Note
(rest day)

A "Work at home" day should be a "nice long lunchtime run" day, but not at the moment - too much to do. R knee a bit tweaky anyway, so maybe a wee rest was required. I did at least walk to and from the nursery in the morning and the evening - and even tried a bit of barefoot running in my Five Fingers shoes (or, as Jamie calls them, my "Monkey Feet"). Hmm, a rather odd sensation, but they're amazingly comfortable to walk around in, so I guess that I just need to try a bit further each time.

Running (Trail) 43:12 intensity: (40 @1) + (9:05 @2) + (33:27 @3) 9.01 km (4:48 / km) +30m 4:43 / km
ahr:140 max:150 shoes: Newton Gravitas 2010

Lunchtime recovery run from the Alba Centre, to help keep things mobile after yesterday's exertions. Legs a bit tired but surprisingly ache-free; happy about that! My back appreciated the break from the desk too, I think that all of the recent extra hours being hunched in front of a computer have been the main cause of the lower lumbar pain. We're not designed to sit down for 10 hours a day, day after day... we should be out running!

Orienteering race 2:39:37 intensity: (45 @1) + (15:15 @2) + (1:28:02 @3) + (55:35 @4) ** 18.82 km (8:29 / km) +931m 6:48 / km

TAY Ochils Long-O, long course: 15km +890m. Same old, same old - set off thinking about running and not orientering, promptly had a rubbish #1, dropping 5+ mins to HelenB. Once I got up high I couldn't work out what was going on and wallied around for a fair bit. Dur! Feeling relatively fresh, though, so was OK pace-wise through 2-4 (although too high at 3, another minute or so carelessly discarded). Then a rubbish route choice on the tough leg to #5, opting to "run" down the burn rather than nip over the top then down a nice long path. Reckon that cost about 5 minutes, but then HelenB took the same route and whopped me by 5 mins anyway! Poor. Legs tiring slightly but executed the longish leg to 6 well, picking out a good route through the many ups and downs; slow on 7, chewing a bar, then didn't think 8 through and ended up changing my mind, costing another 90s or so. Legs certainly starting to tire by now, too, so getting to 9 was slow, 10 was very slow (and off), finish was virtually a walk!
So, I'd expected to be a good 30 minutes down, 12 on nav and 20 on running pace; surprised to actually be 40 mins down. Disappointed over the nav but the pace is all down to lack of training, no excuses there.

Really sore lower back today, it's all locked up, ow.

Running (Road) 38:56 [3] 8.73 km (4:28 / km) +70m 4:17 / km
shoes: Newton Gravitas 2010

Lunchtime run out from the Alba Centre, more to clear my head than anything. Legs stiff to start but loosened off, as did my brain - one of those inspirational runs where you think through lots of things and achieve the sort of clarity that seems so elusive when you're stuck behind a desk! I was thinking so hard that I hardly noticed my feet were happily bounding along in the Newtons, which are well on their way to becoming my favourite pair of running shoes ever.

Running (Trail) 51:39 intensity: (37 @1) + (6:21 @2) + (31:31 @3) + (13:10 @4) 10.28 km (5:01 / km) +175m 4:38 / km
ahr:145 max:162 slept:5.0 shoes: Newton Gravitas 2010

Much cooler today - thankfully! Headed out after work to collect Jamie from nursery "the long way" - via Darn Path, the pipe bridge, "over the hill", Hillside of Keir and Laighills. Running out of time, I skipped out the bit near the High School but still had to actually start running (rather than pottering) in order to get to Ramoyle before 6!
Really loving my Newton shoes, comfortable and fast.

ahr:151 max:165 slept:6.0 shoes: Inov8 RocLite 305

Short run - pressed for time, as always, oh, for a life beyond work. Still phenomenally warm (24C) at 6pm. Churned around Dykedale wood and arond the Stane loop.

Day off today, gentle stroll to Balamory lighthouse. What a beautiful country we live in.

Hill walking (Surveying) 9:30:00 [1] 11.0 km (51:49 / km) +550m 41:27 / km

Another hard day at the office - Beccy's office, that is. Finished off the first survey, then managed to survey the entire second proposed scheme, much faster than expected. Eee, hard work! And I don't even get paid... Although I do get a nice evening meal after a grand day out in a gorgeous part of the world, so I cannae complain.

Hill walking 3:05:00 [1] 10.0 km (18:30 / km) +970m 12:27 / km
shoes: Inov8 RocLite 305

Morning walk up Ben More on Mull at a nice easy pace with Beccy. Gloriously sunny but windy, until we reached the top when the wind died down and we were able to sit Down and soak in the views and the sunshine. Fab.
2 PM

Hill walking (Surveying) 4:00:00 [1] 6.0 km (40:00 / km) +200m 34:17 / km

Working as Beccy's unpaid assistant, surveying for otter at a potential hydro site on Mull. Walking/scrambling up a burn, wellies on, trying not to fall down waterfalls... What a strange job my wife has.

ahr:154 max:165 slept:7.0 shoes: Inov8 RocLite 305

Short run, hasty rebooking of ferry to Mull (cancellation of Oban service, have to drive to Lochaline!) meant an earlier departure and less time to run beforehand. Pushed along pretty hard as a result. Chuffing hot day to be grinding uphill on the Sherrifmuir road.

