Orienteering race 40:57 [4] 5.84 km (7:01 / km) +100m 6:28 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

First FVO night race of the season, Tulliallan.

New area for me and didn't really know what to expect re balance of forest and urban - turned out to be pretty much all proper forest, a few bits of windblow but generally quite like adjacent Devilla (or like Devilla used to be!).

Fairly well up through the first couple but all alone through the first part of the first butterfly loop. Headed off to the eastern part and the second loop - saw Will and Dave Godfree leaving the central control and had the same gaffle as both, got their torches intermittently in sight abut halfway round butterfly and gradually got closer to them when they wobbled a couple of times (helped by Will not having a compass).

Caught them up bashing through the grot to #18 but then went too high just as they found it, only just still in sight on the track to #19 but they both missed and were backtracking as I headed into it. Which just set me up to be convincingly dropped on the last couple of legs through the grounds of the police college!

Enjoyed it - proper forest orienteering and much more tricky/technical/physical than I was expecting. Thanks Louise!

Times - Mark did 34:17, Jegor 35:58, then Will/Dave/me all between 40:30 and 41. Roger pretty close behind us having run pretty much all of it alone.

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2] 3.0 km (8:20 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Warmup jog to start.
Warmdown with Will and Rog, then with Mark, then with Tessa. Tessa's warmdown pace the fastest by some distance!

Night series begins tomorrow!

Hard work. But probably should have made it harder work....

Orienteering race 1:01:01 [4] 8.11 km (7:31 / km) +294m 6:22 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Tinto Twin day event, Dreva and Muckle Muir. Short Brown course.

Decent area, better than expected, although a shame the cattle had churned up the nice pocket of woodland used for the first loop.

Running okay but with no zip and tired on the hills, couldn't run up them all. Hesitant in a few places when the flag was tucked away and I was maybe 15-20m from it, stopped short at #9 when I saw Fi heading back towards me and thought she had overshot, stopped short again at #18 when I reached crag above the correct one and looking down couldn't believe there were any more between me and the road, climbed back up to a wrong control before descending further.

Beaten by Robin Orr again dammit!

Orienteering warm up/down 10:00 [2] 1.5 km (6:40 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Hmmm. An extra hour of sleep no cure for tired legs.

7 PM

Orienteering race 1:02:07 [4] 9.05 km (6:52 / km) +245m 6:03 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

25th anniversary Tinto Twin, night event, Carmichael Estate. Short Brown course.

Varied area, mix of track running, pockets of nice forest, fields, tough rough open and willow crop (rough underfoot and low overhead).

Pretty solid run although missed the track route reversing out of #2, apart from that then just strayed slightly off line a couple of times but corrected quickly. Enjoyed it but probably glad I wasn't on Brown, only 2km further but apparently a lot tougher!

Running warm up/down 15:00 intensity: (5:00 @2) + (10:00 @3) 2.5 km (6:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Jog to start. Futher than I though. Run back to car. Dash back to start.

Running 12:21 [3] 2.04 km (6:03 / km) +42m 5:29 / km
shoes: Brooks Ghost5 Aug 2012

Persuaded myself out of the door and even set my watch ready to warm up then do a reps session.
But instead my torch died when I got to the cottage after 6mins of jogging! Faffed for a bit then found my way home in the dark.
Reps will just have to wait for another day.....

Time for a quick jaunt along the Carse road before work night out - lovely clear night and towards the sunset on the way out, no torch but lit by the (luckily) clear moon on the way back. Pretty dark by the end!

Headtorch run from home with Rog - persuaded each other to add an extra loop up to the quarry and along below the cliffs at the end, made it a much better session!
Almost beautifully judged as Rog's torch ran out of juice with just two/three mins to go (which turned into five as I went the wrong way on the descent into my own back garden, d'oh!)

Orienteering race 1:20:20 [4] 9.4 km (8:33 / km) +448m 6:54 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

SOL at the fantastically named Fairy Knowe and Doon Hill.
Which provided rough tough physical technical proper Scottish orienteering, 6.4km Short Brown course took a while.

A little bit sloppy attacking some of the early controls which meant Martin caught me 2 mins leaving #4, then passed me on the leg to #5 where first I tripped and got tangled on some barbed wire, then stubbornly tried to push through some dark green and eventually had to backtrack when the brambles between the fallen trees got above waist height.....

Lost time on the second longish leg too when the first two attempts at wading the stream were aborted as I couldn't touch the bottom. Also lost time at #13 when I came round the hill a little high, down the wrong spur and thought I had caught Martin back up - unfortunately he was punching #14 not #13! Went okay through the last part and did finally get him back in sight just before the finish. Both well beaten by the top M50 (Bilbo) and top W21 (Linnea) though - I lost time but not nearly enough to get down to the sub-70 that they ran.

