Running warm up/down 13:00 [1] 1.91 km (6:48 / km)
ahr:118 shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

Might not have had a single second of warming up but did at least go and collect the far controls to warm down. Not very strenuous as I had to stop at half of them to cut the cable ties!

Orienteering race 24:05 [5] 4.82 km (5:00 / km) +60m 4:42 / km
ahr:147 max:158 slept:3.5 shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

London Park Race series, race 1, Peckham Rye.

4.15am start this morning so went for a tactical snooze post-meeting and pre-orienteering, which of course ended up with me arriving after the last start time!

So no warmup at all and not feeling too sprightly, all a bit of an effort. Lost 40secs running down the wooded stream/re-entrant at #17 when the control was actually on the fence alongside, not too bad apart from that except where confused by it not being sprint spec map so never knew whether I was allowed to cross fences, or whether I could!

Beaten by Mhairi and Helen Gardner (Helen was on first leg and going the same speed as me in the relay on Sunday too), also behind Ollie and Scott Collier.....

Won by Ed Catmur in 20:57 so not as far off the pace as it felt (splits suggest I got better running-wise). Think I was about 2 mins off third (15th though). Good fun race and decent turnout (90 people) - nice sunny evening and good beer/food to enjoy in the pub garden afterwards too :)

ahr:133 max:145 slept:8.0 weight:77.5kg shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

Directly from work - no bank holiday for us but it was at least warm and sunny. Pretty much stuck to tarmac today as a bit of light relief after the weekend.

Feeling okay (physio/massage this morning doubtless helped) so went through King's Park and some of the alleyways in Torbrex, through to Cambusbarron and back. A little further than intended but will be more than happy to cut another run short later in the week!

Orienteering race 59:05 [4] 7.5 km (7:53 / km) +264m 6:42 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Scottish Relays Mens Open, Drummond Castle, leg one.

Was expecting a fast runnable forest and some parkland so this race was a bit of a surprise. Good area and tough courses - definitely tougher and more physical than expected though!

Race went okay apart from i) stupidly staying in the pack through all the green on the early common leg (3-4 for me) - the green was a lot worse than the map implied and would have been well worth going round, and ii) going up the wrong spur at #13 and almost off the map just after Ben S caught me up, lost 1-2mins.

Never felt like I was going very fast but could see all the people round me that I would expect (Ben, Fraser, Jon Musgrave, Colin, Dave R, Kyle and Will ahead, etc) so presumed it was going okay.

Usual story with the Scottish Relays though - area quite physical which means a wide spread of times, and the classes/courses don't offer enough options for all members of the club. In particular there are no non TD5 courses (not sure what is intended for juniors without a junior relay team) and no short enough courses to cater for older/less fit/less able/beginners (shortest course designed for 35min winning time for Gareth Bryan-Jones or other top M65). Need to pass on some feedback and try and get a few tweaks made to what is offered as this is a problem every year.

Good work by FVO people to win one handicap race (also dq out of first in another), plus silver for the Women Open and bronze for the juniors.

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1] 2.0 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Pre mass start jog and stretches (luckily had time once the start was delayed), post race shuffle with Fraser.

3 PM

Orienteering race 2:03:56 [3] 13.4 km (9:15 / km) +688m 7:22 / km
slept:7.5 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Scottish Champs 2011, Auchingarrich and Mill of Fortune. Finished down among the dead men somewhere (although I guess at least I did finish!).

Not really up for a tough race (bed at 2am not really the ideal preparation either....) and just looking to run round steadily, however wasn't really planning on the large time loss I managed through #1(oops it is not 1:15,000), #2 (hilarious inability to go in the intended direction at any point) and #3 (distance judgement still more like it was 1:15,000).

Ben (4mins) and Jase (8mins) both long past me by #2 although I did see Jase ahead of me at #5 and #7. Continued trogging round although pretty slow in the rough stuff on Mill of Fortune. Looked at my watch at #18 and horrified to see how long I had been out for......promptly forgot all about navigation and climbed to the wrong ridge at #19 and then far too early at #20.

