For the next couple of weeks it's light enough in the morning to chance a cycle to work - so I dusted off the electric bike and headed off. Chilly, but I was well (over!) dressed. All tickety-boo and a smooth journey, save for having to stop for lots of lollipop ladies in Falkirk (tsk!!),

And the downside of the clock change: it gets dark so EARLY! Glad of my bike lights and head torch on the short route over the hill to Linlithgow, where I caught the train.

SOL7, Dreva and Muckle Muir. Blue - 6.3km +300m.
My back's been bad all week (after last Sunday's O!) but I knew that this area is mostly easy underfoot and I needed to get out, so off I toddled. The forecast was gloomier than reality - it was a bit damp but not really raining at 10:30. I was moving slowly and heavily through the mushy woods, and had no go on the hills; after making two silly mistakes on 8&9, accounting for 3 minutes, Ben H - who'd started 6 minutes behind me - had me in his sights. I got a very small bit of wind in my sails from that, and it took him until 18 to get past. Too many bananas on a simple area, and sloppy mistakes on 8&9, but otherwise this was respectable enough. Better, my back was fine.
It was worth going just for the chance to blast up and down my favourite road, the A701. Oh to still have a fast car...

Quick loop around Braco, Blackford and Sherrifmuir, having finally got the electric bike's creaking cranks and grinding gears sorted. Nice and easy; back still a bit sore after Sunday, although yesterday's numb left foot is now only a little tingly.

Jogged to the start. On road. I will regret this later. TRIMP 24.

Orienteering race 1:26:55 intensity: (36 @1) + (21:48 @2) + (35:26 @3) + (29:05 @4) 8.05 km (10:48 / km) +257m 9:19 / km

SOL6? Fairy Doon Hill or somesuch, Blue, 5.6km / 295m.
Jon summed it up rather neatly when he saw me shortly after I'd hobbled across the line, covered chest to foot in mud and as stiff as an iron rod: Terrain 1, Brad 0. And even that was an own goal. That warm up along the road had me scuppered before I started.
To say that this was challenging would be a polite way to allude to the unremitting grot that this area proved to be. After about 3km I decided to soldier on simply because it simply had to get better. It did. But not by more than a fly's fart. Yeuch. The bits that weren't strewn in fallen trees or roots were deep mud or bog. I found a great example of the latter, near the end, where I disappered up to my mid chest. Lurvely. By that stage my back had gone on strike too, of the 1980s NUM variety, and I was in a sorry state by the time I limped across the finish line. But finish I did. Which is more than Beccy could have hoped for because, with a 2.5km return to the car park to hand over kids responsiblity, then a 2.5km jog for her to the start, she was half an hour after last start. Despite my not even running a long course. The 2hr start block was, frankly, ridiculous. Even if I'd been 1st on the Bluxe, there was no way Beccy would have made it in time. Poor organisation, sorry!

Cycling (Road) 1:51:35 intensity: (6:26 @1) + (35:24 @2) + (55:00 @3) + (14:45 @4) 41.58 km (22.4 kph) +364m

Pleasant cycle clockwise around the island from Shiskine to Lochranza, sadly into the wind, but I just notched down the gears and didn't worry about the pace. It only took 70 mins but, since I was due to meet up with B after her token work trip to the hydro scheme, I carried on out the other side of Lochranza and up the steep hill on the road towards Brodick. It looked wet ahead so I turned around and flew down the hill, topping out at just under 40mph :-). Spun easily around the village again - coming within 4ft of a particularly tame red deer at one point - then headed for the distillery tea shop. Mmm, 10 year old Arran malt is a tasty way to warm up after a cycle!

Wee jaunt out on Bertha after a day at Brodick Castle; possibly the last chance to get out before the predicted deluges of the next two days. A proper late afternoon wish-I'd-remembered-the-lights shower-dodging (not entirely successful at that!) short scoot around a loop from the cottage at Shiskine. Legs a little flat, thankfully the tyres weren't!

Goatfell, Arran. Gorgeous day, sun splitting the skies, but an unfit Beccy curtailed ambitions for the Glen Rosa horseshoe - one of the best hill walks in Scotland. Still, Goatfell is no mean substitute, and a smashing viewpoint on a day like today. Loads of people out; can't remember the last time we saw so many on the hills! A well deserved trip to the castle tea shop afterwards, although the missus denied me a slab of mouth-wateringly tempting chocolate cake. I suppose my waistline will thank me for it.

A truly brutal road cycle from the cottage in Shiskine, after having been out walking with B and the kids. Had great intentions to do a loop around the southern section of the island, heading over the Ross Road and back around the coast, but I rather misjudged the distance and the hilliness of the road; by the time I'd gasped to the summit of the Ross Road, I had to turn around and head for home, or miss out on the roast dinner! Bonked with about 4km to go (really must take food and water with me when I head out for a cycle) and crawled back. But I did make it home before the gravy got cold. :-)

At the hotel gym in Dresden. Not much chance to do any exercise this week apart from lots of walking (about 4 miles per day), with various events going on, but I managed to justify taking my kit by going to the gym at least once. 20 mins cross-trainer and 10 mins cycle (both pretty crap machines), then some time on the multi-gym. SOSOL 2, Calder Wood - Blue (6.3km/2203). Lovely, crisp day to be out O'ing. Started in between Jonny Gallier and his brother, to give them a bit of competition. Saw neither until the nightmare leg 5, direct line 600m, only legal routes 1.5km plus!!! Took the opposite route to JG and actually ran it pretty hard, feeling good today - so took 3 mins out of him on that and saw him coming in whilst I was on the way out. Apart from screwing up the next one due to oxygen debt, I was pretty good by my standards (easy area and running well) and Jonny only caught me up at the last control. Very happy with that, and that I really had no back probs to report. Grand.

Brief gap in between dashing from hospital to airport - 44 mins is better than nothing, and I'll be travelling the next three days.

No time, but 20 mins training is better than none. Diverted home via the gym, but had to dash to pick up the kids. Tried hard for what little time I had!
