Stretching 10:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Morning stretching, this was more like it, fashionably late.

Running 22:29 [3] 5.0 km (4:30 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Morning run, set off with Rosco and we agreed that we would be taking it easier than the day before.

Then in the first kilometre a succession of annoying kids with headphones came past at high speed.......then they didn't really pull away.......then when we caught the first of them up again he speeded up and wouldn't let us past...........so we speeded up a bit, passed them all by the 2km mark. and disappeared off ahead for the rest of the run. Very mature of us I thought.

Somehow this run was slower than the day before for me but quicker for Rosco, a tactical error by me on the timing somewhere I feel....

Pilates 1:00:00 [1]

9am straight after morning run, well ready for brekkie by the end of it.

Egg throwing 5:00 [1]

Last year's dream team were reunited with the same diplomatastic end result. We could have been threatened by the last starters from "do you d'liver" but as it turned out, we were infinitely better than them......

Bolas 45:00 [1]

High stress high expectations high intensity high heart rate high blood pressure bolas tournament, again with Elle after we lost to the Germans in the semi-final last year, never a good way for an Englishman to lose.

Round robin tournament not a knockout this year. Just as well. We lost our first match. We were 3-0 down in our second match. Then we came up with some dastardly tactics to save the day and never looked back, a glorious triumph at last - high time!

Stretching 1:00:00 [1]

Stretch and relax class, the perfect build up to the next activity.....

Rowing (Concept II) 7:46 [5]

...the Club La Santa 2km Rowing Challenge!

Only five entrants - me, Rosco, Lard, Elle and James. The inevitable ridiculous starting speed saw Lard fall in and drown after just 200m. I was the early leader but was about to lose my lead when I came off the seat anyway. Janine and then Andy Mitchell took over from Lard. Rosco was leading but being chased by James. Then I thought I would catch James. Then he put on a spurt at the end so I didn't. But Rosco had it covered and took the win. And Andy came from nowhere to beat both James and me, dammit!

Tough work rowing that hard with technique that bad, sore afterwards!

Note

Watched Gerard's Amazing Magic in the square in the evening. It was amazing. We liked it.

Stretching 15:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Morning stretching, made it again!

Running 21:59 [4] 5.0 km (4:24 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Morning run again, after gentle first kilometre Rosco semed pretty keen to stride out and I was feeling pretty good too so joined him, felt in a much better rhythym running today.

Fitball 1:00:00 [2]

Generally better at this than last year, did have a little trouble in the middle during the pairs exercices, Penny and Elspeth were leading the way with the synchronised giggling and it was every so slightly infectious....

Yoga 1:00:00 [1]

Stayed out after fitball and did the yoga class that followed, got quite into it and liked the guy's sense of humour, almost fell asleep good and proper in the relaxation at the end.

Mountain biking 1:40:00 [3]

Went out for a "gentle" MTB session with Lard, Skyhigh, Rosco and Elle. I really am rubbish at this when it gets too narrow or too bumpy and Lard certainly found some stuff like that to take us over. Luckily Rosco is not much better at it than me and so I didn't get left behind.

Got more competent at it as we went on and enjoyed the ride, some great views and scenery at the coast and some nice sandy tracks to descend in amongst all the rocky stuff. As well as getting out more on my road bike, maybe I should buy a mountain bike....

Body toning 1:00:00 [4]

Found some of this hard work, there was one exercise in there which was a total killer for the ITBs, plus I am a pathetic puny weakling so struggled with the tricky exercises which involve holding a bar up or outwards for any length of time - I am much better at propping one up!

Friday Nov 28, 2008 #

Stretching 15:00 [1]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Last year I stayed in bed until the very last moment before the morning run each day - this year a combination of i) ankle and achilles ailments needing to be warmed up and ii) nagging from Toni O'D meant that I paid an inaugural visit to the poolside stretching at 8am.

Even the simple co-ordination required for some of the stretching was a little beyond me but at least I could see James W struggling with it too!