I guess the best that could be said is that I was looking for a long run today and that there was no need to do any extra afterwards to get the extra time in.....

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.5 km (10:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

To the bus and then to the start. Met Tullster ('it is brutal'), Rosco (cut M21S short) and then Doug ('Cath hated it'). Encouraging feedback!

Never quite got round to the planned easy run. The weather was not making it very tempting!

Running warm up/down 4:19 [2] 0.74 km (5:50 / km) +16m 5:16 / km

Short warm up jog with Ross, arrived a bit late (shock horror) to do any more.

Orienteering 37:01 [4] 5.98 km (6:11 / km) +168m 5:26 / km
ahr:135 max:149 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Evening event at Plean, meant to be tempo-ish effort but managed to sabotage that a bit by standing around for a while before finding #3, then thinking I was at #4 and heading off diagonally up the hill in search of #5, where I faffed for quite a while longer whilst relocating a surprising distance from #5. It was only at the finish that I understood the problem to be that I had never visited #4.....

Orienteering 19:58 [3] 2.63 km (7:36 / km) +87m 6:31 / km
ahr:119 max:134 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Control collection. Realised why during the course I thought I was at #4 when actually at #3.....the circle for #3 was pretty much totally washed off my map!
Time to stop using biro for these events and buy some new waterproof pens - or else for the events to start using pre-marked maps....

ahr:130 max:144 slept:7.0 shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

From the uni with Ross and Fi, good loop through Hermitage and Mine Woods (stopped for a chat with Brian and Heike who were climbing in the quarry), then along to the Darn Path and back through BoA to the uni. Moving along fairly easily although with some clambering over and round fallen trees and branches and some slithering through mud.

Ross and Fi were only doing approx an hour so stopped at the uni - I added on a further loop round the outside of the campus to get the time up over 100 mins. Still going okay at the end.

Note
weight:78.5kg

And so it begins....18 weeks of preparation for Berlin starts here.

Thanks to being ill in early May I am not starting from quite where I had hoped (low mileage few weeks with as many days off in May already as in March and April combined), but I think I am still in okay shape to start from and I am at least going into the training well rested!

Learning from last time, I have booked a few preventative physio/massage trips to get hip flexors/ITBs/lower back etc loosened off (plus deal with anything else that may be wrong with me by then!).

I do have a few other niggles but nothing too bad, just need to keep looking after my calves and left plantar fascia in particular.

Weight (currently 78.5kg) needs to come down a bit by September....

Accommodation for our Berlin posse is all booked.

So now I just need to run the miles and sessions needed to give myself a good chance of breaking 3 hours......I am looking forward to it, I think!

7 PM

Running 1:04:07 [3] 12.85 km (4:59 / km) +140m 4:44 / km
ahr:132 max:148 shoes: Brooks Ghost

Given the wild day then more than happy for Rosco to talk me into a run from his house rather than my original plan of a loop up via Sheriffmuir Inn.

Did a good loop Riverside-Cambuskenneth-Uni-BoA-Cornton-Causewayhead-home, quite a bit of slaloming through the fallen branches to be done in places, plus I haven't needed to run in a jacket for a while!

Moving at a decent pace (when there wasn't windblow in the way), well rewarded as Fi had cooked up a feast for our return :)

(rest day)

Left Kilve at 0730. Drove to Holme Fell in time for the finishers in the selection race. Selection meeting until dusk. Home just before midnight. Another day with no run and feeling v stiff from a lot of driving this weekend.

Pre-breakfast run from Kilve, down to the coast, along the clifftop and then found a handy footpath not on my map which got me back when planned rather than much later.

Note
(rest day)

Early start for train from Sheffield to London, finally back home in the evening. Fell asleep on the flight. It was raining when I got home. This week has long been in the diary as 'do whatever running you feel like' week. And I felt like doing nothing - which was successfully accomplished!

