Inspired by Janine's effort from Denny through Carron Valley earlier, and with a 2hr window of opportunity in a weekend of back-to-back kids' parties, I jumped on the bike and pedalled furiously off to Torrie. Made decent progress to there; then started the climb just behind a proper cyclist on a posh bike, and gutted myself trying to keep up. Still felt fine through Thornhill and along to Gargunnock (average 28.75kph for the first hour is OK on a sit-up-and-beg), but then the wheels came off heading back into Stirling, into a bit of an easterly, and I was crawling before I got to Kings' Knot. Energy reserves on zero, legs shot - perhaps I should have eaten more than a few left over cheese quarter sandwiches. Or maybe taken some food with me? Hmmm..

Coasted to Bridge of A but completely ground to a halt crossing the Allanwater and had to swallow my pride and call B for uplift (can't walk very far in SPDs). A few lessons learnt today. TRIMP 175.4.

Wee run up around the Gathering Stane. Easy pace. Very easy. Positively wanton, in fact. TRIMP 89.9

Braco - Choire Odhair circuit. Experiment to see if I could get a decent slab more range from the bike battery by only using the power to flatten hills. Quite successful - 20km, or about 50% extra, for the first 'bar', but I then the wind picked up shortly before I turned into what became the teeth of a gale, which made for much harder progress. Still - about 30-40% extra range, for only a modest reduction in average speed; reckon I could get 100-110km from a full charge. Not that my back would make it that far; it was sore before the hour. Nice to do some exercise again... 30 mins on X-T, X-C programme, very poor performance, but it's a start (again). +4. TRIMP 86.5.

Stretching 10:00 [1]

Reasonably limber. Minor back niggling.

(injured) (sick)

Day 2 of post-circuits LBP and sciatica - that'll larn me. At least the pills are helping with my third cold in three weeks, which arrived yesterday... a**e.

Guest appearance by yours truly. Lowered the tone within seconds of my arrival :-)

Strength training (Circuits) 25:00 [3]

2 sets - 25 and 30? Tried quite hard, and even risked the bouncy exercises. Note to self - don't expect circuits to be easy after sitting on your fat s**e for several slovenly months. I suspect that some much underused muscles will be screaming tomorrow.

Running hills 58:41 intensity: (25 @1) + (14:22 @2) + (15:30 @3) + (28:09 @4) + (15 @5) 7.89 km (7:26 / km) +421m 5:52 / km

C57: Meall na Leitreach. Sent out to the hills for the day to get my irregular grumpiness-resetting hill fix, I didn't have an early start planned, so heading for any of my few remaining Munros wasn't on. There are plenty of Corbetts around, however, and two short hills was probably a prudent move, given my lack of fitness and fickle vertebrae.
MnL is the hill south of the Sow of Atholl, at Drumochter. Very unassuming in itself, but with nice views up the pass, and very easy underfoot conditions, it was an ideal start. I "ran" (ok, wheezily jogged) it, which was a joy to still be able to do; can't remember the last time I achieved my traditional target of being back at the car in 75% of the time the SMC guide posted just to get to the top. TRIMP 124.6.

Hill walking 1:40:11 intensity: (17:08 @1) + (46:54 @2) + (32:28 @3) + (3:41 @4) 6.23 km (16:05 / km) +571m 11:02 / km
ahr:129 max:157 slept:7.0 shoes: Inov-8 RocLite 319

C58: Beinn a' Chuallaich, second of the day, after lunch. Rougher underfoot, a good excuse to walk rather than jog. The hill is just on the N side of Loch Rannoch, facing Schiehallion, and an excellent viewpoint, with a clear line of sight along Loch Rannoch to Glencoe, Glen Etive and the Mamores. Lovely.
TRIMP 119.9.

Short run out to Ashfield on the way to picking up the kids. Steady pace. Cough seems ok. Back still niggly.
Might be time to rethink my runs. If I'm always going to be severely restricted in duration, and number of times I can run in one week, perhaps I should make most of them intervals or rep sessions. If my back can put up with it. I shall start experimenting. TRIMP 74.2

Try again. After a second week of grotty cold - last weekend's orienteering let it really set in - I actually felt well enough to get out again today. Still, took it steadily on the bike. Lovely warm sunny day, but quite a breeze! TRIMP 117.2