Running 23:50 [3] 5.0 km (4:46 / km)
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Morning run with the 5k group, might have gone a little slower but there was some keen 50ish Danish woman doing it and my ego was obviously too fragile to allow her to finish ahead of me....

Road biking 2:33:00 [3] 60.0 km (2:33 / km)

Out on the road bikes with Skyhigh, Rosco, Andy S and Dave C. Really enjoyed this, some great fun speedy descents (scary stray dogs apart) and couldn't restrain myself from pushing the pace a bit on the climb from Yaiza to Timanfaya, felt good.

A few stops to read the map and decide route etc but mostly going at a good pace. To borrow a phrase I use every year on my return, I really must get out on my road bike at home more often......

Note

6 holes of mini-golf with MC, Dave C and Lard. Manage to salvage the situation on the sixth and final hole to avoid a disastrous defeat....

Pilates 1:00:00 [2]

Class started at 5pm and there was a chilly old wind, it was freezing by the end, MC was virtually blue with cold!

Thursday Nov 27, 2008 #

Spinning 45:00 [4]

D-Day....or rather CLS-Day.....at last.

Always important to start a holiday well rested so finished packing around 3am and started the posse-gathering drive at 6am. Remembered to pack lots of ibuprofen as my ankle was looking rather larger than it should.

Got to La Santa in good time to settle in with a lovely ridge run. Except I couldn't do it of course. Went to a spinning class instead, have never been to one before. Found it a bit dull to be honest although apparently the classes later in the week were a bit more vibrant, should give it another chance sometime.

Great to be back at CLS though, and great to see the sun!!

Wednesday Nov 26, 2008 #

Note

This time tomorrow I will be in a cramped seat on an almost bust (i hope still only almost!) charter airline with an over-priced under-flavoured meal watching a trashy film that did badly at the box office.

Can't wait!

Running warm up/down 3:00 [3]
shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

Abandoned tasks undone at work and dashed up to night race, Rosco was similarly late and so we legged it to the start together, got in sight just as the posse all set off....

Orienteering 9:00 [3] ****
spiked:1/4c (injured) shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

......so started behind the rest and set off briskly up the hill in pursuit. Spotted there was some gaffling. Spotted the first few people running off from the area of #1. Failed to spot that Jack and Abi and Hazel and some others had all headed to #5 not #1 so went there too.

Back to #1 and then back past #5 even though it was nowhere near the route to #2. Nice running across the golf course to #2 although shouldn't have been approaching from that direction. #3 was on a fence corner so managed to find it. Approached #4 and saw Abi leaving, couldn't see the flag so went to second crag, came back to find and somehow to catch Rosco up at the same time.

Headed off towards #5 (again!) contouring across the slope. Turned my ankle, stumbled, turned it much worse. Eventually jogged on for 20secs but it was getting worse not better, prefer it when those two are the other way round.

Walked back a bit sorry for myself, annoyed not to be running the rest as the forest was in great condition for racing, and pretty concerned about La Santa prospects (hubris/nemesis perhaps, I am sure my friends Miranda and Nicola would say so). Ice and ibuprofen later it seems possible, although not yet probable, that it will be okay on even surfaces at least, fingers crossed it is not too swollen in the morning!

FFS.

Intervals intervals 29:00 [4]
max:162 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

FVO intervals, 6 x 4mins with 1 min recovery.

Wasn't too sure about doing these with the state of my achilles/calves (well in fact physio suggested not doing at all.....). Took the first one steady, and did every second one a bit harder, plus a bonus fast lap at the end of rep three....
1st one (926m) with Abii
2nd one (1070m) with Pete Buchanan from Ochils
3rd one (882m) one lap with Abii, stopped to talk to Dixie about his injury, one lap with Rosco (quite a speedy lap!)
4th one (1130m) between Rosco and Bradc
5th one (881m) with Janine
6th one (1090m) with Pete B and Ron

Running 40:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

Warm up and down plus drills plus comedy sprints although didn't do all of the sprints.