Orienteering race 34:26 [5] 5.4 km (6:23 / km) +170m 5:31 / km
ahr:149 max:161 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

British Relays 2011, M40+
FVO crossed the line first but mis-punched on first leg.
I did first leg.
Pretty devastated.

Got to the front early and running with Martin W for SYO (different gaffles). Wobbled 45s at 7 and the next men plus  lead women caught up, wobbled again at 10 and went to wrong control but saw mine behind me and again 45s lost. Got in the lead again with Martin just behind heading over the footbridge to 16 and then the spectator, longer gaffle one before the spectator saw me through 20s or so down and in 4th. Could see the others and let their control distract me to 19 where I missed badly. Finally back in 4th around 80secs down which seemed like not disaster although not quite what it should have been.

So so horrified at download to find that the control I punched after my miss at 10 wasn't mine after all, I even saw it was code 94 but somehow thought that was right when actually I needed 93. No excuse.

No fun at all telling Jase the bad news after I finished.
Ben did the job on leg two and came back in second right behind Charlie Adams. No fun telling him either.
Very mixed feelings watching Jase run an awesome time on the last leg and come back ahead of Bill Edwards for what would have been a fantastic win.

Thanks to Ben and Jase who both took the bad news well - really sorry to let them both down like that and deprive them of the win that their race deserved.

Orienteering 15:00 [3] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Warm up trying to get enough flexibility to run.

Sent to warm down by Jase, not sure whether he could see I needed a little bit of time to deal with things or just wanted me out of his sight...

Orienteering race 1:18:35 [5] 11.72 km (6:42 / km) +450m 5:38 / km
ahr:148 max:165 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

British Champs Long 2011, M40L, 3rd place.

I guess a championship race is ultimately about position. I thought before the race that I had an outside chance of a top 3 finish. And in the end I was indeed on the podium in 3rd, which I am delighted with.

It is a lot harder to be delighted with my performance though, nothing like the performance i thought would be needed for a top finish. Shaky at 1&2, felt like i was into it through 3&4 but got confused on the way to 5 (never got a grip on the path/ride mapping in the Greno section) and when i did relocate ran to #8 not #5 by mistake. Saw Ben punching and realised. More time gone at 7 and coming back to 8, all adding up to a terrible start losing more than 6 mins by control 8. Probably helped that i knew i was only a minute longer than Ben to 8 so didn't realise quite how much time i had lost. Improved briefly but problems at 13&14 cost another minute, then a miss at the end of the long leg to 15 (plus perhaps also my route?) meant another 2 mins or so gone. There were positives too though as from 15 I ran the final half hour really well and pushed hard with fastest splits on the two longest legs in that section. I was in 8th at #15 and more than 5 mins off a top 3, so the final section was good for me!

Bill won in just under 70mins, Rich Barrett was second in 72mins, then I sneaked into third at the head of a little group - me 78mins then Neil C, Ben and Andy M all on 79mins and Jase on 81mins.

Running warm up/down 35:00 [2] 4.0 km (8:45 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Good warm-up to the start arriving in good time for drills and stretches. Feeling better than at any time in past two weeks and ready to race.

Decent warm down shuffle with Ben.

Note
(rest day)

Legs really quite heavy and tight from yesterday's not-at-all strenuous session. Cold still lingering too dammit.

However, I do believe it is the National Championships tomorrow. Looking forward to feeling great when I wake up tomorrow....

Running 36:43 intensity: (32:13 @3) + (4:30 @4) 6.96 km (5:17 / km) +162m 4:44 / km
ahr:130 max:146 shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

Round Leckie again. Cold almost gone now and hoping to feel quite bouncy but instead just felt totally lacking in rhythm. When I got to the top of the track did 2x45sec at a good pace with 45sec in between, and then did that twice more on the way back with 90sec between each pair. Running at a decent pace didn't feel much harder and felt a little more rhythmical, not sure the pace was quite what it should have been though....

