JOK Chasing Sprint day.

Culmination of a lot of work and scheming, who would have thought creating two hours of live TV orienteering would be more work than staging a normal event....

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m0006bj6/the...

A few stresses through the event but generally very happy with how it went, a great arena and fantastic weather were pretty handy for the staging in front of the cameras. Enjoyed watching the programme back in the morning, always room for improvement of course and it was a shame they chose not to use the tracking live or as a replay (especially when the men’s leaders went different ways in the off-camera forest section), but maybe that is something to improve for next time....

Putting out and collecting at Bo'ness for Sprint Scotland Race 3. People took different routes and there was lots of discussion about what was best. So that was good.

Jukola leg 2, 10.4km
Team FVO finished 364th which we were pretty happy with, looks like 1933 teams started.

My run was pretty patchy, did some bits nicely but some other things were not so clever with some bad decision making turning small errors or dodgy routes into bigger errors, twice distracted from doing the right thing by a big train of torches becoming visible near the end of the leg. No reason for that to be my gaffle either time but let it put me off both times.

Pre-race we thought sub 10min/km in this terrain in the dark would be okay and I did at least manage that, however 10-15mins faster was very achievable with some calmer orienteering.

Great terrain this year, properly tricky in places and some controls were total carnage with confused people everywhere. I really should learn my numbers in Finnish though....

Routegadget. Haven't figured out how to link to the actual route, think names on each leg are ordered by eventual finish position overall.

Jukola training map, Kisapirtti. I was pretty bad even when I slowed right down. Thought it was pretty green and rough. A bit of aggression and adrenaline hopefully make a big difference to speed of progress.

From camp at Bealach Bhearnais, up over Beinn Tharsuinn and then steep ascent of Bidein a’ Choire Sheasgaich (steep climb but cool mountain!) and then along the ridge to the higher Lurg Mhor.

Back from the col between the two, down and then a big contouring route right round the flank of Beinn Tharsuinn. Worked well, avoided a lot of climb and prob 30min quicker.

Mountain walking 2:06:41 intensity: (1:05:20 @1) + (52:49 @2) + (2:22 @3) + (3:40 @4) + (2:30 @5) 8.9 km (14:14 / km) +69m 13:42 / km

Glen Brittle to Sgurr Dubh Mor and back.
Dropped JQ, Tim, and Ben at Elgol. They got the boat up to Loch Coruisk and ascended via the Slabs Route, Pat and I drove round to Glen Brittle and ascended from there to the bealach just before the summit, where we met the others. A bit more scrambling to get to the bealach than anticipated but nice to have the assistance of the others for our own final scramble up to the Munro summit!

Then all back down our ascent route to the car. Just at the accommodation in Lochcarron now at 11pm. Good day.

Trotternish Ridge Race
Epic day out with the whole ridge in thick clag with 10-20m visibility. Lots of nav required. Managed to do most of it okay and take advantage of all the troubles others were having up there, no real idea where I was in the race (maybe about 25th early on) so was surprised and pleased to find myself 8th at the finish :)

Only 52 starters (race limit/entries was 75) and 44 finishers. Jase 15th 4hrs17, Gary 21st 4hrs29.