Then off to see Dave C's photos of his epic Greenland expedition, amazing scenery and a pretty full on trip by the looks of it!

Not long until the rather different scenery of Lanzarote now!

Monday Nov 24, 2008 #

Note

Fewer and fewer days remain......less than three days to go....

Pilates 40:00 [3]

FVO Pilates plus circuits warmup/down

Circuits 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Nov 2008

FVO circuits. Took it steady this week and missed out the back curls, tried to stretch out ITB instead. Achilles and calf still troublesome but just about coping with hopping and step-ups etc.

Sunday Nov 23, 2008 #

Road biking 30:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline GTS

Pleasant little jaunt through Cambusbarron etc to retrieve my car from the night before. Remembered that road biking is good fun on the right bike. Discovered that my legs don't seem to be in great shape for cycling up hills, which could be rather unfortunate for the duathlon at La Santa!

(4 more days....)

Saturday Nov 22, 2008 #

Orienteering race 1:05:03 [4] ****
shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

5 days before FVO trip to La Santa, FVO Club Champs on Barr Wood.

Dithered for ages about whether to run the open course or act my age, eventually decided to do the longer course. Started off a bit aggressively and dropped a minute at #2, steady for a while after that although not always taking the best line and was less than 2 mins down half way round (at #8)....

...then made a route error to #9, tried to relocate with 'I've been here lots, if I go over there I will recognise it' (hmmmm) and dropped nearly 5 mins getting to a control which I must have had several times before. Not pushing so hard after that and missed a couple more too, finished 14 mins down which shows how bad the second half was. Congrats to Will who ran the second half better than anyone else and was FVO Champion for the first time!

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]
shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

warm up jog etc, only warm down was some jogging on the spot in the BoA running shop where I bought two new pairs of shoes after the race!

Note

Saturday evening, FVO dinner dance, more training: some high intensity intervals masquerading as ceilidh dancing...

Friday Nov 21, 2008 #

Note

Less than a week to wait!

Went to the physio this morning (forest - no, it doesn't count as training).

Was there a lot longer than anticipated as she identified severe knotting in my left calf in particular (hence achilles issues) and proceeded to inflict severe pain masquerading as treatment. I think it will feel better once it stops feeling worse......

Turbo Trainer 25:00 [3]

Had to do something to loosen off the legs after physio this morning. Did 5 min warm up, 15 mins high cadence, 5 mins warm down. I think they are a bit less sore now...

Thursday Nov 20, 2008 #

Note

7 days to go...

Went to an awards do last night. Copious quantities of food and drink, as a bonus was also presented with a nice trophy by Fred MacAulay. So some of the drink was champagne. Today may well be a rest day.....

Wednesday Nov 19, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

La Santa Sport: 8 days to go...however I thought I had tweaked my dodgy achilles on the final interval last night and it is v sore today, pretty worrying. Am hoping 8 days is long enough for it to recover!

Tuesday Nov 18, 2008 #

Note

La Banta countdown: 9 days to go...

Intervals intervals 27:00 [5]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Tonight was 7 x 3 mins with 60 sec recovery, still far too busy but got there in time for at least a short warm up this week. My calves felt like lead throughout, prob not helped by leaving orthotics in my fell shoes.
847m
840m
833m
830m
812m
813m
837m
Not the best and second lap was weak on reps 5 and 6, on every rep was running the first 200m a bit too quickly (or perhaps the rest a bit too slowly!). However even though it felt rubbish, looking back then distances a little better than the 5x3min set we did a few weeks ago, not all bad.

Running warm up/down 40:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Warm up jog/drills, warm down laps and back to car, then extra warm down lap of the loch with Rosco, helped the legs loosen off a little. Chip shop on way home and then snooze on sofa, both very welcome.

Monday Nov 17, 2008 #

Note

La Banta countdown: 10 days to go.....

Circuits 25:00 [3]

I seem to have several months worth of work to do by the end of this week, not good. Managed to escape in time for circuits (although not pilates beforehand). Did wonder how they would go after giving blood three hours earlier but felt okay doing them.

