Family walk up Fraoch Bheinn, at the head of Glendessary. Many Corbett choices up here, but we opted for the easiest, given both the heat and the little legs. Glad we did; it was hot, the horse flies were horrific, and Eilidh moaned the entire way up. Fantastic viewpoint, though

Back down. Much faster progress and waaaaay less moany.

I'd considered splitting off halfway down to jog up Sgurr na Murlaghain, but we were pretty late and my heels were blistering, so, not today. Bumped into Ange, Adam and Charlotte M in the car park and went for a jolly paddle in Loch Arkaig with them.

Ooof, scorchio. Too hot for much other than some running through the woods with the (much depleted) school athletics club. Jogged out to the woods at the back of Menteith View for a tempo lap of the trails, then on up to the woods by the Ryland Burn for a fun hill rep relay session. Very sweaty! Jog back.

Car on fire in Ochiltree, billowing huge clouds of toxic black smoke; hope folks hadn't left their house windows open... :-(

Jog around the Yellow course at Doune Ponds with Eilidh
What a cracking evening! Last WEE of the series at Doune Ponds - Beccy went out first and I got to go around the Yellow with Eilidh. If she put half as much effort into running as she does into talking...! Still, she has got the hang of orientating her map, at last, and was even remembering the control descriptions. Getting there.

Orienteering 35:59 intensity: (20 @0) + (2:19 @1) + (3:36 @2) + (11:17 @3) + (13:53 @4) + (4:34 @5) *** 5.67 km (6:21 / km) +49m 6:05 / km
ahr:148 max:171 shoes: Salomon Speedtrak 2017

Jase had planned a cracking end to the WEE series for us. The first half of the 4.5 green course was Norwegian map memory, whilst for the second half we had the opportunity to use an experimentally coloured map as part of a PhD study.

It has been 20 years since I ran Norwegian map memory - and it was great fun! I have to say that it helped a lot that I knew the area very well, but it did make me think hard about what information I had to take in and remember when planning my route from one control to the next. I was a bit hesitant on a couple and meandered around in the circle, but didn't lose too much time. For the second part, I got a map where the open was white and the open forest was green; paths were grey rather than black. I found it very hard to see the wee grey paths in the light green runnable wood but, other than that, it was easy enough.

Had had a really enjoyable run and was thundering along to the finish when I ran past a woman with her kids and her small dog, not on a lead. It went for me. She tried to get it. It went for me again, I shouted at it and ran past. She couldn't grab it and it went for me again as I was running away, and got caught under my foot as I was bringing it through, and it took a right bash in the head. I stumbled, swore, ran on to the finish and came back, to find the lady rushing up to me cradling her moppet, claiming that I'd kicked it deliberately. It's not often that I lose the plot, but I yelled at the woman - in retrospect, I regret that, at least - told her that her dog attacked me, I had just been running, and I had never kicked a dog in anger in my life. Then I stomped off, still fuming. Unbelievable. How to ruin a very enjoyable run. Dogs that cannot be controlled should be kept on a lead at all times. What if it had been Esme Finch running past the dog, and it had gone for her? Still cross about it now, two hours later. TRIMP 77.8.

Morning Dunblane-Livingston ride
Lovely morning, so I cycled to work. Sadly, despite the weather, it was a pretty sh*tty cycle. The traffic through Larbert, Camelon & Falkirk is always pretty bad, but it was particularly rubbish today. The road surface was also cr*p in lots of places and I had to get through 8 - 8! - roadwork temporary lights. By contrast, Avon Gorge was almost pleasant and not its usual, terrifying, self.

Set a very easy pace and span up the hills, so, legs were fine, although my back was protesting by the end.
TRIMP 140.6

Note: rather glad I cycled because just after I had enjoyed my lunch, Matthew turned up with a huge chocolate birthday cake that he'd made for Andrew's birthday! Calorie deficit duly wiped out.

Post-lunch belly banger ride back from Doune.
Well, *I* had a nice salmon/prawn on toast lunch, Jamie had a huge burger and was struggling! Top marks for the Buttercup cafe, again. Bumped into Ross's sister, Daria, who arrived there ahead of her parents and Ross & Fi, for a family lunch. Lucky we left them some. TRIMP 18.

(rest day)

Took Jamie to his FVL meet at Grangemouth stadium in the morning, where he ran a 100m and 800m PB. Came back, made lunch, then spent the rest of the afternoon in the garage fettling poor, neglected, old Bertha. Quite chuffed to manage to change the cassette, rear mech, chainset and shift cable all by myself. Even tightened the cones and lubed the BB. Just need the new chain to arrive and then I can phone Gary to plead with him to show me how to set up the gears (I just can't get my head around those).

