Running 2:15:47 [3] 23.11 km (5:53 / km) +449m 5:21 / km
shoes: Brooks Ghost 2011

My leg of the http://www.endurancelife.com/realrelay, took over from Rosco in Plean and handed to John Stevenson in Cumbernauld.

Got quite into it beforehand by intercepting Ross at various Stirling historic sites for photo opportunities, and really enjoyed my leg - really enjoyed planning a route beforehand too and coming up with something that was not just a run along main roads.

Thanks to Elle and MC in particular for being fab supporters and meeting me multiple times along the way, and even running a little bit along the Antonine Wall with me.

Took over from Ross at the War Memorial in Plean and headed through Plean Country Park and past the ruined old estate house, across to cross the River Carron and then motorway at Dunipace/Denny, and down between Little Denny and Drumbowie reservoirs for a fleeting visit to the Forth/Clyde canal and then a fun if muddy section along the Antonine Wall (next to the aviation hub that is Cumbernauld Airport!).

From there tracked down the historic Roman altar that is the Carrick Stone (in the midst of a new housing estate and next to one of Scotland's less dramatic trig points). Through Cumbernauld Community Park and then (with only one navigation fail..) found my way through the multiple walkways and footbridges of Cumbernauld to hand over to John.

Quite a few stops for various reasons - quite ready to stop for the final time by the end! A great morning's outing in support of a great idea - just sorry I had to go to work afterwards....

FVO WEE at Gartmorn Dam

I think this is by some distance the most pleasant run I have had round this area - course had quite a lot of easy track running but I took every opportunity to run through terrain and it was pleasingly free of nettles and brambles! One moment of muppetry which cost a minute or so but okay apart from that and enjoyed my run round.

Jukola 2012, Leg 3 for Nope Team Banter, long night 14.1km.
Took over in 382nd after good work from Ben and Brooner but plummeted all the way down to 608th. The rest of the team salvaged 445th place but we were nearly an hour off the target 300th place - probably at least half that time should have been saved by me....
A shocking 1057/1578 on the leg.

In retrospect my preparation for this was asking for trouble...
- very late night Thursday and up at 4am for a flight
- late night Friday and up at 5am for a flight
- not enough focus on sleep when I did get to Finland, only 2hrs snooze before running at 2am.

Thought I felt okay although a little sluggish warming up and running the 1km to the start kite, however I just never had the concentration or focus needed, looking back at the map afterwards my plans for legs are characterised by vagueness, plus I seemed to think that finding the circle would be enough rather than navigating all the way to the flag.

Three very horrid legs costing 7/8 mins each - at #1 (ffs), #7 and #14. A lot of other pratting about costing 30s-2mins each time (in particular at #2, #10, #11, #17, #19).

Pretty sure I can orienteer a lot better than that.
Pretty bad to run that badly in a relay - sorry team!
Pretty clear another trip to Jukola is needed in the near future.

Orienteering 37:50 [2] 3.32 km (11:24 / km) +150m 9:18 / km
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Decided best use of time was to go out on the model map and then sleep rather than just sleep (hmmm) - only intended to do a few controls but took a while to get legs moving after the last couple of days so went to all bar one of them in the end.

FVO WEE at Falkirk Wheel - delighted we have mapped this and it was even better than I expected, great area for middle race.

Minimal warmup and sore from football so ran steady to #1 and missed it right (plus it was in the wrong place!). Then too soft to run through the nettles to #2 and faffed for ages finding a way through. Just took it steady after that and had a bit of fun running behind Al Dunlop, going a bit slower but choosing slightly better lines so I didn't get left behind. Got caught up by Rosco and Jack Baker so thought I should speed up a little and not get dropped by them - helped by Rosco missing the pit on the ridge and having to overtake again....

Enjoyed it - cheers Will.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [3] 2.0 km (7:30 / km)
shoes: Inov8 Mudroc 2012

Little bit of control collection with Rosco.

Football ((plus other nonsense)) 15:00 [1]

A bit of team nonsense at work event - some six-a-side football followed by some lightweight javelin/discus, some wellie whanging, and some space hopper/sack/egg-and-spoon racing.

Haven't played football for a while and my muscles are now pointing that out...

Loop round Touch with Dave P including a visit to the trig point (that bit of forest at least is still standing). Neither of us feeling the need to raise the pace above nice and steady!

Stopped off on the way home for coffee at Glenshee - so seemed a shame not to go round Carn Aosda, Carn a' Gheoidh and (first new Munro for me this week) The Cairnwell.

From the cottage in Braemar up onto the relay area. First part with MC and then did three ascents to the summit (about 7 mins each), revisiting the scene of the route choice crime from Sunday as part of my loop back at the end of each descent.

Scottish Relays, Creag Chonnich
Leg 2 on a team with Simon P and Fraser.
Simon came back near the front of the handicap teams and set me off chasing Graeme approx 1.5mins and knowing that Dixie (taking over from Rog and handing to Ben) would be close behind (again it was about 1.5mins in fact).

Started well and by #8 had taken a few seconds from Graeme and a minute from Dixie. Then shelled 30secs at #9 and rushed into horrible route selection and execution for #11 which cost another 1min 45sec. Saw Dixie behind at #12 and then got confused at crossing point which let him sneak past. Three mins slower than fastest on leg (Quentin). Not so clever.

Scottish Championships M45L, 5th place.
A long way behind Charlie (69mins).

Not enough warm up and struggling a bit physically early on (brutal climb off the start didn't help) but got into it after the big climb to #6. Ran strongly back over the top to #9 but then binned 2.5mins looking for the flag in the felled stuff, checked out some unmapped contour shape off to the west. Pushed after that and then fell over and broke compass. The new compass I bought to replace the one I broke at the British. Ho hum.

Running warm up/down 15:00 [2] 1.0 km (15:00 / km)
shoes: VJ Falcon 2011

Run to start and stretching. Needed to do more than ten mins running beforehand to be ready for a course that physical.