Was hearing mixed views beforehand about "some nice parts and some not-so-nice" but enjoyed it apart from the moments where I was actually ensnared in bramble or barbed wire!

shoes: Inov8 Mudroc 2012

Dunblane urban race. Found it very hard work for the first half (maybe not warmed up enough after standing around at start for hours). Got better but all in vain as I had missed out number 8!

Winner Dave Robertson 48mins, then Linnea 49 and Lea 50 - Martin ran 51 high but missed one out too (#23 - missing it probably saved fewer than 10secs!).

SEDS night training at Achray. Loving being out in the terrain, particularly once I had got my brain in gear and started to find the flags a bit better....

Feeling a lot less like I had a cold after it than I did beforehand, all good.

I did.

And then dinner in the Gargunnock Inn. Also very pleasing!

Dropped car at garage and ran home. Felt quite good on the Touch Road but found the uphill on forest road through the FC woodland tough and then really struggled cutting through from road end across to the open above the house. High bracken and windblown and far too muddy for trainers - but even so it shouldn't have been that bad! Off to the Woodhouse for brunch straight after, where large quantities in food in short order helped put things to rights.

Run/splash with Will round the Carse of Lecropt from the uni, then off to the adventure film festival at the MacRobert.

One of us running more strongly than the other. Unfortunately it was the one who did a marathon only 11 days ago.

MacRobert as amazingly uncommercial as ever, low attendance at the festivals must be at least partly because of their minimal promotion of it, then they closed their bar/cafe just before the films finished....

Sounds like I missed a quality FWTN in the cloud at Holyrood Park!

Found ways I didn't know before which make it much better to link between different parts of Stirling, very handy!

Event: UK Cup Final

Note

Out to Whitelees Wind Farm (Europe's largest wind farm apparently) with MC and her mum. Idea was that they would walk and I would go for a run. which would have worked well had I not left my running shoes in Strathaven dammit.

So a pleasant walk instead - lots of the turbines down dead end tracks so looks like a run vs bike challenge using the turbines as controls could be a fun group day out sometime, with say 20 controls to be collected in any order from the visitor centre/cafe, runners can cut across but bikes have to stick to the tracks. Possible of course to do it on a much bigger scale as there are far more turbines that that and the area is about 10 miles across.

I think Clyde had a training session here not long ago but not sure how much the map covers - anyone out there know?

UK Relay League Final, leg one for FVO 2

Relieved that Roger's dodgy calf survived his fitness test/warm-up as I wasn't feeling too great myself - didn't fancy a last minute promotion to the top team!

Got out there into the mudfest and pretty immediately was even more relieved - not only was I struggling to keep up, I was struggling to stay on my feet. Consoled myself as I puntered round by i) the thought that I didn't need to push painfully hard as not in top team and in fact not in a complete team and ii) the thought that Roger and Marcus would be loving the tough terrain....

To win the Relay League, FVO needed to win the race and hope Interlopers didn't make the top five....

Rog did the job on leg one and came back in a lead group of six only 30s off the lead. Interlopers six mins down in tenth....

Marcus ate up the terrain on leg two and came back in a lead of almost two minutes. Interlopers had pulled up to fifth just 18secs ahead of sixth....

Duncan suffered a bit in the mud crossing the steep valleys early on and got caught by Aire and Shuoc, got back to the front but then made a mistake as he tried to run off the front up the final hill, and couldn't quite get back to the first two before the finish. Murray for Interlopers unsurprisingly came through to fourth place, which would always have guaranteed them the UKRL win - so Duncan bringing FVO home in third place today was job done to secure a great second place overall for us :)

So a good day and a surprisingly tough race but with outcome well worth a day trip - prizes of local ale for the podium teams both today and UKRL overall helped too!

Compass Sport Trophy. Thirteen to score.

A possible FVO team of those not there on Sunday as ill/injured/otherwise unavailable for various reasons:
Brown: (three from) Duncan Coombs, Steve Nicholson, Kyle Heron, Stuart Thomson
Blue: Simon Patton, Steve Barrett, Hugh Buchanan
Blue Women: (two from) Rosalind Hussey, Kirsty Bryan-Jones, Janine Inman, Tori Longhurst
Green Men: Dave Coustick, Brian Bullen
Green Women: Abi Longhurst
Light Green Men: Daniel Stansfield, Craig Thomson

Quite a handy team!

Time to start doing some proper training....or at least some training that will allow some proper training.

Out from work to Ballengeich
5 reps up to the cemetery from the carpark (3:04, 3:08, 3:10, 3:13 (oops), 3:08)
Trying to keep it steady but still having to work pretty hard just to get to the top!
An indicator of the work there is to do.
Recovery okay though and felt quite good running back to the car.
