Running (Road and trail) 32:31 intensity: (35 @1) + (53 @2) + (17:39 @3) + (13:24 @4) 6.63 km (4:54 / km) +90m 4:36 / km

The nice thing about turning the clocks back is that you can get out for a run after putting the kids to bed. The bad thing is that it takes some thought and planning. Things like not eating too much when you sit down with the kids, and remembering to drink enough and stretch beforehand. Poor planning on all of the above led this evening's escapade to be a twighlit trundle rather than a dusky dash. Still - better out than n'owt.

Running (Trail) 35:25 intensity: (40 @1) + (31 @2) + (11:46 @3) + (22:28 @4) 7.26 km (4:53 / km) +186m 4:20 / km

It was beginning to look like another "all work, no play" day, but I managed to squeeze in a short evening trip to the Gathering Stane before getting the kids to bed. Despite still feeling pretty weak and slow, SportTracks tells me that this is the third fastest of the 14 times I've run this exact route since mid 2009, so I must be gradually getting better. If I hadn't spent 15 seconds calming down a boisterous puppy, I'd have set a PB without really trying.

Lovely evening for it.

Quiet session tonight - just two more weeks to go, peeps, let's keep at it!
7 PM

Strength training (Circuits) 25:00 [3]
shoes: VIbram 5-Finger Speed

A light session - 30/5 and 20/5. Not too sweaty.

shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 12

In Telford, having stopped overnight at my folks, lack of sleep catching up with me; felt very ropey but glad I pushed myself out for a trudge along the roads to Lilleshall Monument. Chanced upon the Lilleshall 10km road race, which was (briefly) inspiring, as I coincided with the leaders for about 200 yards before I peeled off. Not a 10km for anyone wanting a PB - the course was pretty hilly! Looked fun though. Must get fitter.

Last run in Devon - had to be an early one, before packing up. Didn't feel too frisky. but enjoyed it nonetheless. Stile/gate count: 18. That's one every 340m.

Another glorious morning for a run. Set off with Beccy, our first run together since I don't know when. After 25 minutes at a very easy pace we split, I picked up the pace a bit and headed off for another loop and back across the fields. Very pleasant.

A day on the estate today - so I was able to find time for a wee run. Similiar to Monday, but with a wee bit more exploring. Lots of stiles and gates to clamber over, but at least I knew where I was going this time.
Another glorious day! Sun splitting the skies. Fabby.

Note
(rest day)

It's a long way to Truro... from anywhere. Visiting friends. Far too sunny a day to be cooped up in a car.

ahr:138 max:159 shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 12

Family day yesterday, but managed to get out for a short jaunt today before heading off to the swimming pool. Made a short loop on the public paths surrounding Casa Osborn. "Right of way" paths here are crazy, hopping from stile to stile, vague arrows pointing across random fields, pot luck if they point in the direction of the next stile. None of that actual "path" stuff. At least I didn't find any that went straight through a huge herd of bullocks or across a field of barley.
Another day of legs-on-backwards-ness. Or maybe they're the right way round and its the rest of me that's backwards. That would explain a lot.

Note - given the distance of my run, I should have tried harder to make my route follow the shape of the M25, as per Messrs Gaiman & Pratchett...

Well done Team FVO at the Alloa Half. Inspiring stuff!

ahr:140 max:158 shoes: Asics Gel Cumulus 12

Woke up to glorious sunshine in Telford, but we weren't staying there long enough to allow me to slope off for a run. Thankfully the sun was still shining when we arrived in Devon, so I went out for a little pootle to un-seize. I stayed mostly on road, exploring the 'local' village, Blackawton. Really hilly roads around here! Felt incredibly un-runner like, but the warm sunshine was nice.

ahr:148 max:160 shoes: Newton Gravitas 2010

Heading off on holiday today - back sore, so stopped work a little early to squeeze in a short, easy trot around the streets of Dunblane before cramming the family into a car and heading off down the M6. Legs on backwards, very stiff through my lower back too; crip.

Running (Hilly run) 1:32:24 intensity: (1:05 @1) + (18:15 @2) + (30:07 @3) + (42:53 @4) + (4 @5) 15.42 km (6:00 / km) +410m 5:17 / km
ahr:148 max:167 shoes: Walsh Spirit Peak

LSD. The sun began to peek through the mists just in time for a lunchtime run.

I need to start getting some base back, so the fine weather was a cue for a long(ish) slow terrain run from Dunblane to Dumyat and back. Headed out via Cocksburn reservoir - v boggy - to Lossburn track, then up the shoulder; hit snow near the top and had great views of the Ochils through swirling mists. Came back down the main track - very, very, sloppy and slippery, so very slow! - then headed off across the fields north of Pendreich reservoir to try to pick up the bridge on old Glen road. Went slightly awry in the shifting visibility but found it reasonably quickly, then back up the road to home.

Very slow but satisfying. My bad R ankle was quite sore afterwards, but it'll pass...

