Road Running 30:10 [3]
shoes: Addidas adiStar Ride

Just your standard 30 min jog after work. Still tired from the sprints so it was a pretty relaxed pace, but the route I took had a couple of decent hills that got my heart rate up.

QOC Sprint Qualifier at Lake Fairfax - QOC put on a fun sprint event for its annual winter meeting that consisted of a sprint qualifier race and then one of three subsequent finals - A,B, or C. The qualifier was fairly straight forward and I found every control without any difficulty so there's not much to say about it other than I felt pretty winded after just the qualifier! There was a fair bit more climb than I was expecting as well which added to my overall exhaustion and even forced me to walk a bit. I finished a little farther back that I would have liked which makes admiting that I've taken a little too much time off from training unavoidable, but I have been training more than my log indicates - I've taken to laziness and have only been posting orienteering races since most of my running has been 30-40min jogs to get myself back into training mode with nothing much to say about them (here's you answer Wyatt if you happen to read this.)

QOC Sprint Final at Lake Fairfax - so my qualifying race landed me in the C final, which is actually the longest/most difficult (would be like A final in WOC/JWOC terms) and it was a killer of a race. The final was a chase with slowest qualifying times going first (all 3 finals started at the same time) so that theoretically everyone would finish at pretty much the same time! Exciting! This sprint was a killer for me. First, it was really more of a middle distance race at 4.6k and with 450m climb I was dying trying to keep up a sprint pace (obviously I didn't the whole time), but it was a lot of fun because everyone really did catch up to each other eventually. At #12 there were literally 10 people swarmed around the control just waiting to punch! This race was not quite so clean for me despite the large mass of people running through the woods. A number of us were too far left of our #9 and then I managed to get sucked down into a reentrant too early on my way to #13. Leaving #12 I wanted to get ahead of that large mass of people waiting to punch so I quick checked my compas and then took off, but didn't check my compass again till I had gotten too far down the reentrant - I had a group behind me, but when I stopped and realized my mistake so did they and they more easily corrected themselves since I had to run back uphill and through some nasty brambles. By the time I made it to the control the group had come and gone. From then on I really started to lose steam and without the pack to keep me moving I think I slowed down quite a lot. It was a humbling race though because I definetly was much father down on the results for the final than I was for the qualifier. Good motivation to really get my butt in gear!