Settled for the rest day rather than the 20 mile threshold run.....

Orienteering 45:58 [3] 6.05 km (7:36 / km) +209m 6:29 / km
ahr:132 max:148 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Decided I was on the mend (helped by crying off the trip to London today) and gave the FVO evening event at Barr Wood a go. Just ran steady but feeling okay in the legs, glutes and ITBs v tight though. Felt better for going out, pretty hopeful now that I will be back fighting fit by Saturday.

Excellent planning tonight too....

Running 18:15 [3] 2.28 km (8:00 / km) +59m 7:05 / km
ahr:117 max:132 shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Collected a few flags with an extra jaunt across to the open farmland as I remembered I still had the start cane from March's night race to pick up! Luckily it was still there and unscathed, obviously not to the taste of the cattle loitering nearby.

Running 37:28 [3] 6.97 km (5:23 / km) +168m 4:48 / km
ahr:130 max:156 shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

Waited out all the nasty rain and headed out in the beautiful evening sunshine. Still feeling a bit lethargic and bunged up but much better.

For the first ten mins or so my legs and muscles felt like they had spent the last four or five days doing nothing but sit around and stiffen up.......improved a bit after that and running became a bit less of an effort.

Could tell I wasn't 100% but heart rate and perceived effort level both felt okay, just need to shift the rest of the stuff off my chest before next weekend now.

Could do with a forest session and some reps/strides before Saturday. Could do without planned London trip on Wednesday!

Gutted I am down south and missing the Dumyat hill race tonight.
Good luck to all those FVO folk (and other APers) who are fortunate enough to be racing - conditions this year are PB-tastic I reckon.....

Note
(sick) (rest day)

So running last night wasn't such a good idea. Nor was getting up at 0430 for a flight. Very sore throat and generally feeling like death warmed up today.

8 PM

Running 37:53 [3] 6.98 km (5:26 / km) +234m 4:39 / km
shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

Decided not to go out as my left foot has got more and more sore in the past ten days (sore enough to wake me up twice during Sunday night) plus have a bit of a sore throat.

But from the kitchen at home the view of the mountain skyline against the soon-to-be-setting sun was just too tempting so I headed out for a (surprisingly easy-feeling) run round Leckie.

For some reason I did however feel like I had just eaten about half a litre of ice cream.......

Running 55:15 [3] 8.32 km (6:38 / km) +276m 5:42 / km
ahr:121 max:140 shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

Got to the outskirts of Larne with time to spare before my ferry, so had time to head a couple of miles uphill on the Ballymena road looking for somewhere to go running. Found the Ulster Way crossing the road at the forest, so followed it out onto the fell where it joins the Antrim Hills Way. Convenient!

Ideal for a pleasant out and back - another gorgeous day and could see down past Belfast and to where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea.

ahr:122 max:143 shoes: 2010 Inov8 Roclite

Irish Champs 2011, long distance, M21E.

I entered this as I thought it was time I did some longer runs in readiness for marathon training. It did not disappoint and I even added on some extra distance.....

A bit worried about surviving the whole thing after not really any long runs for ages, so thought I would look to run steadily rather than try to race and see what happened. I should have realised that when I 'run steadily' I usually navigate abysmally! Trotted through the first two but with v heavy legs, decided to run along the slope to #3 and then cut through the main col to the control - sighted the col in the distance and decided to get into the running by just keeping going until I got there, pick up the navigation from that point. So it was a shame that I had sighted the col one further along the ridge from the correct one - I thought it took a while to get there!

So a painfully large error at #3 and into survival/jog mode thereafter, made a few more errors though and in particular couldn't find #19 for ages, not really sure why. Quite enjoyed the jog round and felt like I had got my value for money today :)

Running warm up/down 12:00 [3] 1.7 km (7:04 / km) +50m 6:09 / km
shoes: 2010 Inov8 Roclite

Run to the start. Quite uphill. Didn't feel the need to warm down....
