the flag by 15-20s). Finally he was away on the road run to #8, which I missed by maybe 75sec or so then had some hesitancy finding #9 too (-20-30s). Okay from there to the finish and pulled back a little bit of time.
Would have had to run v well to challege Dave and Clive (47mins) but Martin's time in third (50mins) was well within reach. Ben in fifth so points impact not massive luckily.

Overall we were pipped by SYO by 21 points, with BOK a similar distance back in third. Closer than we were projected to get and so we should be pretty happy....but close enough to be tantalising, especially after Dixie pulled his calf in the warmup and could not start.
On another day we might have had another two top ten finishers in attendance (which is basically what was required), but doubtless SYO and BOK could say the same so fair enough - congrats to SYO on their win.

A few days of sloth seem to have dealt with nascent cold post marathon/travel, but this felt terrible!
Heart rate data ia not right, my hip flexor and hamstring far too unhappy to have got my HR up significantly.
Fingers crossed this makes a difference and am much improved by Sunday...

Last day in the USA, and whilst Tom and Paul were downhill mountain biking, we drove off to walk on the Appalachian Trail. Got to the furthest point from the car and the phone went “my dad has broken his collarbone”. So an unplanned run back to the car and an afternoon/evening with the US healthcare system. And hence not actually the last day after all...bonus day of holiday in Connecticut and home overnight Monday night.

Easy does it. Left quad still paying the price of compensating for hamstring throughout Sunday. Toes still suffering. Decent amount of walking each day since has helped though, generally not too bad now. Although I nearly got dropped by MC a couple of times, I think she thought I was joking when I said so. I wasn’t...

Chicago Marathon.
1504th place, 1365th male, 57th V50.

Six weeks ago I could only run the Aberdeen Half in just over 89mins. But I have never run the first half in a marathon in anything except under 90mins....so took a chance and went for it. First part with Ross and Rog before first Rosco then Rog pushed on.
Through halfway in 89:15, caught sight of Rog just before 25k and caught him at 27k. Ran together for a while then he dropped off a little (still only a minute behind at 35k).
Very close to 3hr pace but just outside, maybe a strong last 4K could have got me there but it wasn’t on the cards, and in any case the last 2k turned out to be really pretty grim.
Pleased to sneak 1sec faster than my NYC time from my first marathon in 2009, and particularly to run a much better time than I had any right to expect. Satisfied with it.

Rosco 2:57, Roger 3:09. BQ times all round....

Classic 2/2/2 pre-marathon session In Salt Lake, up and down Creek Canyon on a nice traffic-free tarmac route. Not flat though, felt like the first MP mile was a proper struggle until I came back and realised how much it climbed!

Note

Transit day driving from Moab to Salt Lake City. Plenty of time for a few miles walking round the city centre after arrival...