Strength training (Pilates) 30:00 [2]

FVO session - just missed the first couple of minutes. My lower back was in bad shape all day; inevitable after all that bouncing around in the snow over the weekend. Not sure I should have been doing all the exercises... oh well!
7 PM

Strength training (Circuits) 25:00 [3]

Two sets of the new "bouncy" circuits again, but this time actually with shoes on (!) so I could give it some gusto, and a more respectable 40/5 on the first set (20/5 on the second). Tried quite hard... was almost as noisy as Roger. :)

Stretching 5:00 [1]

Orienteering (Training) 1:05:00 [3] 9.0 km (7:13 / km) +150m 6:40 / km
shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

Woke to find 6 inches of snow in the car park, wahoo! The day's activities were rapidly replanned to use Moor of Alvie for some exercises instead of heading off to Strathmashie. Didn't manage to get out with the pack, as it was Beccy's turn, but that meant that I could go and collect in all of the controls afterwards instead. This was probably more of a challenge that following the courses, as of course taking the optimum collection route meant that I wasn't following elephant tracks.

Felt pretty strong and orienteered quite solidly until I bumped into Marcus and James on their way back from their nice run to the Monument, and after seeing them off on their direct route back to the accom I failed to reconnect my O brain in order to collect the final group of controls (in the most difficult part of the area, too) and was all over the shop. Good resistance training, though, and an enjoyable end to the weekend.

Orienteering (Training) 15:00 [3] 1.75 km (8:34 / km) +30m 7:54 / km
shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

FVO training weekend in Kincraig, in rapidly deepening snow as the weekend progressed!

Exercise 1: Compass, on Avielochan. Ran pretty hard but still managed to not be very accurate.

Orienteering (Training) 22:00 [2] 2.0 km (11:00 / km)
shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

Line course at Avielochan. Total and utter p*sh. I cannot read a map. No, really. I think that, fundamentally, that is the problem with my orienteering. Bit of a sticking point, isn't it?

Orienteering (Training) 15:30 [3] 2.0 km (7:45 / km) +30m 7:13 / km
shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

Prologue course. Took out a 1:7500 and took an age to get into it; was OK from about #4 onwards.

Didn't manage to run the Chase - walked slowly around the southern area to collect in the mini-kites, trying not to disturb the distressed cattle and annoy the justifiably cheesed-off farmer any more. So much for Glenmore Lodge arranging us to have access! Not good.

Orienteering (Training) 50:00 [3] 5.0 km (10:00 / km) +80m 9:16 / km
shoes: Inov8 O-Roc 350

Very enjoyable Fox and Hounds session with Gary, Jess and Jana on Dunachton in the deep and deepening snow. Running into the teeth of a blizzard on the moorland was challenging. Soldiered along pretty well in the deep stuff, feeling quite strong. Comedy river crossings, much laughter and jolliment! Great stuff on a pretty wild day.

ahr:150 max:160 shoes: Adidas Swoop 2

Easy jaunt around the Stane loop, to remind my legs that I occasionally want them to do a bit of running. After this week, they might have begin to forget...

Slippery, slushy slop and snow. About 2 inches of the latter. Much fun, nice views.

Lunchtime run from the Alba with Ross, lovely sunny day; felt like spring had sprung. Not much spring in my step, though, as I laboured along trying to keep up - but then, that's why running with other people is good for you! Still managed to hold up a decent natter without keeling over due to oxygen starvation. Ross was just breezing along, of course.

No HR data. Despite this feeling like a 4 all the way I am splitting it 3-4 because I know Ross is just going to put it in as a 2 :-).
6 PM

Strength training (Pilates) 35:00 [2]

20 adults tonight, top stuff. Duff back and R ankle sore but still reasonably flexible; how does that compute?
7 PM

Strength training (Circuits) 20:00 [3]

Error. Left shoes at work. So - circuits in my socks! Not ideal, and some bouncy exercises had to be a no-can-do, so never really got a good burn/sweat going. Also, 20 people plus kids does not divide into 15 stations, with new exercises to confuse things to boot (and reduced times of 30/5 and 20/5), so not too intense a workout tonight. I had no problem with that!

SOL1 Dalrulzion. M40 7.6km +290m. This was never going to be my day, as it's far too rough an area for me and my dodgy back, but I threw it all away anyway. Blew 2 mins at #2 by being careless, then had a complete brain failure at #8 and trashed 8 minutes by running an embarrassing 900m more than I needed to. Pretty much just pootled home dispiritedly after that. Got completely caught in windblow en route to #17.
New shoes fab though.

Running warm up/down (Warm up/down) 15:00 [2] 1.5 km (10:00 / km) +20m 9:22 / km

ahr:155 max:168 23c shoes: Inov-8 F-Lite 230

Scottish Sprints cse 2, 2.6km. Very early start. No control #3. Confidence blown, along with over a minute. Took a while to get going again properly after that. Then thrown in the school when I saw everyone around me punching numbers 7 and 10 through the fence, lost ca 90s, momentum and concentration by getting annoyed at the poor planning/controlling about that. Never really threw my heart into it thereafter.

So, a very poor show, and to add insult to injury, he organisers decided that not enough people had been affected by #3 being missing before they'd replaced it to bother voiding the legs before and after. Unchuffed.

Lunchtime run in Livingston. Felt pretty good - the back stretching and massage over the last few days have done the job. Nice, steady pace.
Forgot HRM strap so no HR data.

Late afternoon jaunt under a blossoming red and pink sky, too beautiful to resist. Leg & back not up to a run, so I dug out Bertha II for her first outing of 2011. She may not be rusty, but I most certainly am. Ground my way torturously slowly to Braco, then decided to spurn the full route out to Blackford due to the late hour (and tired legs) and headed to Greenloaning, where I crossed the A9 and hiked up onto Sherrifmuir. Lovely views up top and a whizzo descent. Grand to be out.