WEE at Colzium, Green course.
Nothing doing in the legs at all this evening - a pretty painful and slow experience! Made a couple of donkey mistakes, too, one faff in the circle and one big banana when I failed to see the bridge 3m to my right, and took a huge detour to my left. Very slow through the thick stuff, but nailed the controls. Foam roller torture tonight! TRIMP 81.5.

Everyone else is doing tons of prep for the World Masters Sprint races, whilst I'm sitting on my fat a**e with a sh!te knee. Token effort required. Warmed up with an easy 3km, then tried these Moneghetti rep things that seem popular. Or, in my case, 'Mon, Ya Yeti. Pitiful effort. Livingston cul-de-sac dead-ending in new running clogs - the same as my first running shoes, just 35 revisions later! Quite the slippers. If I were a heel-toe runner I think that I would have been in seventh heaven; as it was, I maybe scraped into the fourth celestial plane.
My vague plan was to find Will's direct route to Dechmont Law, but, of course, I went awry all too soon and spent several frustrating minutes spinning around in endless bird-related cul-de-sacs before finally regaining the correct path.
Even Livingston looks nice from the top of Dechmont Law on a sunny day :-). TRIMP 104.9.

Cheesed off after a long day, I needed some scenery and some hills. Inspired by Sarah - Sauchie it was. Pattered out along the crag tops; path rooty, overgrown, and occasionally covered in felled logs. Perfect. Was hungry by the top so didn't extend the route round the reservoir, but came back by the outward route until I could descend down to the river. Just what I needed. TRIMP 98.6.

Knackered after a late night, but I dragged out Bertha for a lunchtime tootle with him up the road. The plan had been to head to Braco then come back over the Muir, but my gear selector cable snapped just before we reached Braco: getting up the hill when stuck in top at the back just wasn't going to happen, so, time to turn tail and struggle back in top. Worried that the chain would snap (and maybe my knee, too!) but we crawled back OK. It really IS time I got the bike in the shop, now! TRIMP 85.7.

LAMM D course, day 2, part 1.
I really hadn't expected to be able to get moving today but had slept well and felt reasonably recovered, so, when the word came that the C and D courses were actually going to have a two-part race today, with a bus along the road, I was confident that we'd make it after all. And, as it turned out, we were actually moving alright. We had a couple of misses in the early clag, dropping maybe 10 minutes in total, which was disconcerting as D4 were starting only 5 minutes after us, but in the end we never saw them and indeed ran away from them, it seems.
The legs were tiring a little before we got to the buses, so we dropped down to the road for the last km, and made the most of the opportunity to rest and dunk in the river before getting on the bus. TRIMP 251.4.

Running hills 1:17:22 intensity: (3:28 @0) + (30:28 @1) + (40:22 @2) + (3:04 @3) 6.3 km (12:17 / km) +359m 9:33 / km
ahr:127 max:147 shoes: Salomon Speedtrak 2017

LAMM D course day 2, part 2. Bus drop off to the finish. The breather was great, but did mean that we'd stiffened up a little, and we were both toiling on the last climb up and over the hill, but we were then pretty strong to the finish. Maintained our 3rd place and 1st vets, although the vets prize went to the second placed vets as we couldn't win both that and 3rd overall. Decent run today, only 10 mins down on the fastest, which was gratifying, particuarly given how beaten I felt last night. Jase was a rock all event. TRIMP 96.5.
A brilliant event, and a fitting one for the LAMM to bow out on; we felt privileged to be a part of it. Very sociable afterwards :-).

LAMM on Harris. D course, day1: 20km and 1000m, but we nailed the nav and ran 6km and 400m climb more than advertised, on a hot day! The first two controls were straight up hill, and I was struggling with unexpected lack of energy and the weight of the pack from the off. The next leg was long, and hot, and we had to have a brief stop to try to address a burgeoning blister on my heel; again, unexpected, as this shoe/sock combo normally works perfectly.

Unfortunately I didn't get my fuelling/hydration right, and tailed off massively after the 18km mark, but Jase helped me crawl to the finish, where we found the most amazing mid camp ever. We were surprised to find ourselves in 3rd place and 1st vets, having been going backwards for the last hour and a half. I was definitely the weakest link today - absolutely b*ggered, and drained to a husk - at the finish. It took a lot of tea and food to feel vaguely human again. Bonus muscle-cooling walk into the sea. TRIMP 443.3.
