Dunblane-Livingston express. Lovely morning for it. Would have been under 1h35 (always the target) despite an occasional headwind had it not been for a slight brain fade and tool up a one-way street in Stirling. HR data garbage; too cool to get a good connection for the first half hour! TRIMP 150

My grand plan to return the route after work was scuppered by forgetting the key to remove the battery from my bike. So much for carrying 3kg of charger. Oh well, I probably needed to run the battery flat anyhoo. Back over the hill to L'gow, only using the electrical helping hand up the hills. The bike goes very well on the flat but there's no disguising 28kg of bike and battery when the gradient starts increasing. TRIMP 50.

Having parcelled B and the kids off to Devon and Dorset for the week - I have some exercise freedom! And a long list of jobs to do, of course. However, I got out for a wee scoot around the short Sherrifmuir circuit on the GO before hitting the garden and transmogrifing into a house-tidying whirling dervish. TRIMP 137.5

The grand JOK John Muir Way challenge. My small contribution to the effort was 13km along the very nice cyclepath from Strathblane to Kirkintilloch (and back again afterwards). And what a nice route it was too, through lovely countryside along the foot of the Campsies. Strathblane itself is a lovely spot, I'm glad I had a reason to actually stop there! Easy-oasy on the Elliptigo; legs a bit out of practice after a week of sloth.

Geez, what a week. Too much work = no training :-(. Hope to finish this mega-coding session tomorrow, though - huzzah!

Well, a very mediocre weekend's orienteering, but - apart from sore knees - a positive one physically; no back issues to speak of, despite two days' racing, one of which was largely on tarmac. Just a year ago I'd have been hurting now; two years ago, I'd have been crippled, probably by the Sunday morning. There's a long way to go and I'll probably not get there before I start to break down, but, hey, I'd have been over the moon two years ago to be where I am today.

SOL4, Lossie. Blue/M40S - 6.9km +125m.
Well, no beating around the bush, I was dreadful today. I need to be on my A game for Lossie, and today I wasn't even in the reserves. Focus totally lacking after a very poor night in the tent with one very obnoxious tantrum child from hell; even my GPS watch decided to commit hari-kiri on the start line. I simply was unable to apply any technique to temper my many navigational deficiencies in the technical stuff - missing #2 by miles, going to #4 before #3, and running from #6 to #15, blowing #11 and #16. Had hoped for more success in the flat forest thereafter, but fell over en route #17 and completely lost my bearings - a quite incredible 6-7 minutes dropped. Got #17 at the same time as Donald P and Jenny Ricketts, then bashed off to #18, arriving just after JR, who'd taken a very different route. I then found myself chasing after Jenny, who was very impressive - smooth and confident through the terrain, and moving very well. I took slightly different lines but freely admit that I wouldn't have been running as hard as I did had she not been there to up my game. There's a lass who'll go places.

SOUL at Dufftown, MM day 1; old man's course (2) - 5km.
Had been feeling rubbish in the morning again, having had a headcold / sore throat relapse Thurs/Fri, but I don't think that this actually affected my race too much when I got going. Nice area, good mix of urban and woodland.
I was mediocre; blew #5 (first in the woodland), missed a path and got disorientated, and was rubbish on the last two, when I'd put my head down to try to gap Al D (whom I'd caught 4 mins in the second woodland) and got myself into a right tizzy, dropping 30+s. Just being generally hesitant and moving too slowly. As Graeme nicely put it in the campsite afterwards - "yes, I saw you out there, and you looked heavy". Indeed, that is how I feel when I run these days. But at least he tempered it with "and I thought 'Brad hadn't used to run like that'". No, I certainly didn't - all my bounce has turned into plod! But there's hope yet. TRIMP 112.1

Beecraigs East WEE: Green, 5.4km. Hackfest. Not feeling well to start - stomach pain - didn't get any better. Lost the will to compete in the nettles at #3. Lost the will to run when not being able to work out what I was looking for at nos. 6 and 7. Lost interest altogether hacking up the non-existent trail through the grot to #11. Not fun.

Lunchtime Dumyat from the top car park. Up the tourist path, back down the ridge/sward, loop of Cocksburn reservoir to finish. Lovely and hot day, very sweaty! Steady as she goes... the march of mediocrity continues. If I want to improve any I'm going to have to break things down and start throwing some speed & interval work into the mix... but I'm not sure if the old vertebrae will take it :-/. Last time I tried it, I broke. Hmm. TRIMP 100.8.

Evening dash out on the ElliptiGO after kids' bath and before B had to go out - not quite enough time to do the full Braco return. Still full of dinner so a bit of a struggle! TRIMP 88.7.

Still ill, but I needed to get out after an awful lot of time stuck in front of a computer recently - so I went for a gentle pootle out to Ashfield, coming back via the Laighhills and over Holme hill. Muggy and humid, sweat wasn't going anywhere so I was dripping by the end, despite the relatively steady pace; HR probably a bit high thx to the cold. TRIMP 80

Gentle evening spin after a long day in the office and before some more work. Also after a large dinner - and with a sore throat/cold - so not exactly at 100% effort. More like 10%. Back to a large lemsip and some more keyboard grind. TRIMP 65.8.

WEE at Braco - new area, new map with a bit of everything in it. Fun in the lumps and bumps of the Roman fort, a wee bit of urban, wee bit of wood, and then a looooong bit of dirt track. Still feeling very slow and less than great so it was a bit of a trundle all the way tonight, but it was grand to be somewhere new. Some fast-running youngsters! TRIMP 103.1.

Elliptigo 32:12 intensity: (35 @0) + (12 @1) + (2:56 @2) + (8:05 @3) + (19:28 @4) + (56 @5) 12.28 km (22.9 kph) +100m
ahr:152 max:167 shoes: Elliptigo

Steady (5 mins slower) pootle back on the GO with Fraser, who wanted a gentle spin back to Dunblane before heading off up the Muir to get home - but I suspect that he had an even easier jaunt than expect, and never got out of second gear! Whereas I definitely had to work harder. Which is why I got the thing :-). TRIMP 76.3.

So much for any training - six hours in the car/truck. 3 of which were just trying to get home from Penicuik when the Edinburgh bypass was covered in a lorry load of paper...

Windy day for a tour of Kinbuck, Doune and Lecropt on the Elliptigo, but the strimmer conveniently ran out of line and so I had to do SOMEthing... :-). Legs not playing ball, but I got round - and arrived home before the rain hit! TRIMP 120.6

It's always more interesting to run with a map, so, I took advantage of the glorious sunshine to run around parts A and B of SOUL3 (Livingston's) course 2, and saw the nether regions of Livingston in their best light. Jogged there from work - only a mile away - and then went for a steady pootle around the courses. Again, being very careful and measured on tarmac, so, far from race pace, but I'm beginning to think that I might get away with the odd short urban race.
Only one error of note in my navigation, but at that pace I'd have hoped to make no errors at all! Very enjoyable. Tweaked my dodgy groin strain just a couple of minutes from the end of course 2B and had to walk in considerable discomfort for 30s or so. I REALLY must get that sorted, it's been weeks and weeks now. TRIMP 101.3.

Up the hill from the house, after another long day at the computer. Bit of a struggle today; back below the fitness threshhold again and feeling like a sluggish punter. Mix of trail and terrain, slow going. TRIMP 82.1.

Early morning Braco return. Legs on backwards. Forgot to drink anything beforehand, too! Eejit. It wasn't raining but it was still very wet on the roads; warm, though, cooked in my jacket, despite the leisurely pace. Finally felt good after I'd had a shower and breakfast :-). TRIMP 97.9.