Ran home after dropping off the hire car at 8:30 in Stirling. More notably, ran home before breakfast and without hydrating properly. Felt bl**dy awful! I really should know better. Oh well! It would have been a lovely morning for a run if I'd been able to put my suffering out of my mind and look around me...
HR fantastically high for what was, in reality, a geriatric jog.
5 PM

Orienteering 30:00 intensity: (17 @1) + (36 @2) + (8:24 @3) + (20:12 @4) + (31 @5) *** 5.6 km (5:21 / km) +91m 4:57 / km
ahr:154 max:169 slept:8.0 shoes: Inov-8 F-Lite 230

WEE Laighills - 4.8km stated, nice wee course planned by Gary. I somehow managed to stop my watch rather than hit the lap button, again, so a bit of a guess at the actual distance.

Started off pretty hard and was consequently pretty rubbish - then soon realised just how dead my legs were and struggled to keep the pace up! The new lightweight urban trail shoes felt good - no cushioning, but I didn't really miss it. Nice. VERY humid and sweaty. Yum BBQ after - thx Louise/Beccy!

Oldham and back in a day. 9 hours of driving, several hours of meeting, breakfast and dinner at Tebay. Thank goodness I don't have to do this very often.

Running hills 51:29 intensity: (22 @1) + (4:14 @2) + (16:13 @3) + (27:22 @4) + (3:18 @5) 9.07 km (5:41 / km) +431m 4:35 / km

Dumyat from the uni - a bit of exercise before donating some of my (apparently) very rare and very useful blood. I'm sure that's what they tell everyone. Anyway... a lovely afternoon for a steady grind up the hill, 27min from the back of the sports centre so a bit over 26min from the race start - happy enough, I wasn't racing! No mission to break records (or ankles) on the descent, so when I hit the wood I took the slow but delightful little path along the top of the wood, then after crossing the stream climbed back up the road and ran along the tops of Hermitage Wood. Lovely lovely.

Strength training 20:00 [2]

Time to start doing some work on the upper body again, before it has totally wasted away! Ah, those heady days of youth, when I had "guns", not pea-shooters...

ahr:128 max:156 slept:7.0

Nice day for a cycle - bit breezy though. Headed out on the Doune/Thornhill circuit via Old Glen Road and Carse of Lecropt, then anti-clockwise; a nice figure-of-8! Into the wind on the way out but a useful following breeze all the way home. Sore back, really must follow the expert advice and shorten my stem (or whatever!).

Finally managed to drag my lardy ass out for some exercise after a slothful / stressful several days. Wibbly-wobbled my way up the Sherrifmuir road to the Inn, then doubled back to the G Stane and weaved back along the forest tracks to the house.
The Newtons are still feeling good, but their first major flaw is revealed... they aren't much cop on stony stuff (too unstable at the front due to the very 'proud' forefoot sole), and totally useless on mud (no grip!). No surprise in either regard, though, they're an out-and-out road shoe.

Head cold, feeling a bit grotty, so a second day off. Also, lots of left-over cakes to eat up.

Note
(rest day)

No hangover (was I being sensible yesterday? No - just talking too much to overindulge!) but today was a nice relaxing family day. Apart from the carpet cleaning :-/. Pleasant morning stroll over some boggy piece of nondescript moor near Comrie with Beccy, counting birds. Twitch twitch.

A gorgeous morning for the Tour de Katrine XL (that's roman for 40, not my shirt size). Set out from Aberfoyle with a select group of good chums to help celebrate my senior-citizen status, bouncing our way along the scenic but appallingly surfaced road to Stronachlachair. Once we peeled off the public road and hit the private one, the surface improved markedly - nice job, Stirling Council. Much pleasant tooling along the side of Loch Katrine, pleasant banter alternating with some challenging lumpy bits, then a pleasingly masochistic grind up Duke's Pass, finished off most pleasurably with a fabby fast descent back to Aberfoyle. King of the Mountains trophy to JT (although he gallantly let Fraser keep his shirt), but top marks to MTB boys Ross and Fraser and most especially Gary, whose day out with Bertha was positively heroic.
Much fun. Afternoon celebrations/indulgences duly earned.
Note amateur effort with the watch stop-starts. Corrected headline stats courtesy of JonX's log.

OK so I'm old but I can still run to the top of Dumyat from my house... just. By 'eck it were 'ot. Totally stunned to find Waltersmuir reservoir, which is normally a git to bypass, is almost completely empty - making for a very easy traverse (how often do you get to run across a reservoir?) but somewhat worrying at the start of summer!
Had a nice wee rest at the top of Dumyat and toasted the world before heading back the way I came; contemplated a more circuitous route but glad I opted for the direct one, I was wilting in the heat. Along the ridge, Lossburn track and and over the hill (yes, I know that's what I am) to Kippenrait and Dykedale Wood. All that and only about 6-800m of road. My kinda run.

WEE at Dumyat, courtesy of Roger. I made the mistake of just enjoying the running and not bothering to orienteer, and (of course) threw away about 5 minutes in really silly errors, which was a shame because it was a nice course and should have been ideal for a hill runner! Well - I DID enjoy my running, which is great, and it was a grand night to be on the hills.

Another squeezed-in run... just time for a wee jaunt up to the Gathering Stane.
Legs felt pretty good, back/knee/heel all sore... but suddenly I found myself floating along, feeling bouncy, agile, strong - that feeling of capability that makes all the plodding sessions worthwhile. It didn't last long, and I know that I'll be back to plodding again tomorrow, but maybe I'm starting to get fitter and that feeling will come back sooner rather than later. That's why we keep at it.