Got a trifle delayed on the way home when one of the cars ahead seemed to have difficulty with pulling away when the lights turned green...

Circuits warm up/down 10:00 [1]

Running 29:30 [3] 5.5 km (5:22 / km) +100m 4:55 / km
shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

....and finally a run from the car park down Padley Gorge and along the river to cafe in Hathersage, just in time for a late lunch including a very welcome pint of tea!

Running 20:33 [3] 3.1 km (6:38 / km) +140m 5:24 / km
shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

Running tempo 11:57 [4] 2.75 km (4:21 / km) +20m 4:12 / km
shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

Friday Nov 14, 2008 #

Running 38:27 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Long day at work but finally made it out at about 9pm in the wind and rain, headtorch was charged so no excuse for another day off! Didn't feel too sprightly but maybe that was to be expected. Achilles no worse but no better either.

Thursday Nov 13, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

So...just for a change, today it was the first flight to Scotland from London rather than vice versa. Felt pretty wrecked most of the day, stayed late at work, convinced myself a late evening run would be counter-productive. Hmmm.

Instead I picked up a novel (A Fraction of the Whole by Steve Toltz, from 2008 Booker shortlist). First ten words of dustjacket blurb? "Meet Martin Dean: the man his country loves to hate". Not sure whether I want to read any further now......

Wednesday Nov 12, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Early start as off to London for an all day meeting and evening function, no chance to run today.

Meeting attended by 24 people in total, 22 middle-aged white blokes in suits and 2 women. One of the two women was primarily there as organiser of the day's logisitics i.e. tea, coffee, lunch, etc.

Financial services is so very diverse and so far removed from the stereotyped image some people have of it......

Tuesday Nov 11, 2008 #

Running race 11:06 [5] 3.0 km (3:42 / km)
ahr:152 max:160 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Back on the track on FVO Tuesdays so time for the first 3km time trial. Nearly didn't make it at all but got there just in time to find everyone ready to start as one group which scuppered my cunning plan of running with the second wave. Could have run a tempo lap or two to warm up and loosen up, and then started. I didn't....

Could have been worse considering lack of warm up, plus short of sleep this week too. Felt pretty heavy-legged and didn't get pulse up as high or as quickly as I may have otherwise. Had thought I would run under 11 mins (did 10:33 in June) and probably would have done if better prepared. Just leaves lots of room for improvement next time!

And vdot does at least predict that even on this form I could run my New York qualifying time......it is more confident than me!

Running warm up/down 25:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Minimal warm up, could have done more warm down, maybe need to think about doing a longer warm down after Tuesday sessions in future.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Monday Nov 10, 2008 #

Pilates 45:00 [2]

Plus circuits warm up/down

Circuits 25:00 [4]

A little better at the hopping thing this week.....but only a little!

jackb in control of the timing as well as the tunes this week........he seems to be better with the latter than the former.......

Sunday Nov 9, 2008 #

Running 1:17:00 [3] 14.65 km (5:15 / km) +300m 4:46 / km
ahr:145 shoes: new Inov8 Roclite

If you are going to drink the night before a run, make sure you run with the person you drink with.....

A good idea in principle but Martin still seemed to be setting a pretty brisk pace at times, definitely quicker than I would have gone on my own. Enjoyable run though, from Inverdruie round Loch an Eilean and Loch Gamhna to its SE, back via Balvattan. Managed to avoid the worst of the weather whilst running: lots of snow settling as we headed back over Drumochter later, snow plough was in action.

Saturday Nov 8, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Fail to plan.....

By the time I worked out the opportunities for running today, they were all in the past, hmmm.

Instead celebrated Martin Ward's birthday with a five course meal and suitable accompanying drinks...

Friday Nov 7, 2008 #

Running 44:00 [3]
ahr:144 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Lunchtime loop round Polmaise. Usually far too easy on myself on my steady runs so tried to keep the pace up a little more today without pushing too hard. Achilles felt okay but sore to the touch afterwards.

Thursday Nov 6, 2008 #

Note
(rest day)

Sore achilles the last few days so decided i was due a day off.

Went to see Quantum of Solace instead, okay but nothing special, seemed almost more Bourne than Bond in some ways. And definitely not one of the more memorable Bond villains, hope they come up with a better one next time...

Wednesday Nov 5, 2008 #

Running 1:07:00 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Delayed at work so set off to try and find the others, checked out likely fireworks watching spots at top of Minewoods, on golf course, etc.

Never found them but couldn't believe the crowds and traffic jam on the back road at the top of Minewoods, hadn't realised Bridge of Allan fireworks were such a big event!

Headed back down, virtually ran past the others I think, went and watched the rest of the fireworks while jogging along the main road past Meadowpark etc. They were much more notable from nearer to them, impressive echo from the hills above BoA made it very atmospheric!

Tuesday Nov 4, 2008 #

Intervals intervals 23:00 [5]
max:164 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

FVO intervals on uni track. 4 x 5mins with 60s recovery.
1390m (hr 152 max recovered to 137 in the 60s after)
1370m (159=>144)
1350m (162=>145)
1350m (164=>?)
Paced it pretty well after inevitable slightly enthusiastic first lap...

Running warm up/down 35:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

warm up and down and drills and all that, including comedy sprints at the end. 3x10secs of them is a lot harder than 3x6secs was!

Monday Nov 3, 2008 #

Pilates 40:00 [2]

Better than I was but still rubbish at some of them. Was in good company though as Jamie jr looked like he could do with some practice too.....

Circuits 25:00 [4]

Lard has introduced a new hopping exercise and I can't do it at all, might as well be trying to hop up and down on a wobble board!

Sunday Nov 2, 2008 #

Running 47:35 [3]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Up Endcliffe and back in the gloomy drizzle. Only other people out were all the other runners and dog walkers who presumably had all also been putting it off all day hoping weather would improve.
Didn't go very quickly but felt pretty good and bouncy, enjoyed it.

Saturday Nov 1, 2008 #

Orienteering race 17:25 [5] **** 2.5 km (6:58 / km) +20m 6:42 / km
max:161 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Leeds Uni Chasing Sprint round 1, M40+
Actually distance covered 4.0km

Good interesting course, was straight into the first dead end on the way to #1, then straight into the next dead end too!
Lost time trying to run straight across the park to #7 and only spotted the uncrossable fence half way there, had to detour to run round.
Lost time to others on the way to #13 by using the gate marked on the map - the shorter route using the other open gate was mapped as uncrossable......however unlike others I did not lose time at #12 or on the way to the last control, in both places the circle/line obscured the best route, this cost Charlie 50secs at #12 by going all the way round. Failure to cut circles etc was a shame, other than that map and course pretty good, enjoyable and well planned.

Winner was Martin W 16:07, I was 6th place and just behind first lady Sabine Hauswirth.

Orienteering race 17:53 [5] **** 2.7 km (6:37 / km) +55m 6:01 / km
ahr:154 max:160 shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Leeds Uni Chasing Sprint round 2.
Total distance run 3.7km, fewer controls this time and more running needed!
Started with Charlie A and Roger T just ahead and Steve Webb just behind. Caught them plus Steve McL at #1 then picked a poor route to #2 and lost all the ground again plus more.
Good route to #4 almost got me back with the group but not quite, and they slowly ran away.
Couldn't work out how they got away quite so quickly but it turns out a group of them ahead of me all crossed the uncrossable boundary in and out of #6 which must have saved 20secs or thereabouts. Wouldn't have caught them anyway though.
Didn't feel as though I was running so well in this round although it didn't help that I was not catching the group ahead and knew I had a gap behind me. Executed my routes okay but rushed route selection and picked some poor ones, as well as #2 my routes to #7, #8 and #10 all cost time too.

Running warm up/down 30:00 [2]
shoes: Brooks Adrenaline Jan 2008

Jogging plus drills, stretches etc before both races. Foolishly didn't even warm down after the first one....
